We are Brian & Jessica, a married couple who started on a life-changing whole food, plant-based journey back in June 2018. In June 2022, our lives were flipped upside-down when Jessica was diagnosed with stage 3 ovarian cancer at age 36. Since then we welcomed our very first child via gestational carrier and bought a new house! In May 2024, our lives took another major turn when Brian was diagnosed with renal cell carcinoma at age 41.

You speak to the point of nostalgic foods and trying to recreate them as vegan is normal for many of us. I'm more than 5 years without meat or dairy and there are still times I miss the foods that celebrate life - hot dogs on the 4th of July are real. I’m 73. Been through a lot of diet and lifestyle hits and misses in my day. Started following you guys before the cancer hit Jessica. I saw a short video the other day where one of these fitness guru drs said that a 7/10 sustainable diet path is better than a 10/10 unsustainable path, meaning that 70 percent of the time you can tow the mark but don’t give up if you deviate momentarily. Perfect is nice and some people can follow a plan perfectly. I can’t, so, 7/10 makes sense to me. I definitely lean towards the WFPB being a very healthy way to go. I am definitely going to continue to follow you two to see how it goes!

I was that close to perfect wfpe-sofas free person for the first 2+ years eating this way, then colon issues became such an issue that I chose to go down the path of eating more fast food(taco bell) and it's been a genuine struggle to get back to no oil, salt, and sugar. I've gained 35-40 lbs of the 100 I lost in the process. I need real people like you to talk about your health and the struggles you've gone through to see that I'm normal.

What I love about you two is that you are great examples of being human which gives everyone else the feeling that we all can just do the best we can do with where we are. I think that is really important. I'm an Ayurvedic Practitioner which works from an elemental perspective like Chinese Medicine ~ from this perspective you are both "kapha" (earth & water). These types often will have more struggles with keep weight down. It's more than possible, but there is a whole thing going on here. I commend your commitment and honesty.

Hey you guys. I am recommitting here with you. I turn fifty in a couple of weeks, and I cant think of a better time to do make permanent changes for myself. WFPB for the win. One thing I have done lately is to get very plain and basic with my meals. I might spice the heck out of them, but beans with a little rice, some steamed chopped kale or spinach, and a yellow vegetable on the side is just about as good as it gets.

I was on a raw food diet (wasn’t a diet but way of life) for many years until an accident crushed all my teeth and broke my jaw in multiple places which wasn’t realigned prior to jaw being wired shut for over 2 months. They can’t make functioning dentures for me due to my crooked jaw-I’ve had many sets made. What I’d give to be able to bite into raw radishes, celery, apples etc

I've been vegan for 13 years and even though I ate pretty healthy, I always ate more food than necessary. A habit I developed very young and couldn't break. About a year ago I hired a coach and started keeping track of the calories I consumed using an app. That's all it took for me. I still keep track of what I consume for calories because I don't have to worry about my weight for the first time in my life. I've never been happier. I'm not saying keeping track of what you eat is for everyone, but it has given me a way to turn the eating off. The bottom line is, even if a person eats only healthy vegan food, but more calories than that person burns on average, it will cause excess weight.

Also, I was also wondering if you've ever had any concerns about nutrition with your way of eating? I'd love to learn more about how plant-based eating can meet our bodies' needs. Right now, hubby and I are VERY low carb because we both have diabetes and are trying to keep our sugars down as much as possible through what we eat. Do you think plant based would possibly give us too many carbs? I know they're good carbs, but we're SO limited that even good carbs can spike our sugar. I appreciate you guys and your honesty. I have found it challenging to be 100 percent because of family members & friends or the going out to eat. We don't live in an area where there are many Good options to eat healthy plant based going out. I did plant base only for years & over the past years have transitioned to Mediterranean. I admire you both in trying to be a good role model for Elsie. Hopefully No one has gotten too nasty with you in their comments. I found the best diet for me is the Mediterranean diet . I've tried carnivore, keto vore, keto ect I had issues with gag reflex from the meat and fat. Everyone is different and they have to find the best fit for their lives.

Here is something I learned early on in my transition to Whole Foods, vegan, low low fat ( especially oils and salt )....greens, particularly celery juice, spinach, spirulina etc have mineral salts which cut cravings. Your body has to build these special salts. Lemon n lime water are helpful. Took me 1.5 years min to convert without going back. I enjoy the food

Rather than having focus on weight loss, it is best to focus on health, as your why. You just havent found what works for you. What foods, lifestyle that you can be consistent with. Furthermore, health is not just about food, think of sunshine, sleep, hydration etc. 😊 I hope you find what you need and works for you. I have lived with systemic lupus for over 40 years now, along with RA. 8 of those years I took medications. Then I began developing allergies to not just the SLE meds, but to most of them. My allergy list begins with Benadryl now, and covers two pages. Nothing with even tylenol or motrin, most antibiotics (I've never had a Zpack), most antihistamines, etc. I've been told not to get a tetanus booster without a crash team handy. So. My diet. It absolutely is whole foods, but it is not plant based. I supplement minerals and some vitamins by topical application since my gut (like most auto-immune disease sufferers) just destroys anything taken orally. I cook from scratch, bake bread/make pasta using Einkorn flour that I pay a small fortune for. I can and dehydrate produce from our garden and a few things from local farms and orchards. I use lard for cooking ~ sometimes what I render myself, sometimes purchased from grass fed farms locally. I use raw honey. I may go through 10 pounds of raw cane sugar over a two year period (for the household, not just myself) even with canning and baking. And yes, I eat meat, dairy, eggs, etc. Some we raise and process ourselves. Some is purchased from local farms. I make NO apologies ~ and I have been deeply involved with the entire AR/AW debate for decades. My diet is local with the exception of coffee, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla beans. I even grow my own Spanish and Hungarian peppers for paprika (and yes, I do outsource seeds although not so much now since I also save seed each year). The bottom line is that I've lived with and managed a lethal disease with diet, a 'clean' house (no upholstery, no carpets, natural cleaning products and toiletries), very little plastic (I use glass for food storage as much as possible), water filtration (including fluoride), etc. Each of us has to choose how we live, so I don't judge others ... and I've gotten quite adept at countering any who judge me; including doctors. Believe me when I say I have VERY little use or respect for our medical business that left me stuck with turning into a miserable sod from a sinus headache/seasonal allergies with their overuse of drugs. I ditched them after my 9th anaphylaxis round that was followed by their adamant suggestion of chemo to 'try and keep me out of a wheelchair for another year'. I'm not in a wheelchair 32 years after that prognosis. I do have days where I am in enough pain to not 'want' to walk, but I can. I have rarely been sick since I stopped taking antibiotics ~ I can count the number of times on one hand. And, I'll tell anyone the same thing I tell the grim reaper that has been perched on my shoulder and snarking at me for 42 years ~ not ONE second before the good Lord calls me home. Live your lives people. Be happy while you live because anything less is a waste of the life you've been given. Remember that not a single one of us is getting out of this alive, and wasting time on being angry, fighting with others, etc. is time you will never ever get back.

Maybe this time you won't restrict that much caloriewise? If you eat legumes, potatoes an veggies up to satiety, this should automatically make weightloss easier? I don't live WFPB, just, because I like a small amount of fat with my veggies for the taste and I eat some dairy from time to time. Meat has become so unimportant, that I probably could call myself a vegetarian. But all these "labels" are no longer important to me. Being kind to myself, no longer blaming myself for not eating "perfect", no longer being ashamed for anything, no longer overthinking. Instead: enjoying wholesome food. Being kind to myself. Allowing me to eat until I'm satiated. Eating slowly, eating as often and as much as my body needs it. Caring for my emotional needs, so that I don't need food for that anymore. All this has finally brought me to the best journey or adventure of my life, after so many years of dieting and restricting. There are many possibilities to come to a peaceful way of eating. My doctor explained there are many types of obesity - one size does not fit all! She told me for some it is behavioral and others it is mostly biological. She has prescribed Ozempic (which is less expensive if you buy from a Canadian pharmacy btw). Still are cognizant of what I am eating, but thankfully I have no "food noise." now. Just normal hunger and enjoying whole foods plant based eating. No shame, No blame

I love how open (not that way 😉😅) you two are! Sadly as you know you will get all kinds of comments when you put yourself out there. I think some people weren't taught that if you don't have something nice to say, then don't say anything at all. Also sometimes we just read things with a certain tone in our head. I know I also deal with a lot of negative self talk and have a tendency to take things too personally. it's good to get varying points of view. That way we can reflect and honestly look at ourselves. In the end no one is perfect and we all have a bit of a hypocrite in us at times. I am not vegan but I have been on a journey over the last few years to incorporate more vegan/vegetarian/WFPB meals into my repertoire. They have become a normal part of my meal repertoire. I’m here for the recipes. Because they are great! Using real food! That’s tasty! Yes I eat some meat fish eggs dairy … but not a lot, because you don’t need much of anything. WHy not just for Mediterranean diet that allows a little bit of satisfying meat? One of the biggest problems with diets is that people don't sustain them. There is great evidence that a whole foods based Mediterranean diet is great for health. It can allow you a small amount of satisfying animal products, but still keep you both healthy. Just an idea. It allows a small amount of meat. not a lot. its a small change. Doing a mediterranean all time is better thant being a whole food plant based "all time" that always cheats and never eats we..

We absolutely encourage people to do Mediterranean. WFPB is kind of just a more extreme version of Mediterranean. 😆

@@KrocksInTheKitchen I have no strong opinion about what path you all choose, i just want to see you find success and consistency, for your collective well-being/happiness. If you feel like you are failing, it is easy to lose motivation. Best to find a good way that is sustainable - whatever that is for you. I love 5:2, personally, with Mediterranean. I find doing the 600 calories harder than just fasting for the whole 24 hours. There's no right way, just what is right for you two. Good luck!

NO ONE is perfect!😄. Check out Lean with Plants with Chelsea. She is all about habits.... and flexibility. She is not perfect in her diet but has reached her plant based goarls.

If you don't want to be vegan, that's okay.But it's more real if you say at times you eat vegan and time to eat meat, or yet you eat meat and once waker saw you eat plant based.

Why would you not eat one of the healthiest foods on the planet??? Grass fed ruminant red meat/organs gives you extreme nutrients, all the aminos acids that are a complete protein(unlike plant food) being vegan/vegetarian kills more animals than being a meat eater as well. It's just super hard to get all the aminos/nutrients your body needs to be super healthy from plants alone. Plants are full of anti-nutrients as well that your body has to deal with. Most people aren't healthy enough to convert the essential fat soluble vitamins etc. from plants so their body can use them ..........with animal proteins no need for the body to convert these valuable vitamins etc. they are readily available to the body with no conversion needed...........It's just so much harder to be healthy not eating animal based foods so why the hell would you do that to your body?

I grew up in a House, where we just ate a balanced Diet. I thank God for that. I can not understand why People make such a big fuss about Food. Just eat a little bit of everything, and put your Energy into going outdoors. And also, do never eat processed Food, lots of Fruits, vegetables, Meat, I have my own Chickens and Eggs are Sooo healthy! I only buy organic Olive Oil from California. In General, we buy organic whenever possible. And we avoid Canola Oil, it’s simply not healthy. But I agree with you a 100 Percent, on what you say about avoiding Meat not being a good Choice.
