County Sheriff's departments and the state police in Michigan require police academy training for paid officers (this is not necessarily true of Sheriff's posses), the state has its own program and counties require that recruits attend either Grand Valley State University's or West Shore Community College's police academy program. The largest city in the state, Grand Rapids and second largest city Detroit operate their own police academy for city police, some departments require university police academy attendance and many small towns don't require any training at all.

Because its legal. Notice how none of these officials said straight up "this is illegal". Abuse of power? I guess, but he's not making a legal claim. @ryanwallace21562 жыл бұрын
@@htomerif Excuse me!?, a loophole allowing the employment of reserve officers/militia from across the country is an abuse of power.. No wonder the "chief" resigned.. expecting a response by state and/or federal oversight! If an official investigation happens.. @htomerif2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanwallace2156 Look, no offense but you do understand the difference between "abuse of power" a lay term and "abuse of power" as a term of art, right? There's no doubt that in lay terms this is an abuse of power. I don't think its a legal abuse of power though. You're right as far as case law goes but I'd really be surprised if there's no case law already established. I know Alaska has a huge reserve officer force for the same reason as that town: a lot of the towns in Alaska can't afford to pay a full time certified cop. I'd say that AK would be a good place to look for case law regarding who can appoint police, volunteer, etc. I'm guessing you just copy-pasted your rant at the end since it wasn't relevant to what happened here. These people were paying to be "police officers". I don't see any immediate violation of the law, but I'm guessing if there was an investigation you would see all kinds of charges pop up like bribery, fraud and embezzlement. That's probably the reason multiple people resigned. It would be great if an investigation could get off the ground, but the FBI still needs RAS to even start an investigation and PC for warrants. To be honest, the best way to get the ball rolling on this would be for an organization like the SPLC to file lawsuits against individuals involved for whatever, then to turn over what was found in discovery to the FBI or NM DA's office. That would give them PC to do a real investigation, but it costs money to get to that point and I don't think you're going to find anyone willing to bankroll that lawsuit or a nonprofit with enough money and manpower to divert to something as (relatively) inconsequential as people paying to be cops.
@rangerbill95362 жыл бұрын
@@htomerif htomerif, I lived Alaska fot 13yrs. You are partially right about the reserve officers. These officers DO NOT carry a gun. Secondly those reserves have VERY LITTLE POWER!!! They MUST call for a Alaska State Trooper to do virtually everything. They really don't arrest for most crimes. It MUST be turned over to State police. They really don't NEED to put so called prisoners in a jail, way too cold to run. St. Popo comes in by airplane for serious crimes. The PEACE OFFICER can only report!! Htomerif, you are close too being right, but the fat lady didn't sing. Nice try tho.

@@rangerbill9536 No, not a "nice try". I knew all of that. Whether or not they carry a gun or a trained hamster or have to ride around in a clown car is irrelevant. I would tell you that these fake NM police have to to basically everything that the AK reserves do and don't have any more power than they do *legally*, but that's not the point of my post. Also: you don't understand what a "peace officer" is. I like how the state police chief says a lot of people want to be police officers but can't. These days, a lot of people can be police officers but don't want to. It's just a hassle of a job and there are so many better employment options for good and honest people. A law enforcement career is left to be populated by the lower end of the educational curve and those who have fewer options. Honestly, becoming a police officer is not difficult. A lot of agencies are so desperate for people that they are accepting misdemeanor crimes. When I went through a police academy many years ago, I was shocked by the number of people with prior dui, theft, and assault convictions. Makes a person wonder which side is for the Crooks and which for the cops? Think about it the next time a cop pulls you over. Everyone should record every interaction with police regardless of the perceived professionalism of the officer. Don't trust the police simply because they wear a uniform and badge.

I’m sure they didn’t think these guys would do anything dangerous… until they did. Sounds to me like the town was relatively safe and that the reserve program worked for the most part- except the lack of background checks, qualifications, and required passing of police academy. They let these guys come be cops in town for the funzies, for as long as they needed to, so they could keep the badge year round, and they laid $400 each for it. I’d be happier if the mayor had put the money into infrastructure rather than his and the “police chief”’s pockets. are you sure the mayor didn't know about the scheme earlier going on for 13 years?it's only a town of 430 people

Every one of these people in or out of state should be charged and put in jail. Every single one of them no exceptions.

How many other little towns are doing the same thing.

Why didn’t the city just acquire off duty protection from surrounding law enforcement agencies. I’m sure there’s cops that wouldn’t mind looking in on the little town.

22 weeks total in training. Yet a Barber takes 104 weeks to be licensed. I see a huge problem.

“Many people just want to be police officers and just can’t “ you’re saying that about tier 1 operators and top of their game athletes. I’d say that inference about these people is wrong…entirely. If only that quality of person was a police officer.

So what was the problem, other than lack of "Training" ? Did they do something illegal in the town? Seems like there would be more to the story than a town with too much police. How did this change the crime rate?

they can also look at records systems so they could be uber stalkers if they didn't like someone or overly liked a woman.

22 weeks to become a NM State Trooper, but almost twice as long (40 weeks, or 1600 hours) to become a NM state-licensed cosmetologist...

The ONLY thing that surprises me about this story is that Steven Seagal and Sean Penn are NOT on this list. *Marcus Luttrell should know better and he IS a Navy Seal.

Should ex. Seals not be allowed to carry fire arms, I think that’s why most sign up so they can carry inter state
@blackbird56342 жыл бұрын
@@DashDriver-z1r I think anyone with an honorable discharge should be allowed to carry if they pass the background check.(no felonies etc.) But becoming a fake cop? I was NOT surprised Dan Bilzerian got caught out in this scam. But Mr. Luttrell is a war hero of the highest order and his sacrifices and those of his team are valued across our nation. It remains a mystery to me why he would need more ''validation'' or one more badge of honor in this lifetime. He remains high in my esteem and this slip up does not negate his standing, not too much anyway. -this is not sarcasm.
