0:30. "Nothing you can do?” I have square bars. Wrapped with a thin cord in spiral. Not hearing any noise from roof rack now. I think this breaks up the vortexes into smaller ones, that cancel out.
@ZEROmg133 ай бұрын
same principle as communication towers mounted vertical , which also have these spiral ridges. that's exactly what they do, break up the air flow around the tube.

I agree: very useful advice! @Camperghini: Such a shame. Swop it out for a "Ludicrous Rack": no noise when driving my Tesla, even upto 240Mph, except for something that sounds like police sirens behind me. Sounds familiar?😂

Thank you for this! I just purchased a pre-owned vehicle, and it's making a lot of wind noise. At 2:27, I paused the video and went to check. Sure enough, the previous owners installed the roof rack bars backwards.

Try some surfboard pads, especially on rectangular profile bars. These can reduce wind noise, and fix harmonics as well.

Very informative video! I'm wondering if you have any empirical findings using a varied diameter paracord with the wrapping method? I'm currently using 1/8", which has helped, but I'm considering increasing it to 1/4"... Will this further reduce noise? Thank you!

I bought a pair of aero bars...5g3 funny thing is that doing highway speeds the noise us minimum... But around town they howl a bit...strange no!?
@ready4sea301 Жыл бұрын
I used to have a Ford Aerostar with factory aerobars, with a slit on the top without a cover. The howling it made was really annoying, and it took me a while to figure out what the heck was causing it. It didn't occur to me that the aerobars might be missing a cover over the slit. The solution that was a very easy fix, once I thought of it, was to put a piece of rope in the entire length of the slit in each cross member. This disturbed the airflow enough to where the howling (whistle) never happened again, and the rope simply sat in there without moving for the rest of the life of the car.

Thanks for the video. I have a new VW electric SUV and the dealer installed roof cross bars on the factory installed roof rails. Wind is setting up a sympathetic vibration between 30 and 40 mph that makes passengers think they are inside a bass fiddle with someone playing long, low notes. It's way beyond what anyone would call a hum or a whistle. I'll try the solutions you suggest. Anyone else have this problem and found a solution?

Also have an Id4, however i just got the new yakima sightline fx aero bar and running into issues as well. As for your stock one a wind deflector will work, or running a rope around the bar as others in the forums have done. Hope this helps!

Great video thanks. I have the Thule Edge black WingBars package - 7204, 7213B, 7212B - and use this with the Porsche performance roof box. I get loud whistling noise at 655-60 mph. Is this an issue with the installation or the combination of the Thule bars and Porsche roof box - Porsche have advised I use their roof bars as they are taller and this could be the reason but I can't believe Thule would have designed theirs to not be performant. Any advice you can offer? thanks

Put a twist in them. If they are flat, they will vibrate, but a twist removes this.

These are roof rails, not a roof rack
@s-c..2 жыл бұрын
Generally roof rails are considered to be the ones that go along the length of the car, as in the bars along the sides fitted from factory, and can be used to mount roof racks, which go across the car.
@snowmanO072 жыл бұрын
Rails are parallel with the car, rack generally refers to perpendicular bars aka crossbars, and roof basket is the actual basket often mounted on crossbars.
