theres a really interesting and kind of fucked theory that she does this to reassure herself she is still who she thinks she is. imagine hearing everyones thoughts, all the time, to the point you cannot differentiate between your own thoughts and someone elses. this is her way to combat this, by stating ANYA IS... ANYA WANTS... ANYA- she is making it clear, this is HER thought and not someone elses

@@GreetMyMeat It's not pronounced exactly the same way. There're different inflections and the emphasis is on different parts of the word so each word is pronounced slightly different. It is also hinted that her real name is "Ania" but since she didn't know how to write her name, she learned to write it the way she was taught at the orphanage. That, her skill in "classical language" and the absence of clear records about her identity hint that Anya is not only a laboratory subject, but also an immigrant. Which explains why she usually has pronunciation problems.

@@zoraackerman1684 it's a mix of things. The most obvious being she's 4 but treated by most as a 6 year old so that missing 2 years of brain development is mistaken for her being retarded. One other thing that I find odd about her in the anime's japanese dub is the way she addresses her parents as Chi-chi(father) and Haha(mother). Normally when directly addressing either one the suffix -ue is added to the word(Chichi-ue, Haha-ue). Without the suffix, the word is usually a possesive subject instead (MY father, MY mother). Either she has yet to fully grasp the nuances of japanese grammar or is a sign that she is subconsciously reminding herself and proclaiming that they are HER parents...

In universe, she was also a test subject because of her mind reading abilities. Imagine being a young child with a mysterious ability. The only ones who know you even exist are scientists who test you on your power day in and day out, barely treating you like an actual person. Maybe they didn't care to actually teach you anything because they were more interested in you as a test subject and what your ability was capable of doing. Now, in Anya's case, this ability was telepathy. As far as we are aware, she's been able to do this for as long as she remembers. From a child's perspective, why actually learn anything when you can essentially steal info from the smart adults around you and regurgitate what they want to hear from you. Do you actually learn anything by doing this? Do you mentally develop like a normal child? Probably not... Heck, we see Anya constantly try to cheat by reading minds and her thought process is she doesn't actually have to learn because she can just do what she's always been doing. Now that she's part of a complicated family, she's learning that using her ability for everything isn't the end-all-be-all and she actually has to learn and think for herself from time to time... but old habits die hard it seems.

MANGA SPOILERS (lite): We recently learned that Anya is actually quite talented in ancient languages. My follow-up theory is that her birth parents spoke that ancient language and since babies start learning linguistic patterns even before they are born, Anya was pre coded to speak the ancient language. Also, Anya originally spells her name as 'Ania' which I heard was an older spelling of the name less common in Russia (of course I might have misheard since Ania is the more common spelling in Poland)

Random Japanese here eager to add more info about the language: Warning: I meant for this to be short but I kept writing because I got excited to share. Read if you’re interested in learning Japanese though! In Japanese, it’s extremely easy to express certain things just by picking the right lettering system: English phrase: “My name is….” In Japanese: Normal way of writing: 私の名前は... Uses a mix of kanji and hiragana. As a language that doesn’t use spaces in between words, we usually rely on the combo of kanji and hiragama to see each "chunk" of words. Hiragana is mostly used for conjunction words (“the”, “and”, “is”, etc…). Kanji is also super helpful because Japanese has limited sounds. 46 hiragana, which sounds like a lot but each letter is a syllable and that really limits the range of word-sounds you can make. (Makes it crazy easy to sound out words though. No silent letters or difficult spelling) Now we'll take the same phrase and write it only in one lettering style. Hiragana only: わたしのなまえは... Because hiragana is the first lettering system taught, a hiragana-only sentence often implies that the speaker is young, mentally young, or even mentally impaired. (I read a story where a character was sedated/drugged and the character spoke only in hiragana for a while they were feeling “loopy”. It's really interesting what a writer can convey using these lettering styles) It’s also sometimes used if a character is extremely confused about a specific word. Because we use kanji for most words, to use only the basic lettering can imply that the meaning of the word is not registering to the person (in a bit of a child-like way) Katakana only: ワタシノナマエハ... Katakana is mostly used for foreign words. Japan has a lot of words imported from other countries. Fun fact: It’s a common misconception in Japan that most “foreign words” are English, but historically there are also a lot of Dutch words. With a sprinkling of other countries like Spain, Germany, France, and Russia. A funny thing will happen where Japanese people will go to America trying to say the “English” words and end up confusing everyone involved lol) Examples: リュックサック (ryukkusakku) Meaning: “backpack” from the German word “rucksack” ズボン (zubonn) Meaning: “pants” from French word “jupon” So names of foreigners are also written in katakana like “Jospeh” ジョセフ To write a whole sentence/speak exclusively in katakana implies that the speaker is foreign and speaking with a strong accent. You’ll also see it used for computers and aliens too. To exclusively write in katakana has a strong unnatural feeling, so you’ll rarely see it. It’s also used to emphasis, kinda like italics because it’s the least-used lettering system. (Also why it’s strange to read a paragraph written exclusively in katakana) Phew, sorry for the long post. I hope this was helpful to someone out there. I love sharing this kinda stuff. I find it fascinating. TLDR: Normal writing: kanji and hiragana Little kids: just hiragana Foreign words: katakana

Something that’s really difficult to convey is English is that Anya often uses the wrong word - usually the meaning is technically correct but the context is very wrong. Example: Normal: ただいま (I’m home) Anya: アーニャ帰還した (Anya has returned) The word Anya uses is used when someone returns to their homeland from abroad or when a soldier comes home from war.

Another way of explaining this can be done through the story's lore. All of her Anya's classmates are upper class (societally) so they've all been taught proper diction and grammar and what not by their family, private tutors, and/or advanced schooling. Anya had none of these growing up. She learned how to talk the same way layman kids learned, so she talks like an average toddler instead of an aristocratic scion. (Wait, is 6 toddler age? I figured Anya just never went to school prior to Loid adopting her (partly due to her being adopted and returned so often), so she never properly learned how to talk.

To finish this, hiragana is the first form of writing children learn, because it's simple, while kanji are complex to the point that even a lot of Japanese people have trouble with them sometimes. But once you learn kanji, they can make interpretation easier because Japanese has a lot of words that would be homonyms in hiragana but would be written down totally differently in kanji.

@FreedomIII Damn! Out of curiosity why keep doing the multiple languages thing? Maybe it’s just because I’m American with the benefit of speaking the worlds lingua Franca but surely having Kanji, Katakana etc. is rather inconvenient.

@@thedukeofchutney468 Oh, for that answer, look at Japanese written in only hiragana. Just to give you a sense of what it's like, itsbasicallyliketryingtoreadenglishsansspacesandpunctuationanditsimposdibletotellwhereinthehellsanthingstartsorends. Possibly, yes, but it's much easier to just have important words with in kanji to make it readable at a glance.

@@FreedomIIIinteresting that you wrote english without spaces as the example cause I think in a lot of older videogames that didn't have detailed enough graphics for eligible kanji they'd write without them but use spaces similarly to other languages and that would help make it more readable

There's another reason she always makes mistakes. You have to consider she can read minds, so she's constantly hearing grown up words that she kiiinda understands but. not really, so unlike most kids that are talked to with a more simple vocabulary, she simultaneously hears both a childish and a grown up speech all the time. She tries to speak more adult like but she fails at it since she probably forgets the grown up words or doesn't completely grasp how to use them
