Quick and dirty history of Oda Nobunaga is he almost unified Japan just before the 1600s until one of his generals turned on him. He paved the way for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who almost got the job done but didn't live very long after to enjoy it. And most people heard of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who's family ran Japan for the next 265 yrs. Nice review as always. I wish Hanwei would sort out their handles, lol!

That's not a flintlock, it's a matchlock. Nobunaga was the first daimyo to use firearms in battle.

the menuki are the oda clan symbol, the gun on the fuchi is representative of the fact that nobunaga was the first daimyo to find a good use for firearms in war.

Great review, as always! I also hate that style of handle - really doesn't match the sword, here, which is why I didn't pick one up. Brief history: Oda Nobunaga's victories in the Sengoku are commonly attributed to his enthusiastic adoption of the arquebus. In popular culture, especially the Oda/Takeda victory at Nagashino is attributed to the arquebus, and there are surviving texts in which Nobunaga insisted that all his troops - especially samurai - should use the tanegashima whenever available. The kabuto (helmet) on the kashira looks like his distinctive one, as well. :) So... history checks out and is consistent with his life.

I really like the fuchi and kashirea on this Hanwei. Besides the the typical Hanwei tsuka all in all it's a decent katana.

Nice video. Decent piece....what is proper amount of tension of Habaki when drawing sword from scabbard? My examples fall out if turned upside down. Looking for a new sword where this won’t happen.... also.... Have watched many of your videos. What were/are your favorite top 3 you have or have had in your collection and why? Might make a cool video! Keep up the good work! 🙏🏼

Nice. Very good review.... Of all the hanwei katana I own, that one is by far my favorite. Love the balance, geometry, fittings, and sharpness level. She's not without her faults (cheap sageo, saya rattle, typical hanwei tsuka, and crappy samegawa panel), but all in all, I like her quite a bit.... From what I've read, Oda Nobunaga was very quick to adopt firearms...

I think yours has a keener edge. How do you think the grip feels in comparison to other swords? Anything in the review you would disagree with? Would also be interesting to see dynamics on yours to see how much they differ. In one of your videos, I think you noted the weight at around 2lb 6 something ounces, this one is a a bit lighter.

@@Matthew_Jensen compared to other manufacturers katana, tsuka has the usuall hanwei issues. However, she is a a slight bit shapelier that the raptor or practical I own. Can't say that I disagree with anything in your review. It does seem that their QC has slipped a bit in recent years. Ours share some common problems but also have some differences, the biggest being the sharpness discrepancy. Was actually pleasantly surprised the first time I took her to a noodle. Give me a few days and I'll try and get the dynamics for you (i struggle with that pendulum test, lol) I think those will help to point out some things. She is kind of an odd duck. Very different blade shape than the others in my collection. Well balanced though. Down the road, I'm gonna have my guy shape the tsuka a bit and rewrap her. Once that's done, I think she will really be among my favorites...

All I know about Nobunaga is that he was a HIGHLY ambitious man whose ends always justified his means (look up some of the more extreme things that he did in order to cement his position of power, and unify Japan, and then take the aforementioned comment however you like). He also seemed to favour a particular African slave that he met via a European Jesuit priest. Nobunaga was so fascinated with this man and his appearance, that he named him Yasuke, and made him a samurai. As far as I know, Yasuke was the only known African samurai in recorded history, and Yasuke grew quite close to Nobunaga and his son during his short tenure in Nobunaga's service. Unfortunately for Yasuke, he was forced to go back to the Jesuits after he failed to save Nobunaga from a traitor.

Nobunaga was a very brutal warlord almost similar to Adolf Hitler, in fact he did lot of heinous things including murdering innocents including children. Historically also he committed seppoku aka suicide and mitsuhide just took the credit despite he was not the one to end nobunaga.

Lord Oda Nobunaga is known to be first of the three great unifier of Japan. He was Born into the sengoku jidai-Period.This was a time of great war’s between the many warlords of japan. The Menuki on the Ito shows the crest of the Oda-Clan.Nubunaga has a personal preference for firearms->The fuchi shows a muskete and a bag of gunpowder.Oda was known for his political skill and tolerance towards the european and the Christian faith. For example Oda allowed the european to build churches.Oda Nobumaga was also known for a clever trade politic whit them.He was feared by his enemies for his strategic genius but also for his ruthlessness. After he defeated the sōhei (Battle-Monks) and caused a massacre in the mount hihei, some gave him the nickname „Nobunaga the fool“because of his ruthlessness and brutality towards the inhabitants of the mountain; some said that he had taken a curse on himself for this bloody act.Not long after he conquered and controlling large parts of Japan, Oda Nobunaga was betrayed by his general Akechi who organized a rebellion against the regent, in which there was fierce fighting in which Oda was seriously injured and forced to commit suicide in order not to fall alive into the hands of his enemies. Greetings from Germany 🙂

i only have the ppk katana , wakazashi, and tanto. (not much experience) IMO hanwei has been dull on all 3 blades, I couldn't cut printer paper even when i held the paper firmly. it doesn't take much work sharpening to get them to cut paper though. Also i never knew tanto were so thick. i feel like i'm swing around a piece of bar stock, it's fun to cut with and easy to sharpen.

My favorite story about nobunaga is that he was considered a fool by japanese nobility. before his first meeting with his future wife nohime, her father saito dosan gave her a dagger and told her to kill him if he was as foolish as people said. After meeting him once she was so impressed with his resolve and ambition to unify japan, she decided to marry him and stayed loyal to him until their eventual betrayal and death. Also he had a loyal retainer named toyotomi hideyoshi who started out as a common born sandle barer for nobunaga before rising the ranks to samurai and eventually becoming the second of the three great leaders of the sengoku period before political shenanigans happened that led to the third great unifier, tokugawa ieyasu, to take control of japan.

I wish I didn’t like these Japanese swords and Hanwei is my favorite of them all (Bugei is made by Hanwei and yes I love them) I really do like Citidel but they are small swords for a person my height and hands my size, also Skyjiro is good but again small. The quality is there but size is not. Now you don’t like the handle because ? Perhaps you have little baby hands?

Would love to see you review a sword from handmadeswords(dot)com. I got my first sword from them in today and it is shockingly nice. The fittings we're really nice, great quality iron tsuba, expertly wrapped ito and the saya fit like it was made for the specific sword it was paired to. I spent an hour cutting away at all sorts of stuff and it performed great too. Mine was the $130 price point katana and it put my Musha/Musashi stuff to shame.
