Ostania and Westalis are right next to each other. The croquette lady killed in the bombing said she has Ostanian cousins. They’re pretty comparable to East and West Germany and North and South Korea. I doubt there’s much genetic difference. It does appear a higher proportion of Westalians have light hair. Almost all WISE characters have light hair.

Interesting that this is based off of the east-west German division, which meant the bombings he was surviving was based off the Allied bombings of Germany during ww2. Keep in mind Loid was actively fighting a war, a lot more bodies there. While Yor may be way more trained in the act of death in particular, assassination's are generally not a high quantity of casualties at once, or constant. Yor probably gets more 'quality' (as in either people deemed bad enough to need to be killed now, high profile, or otherwise hard to kill) murders but Loid probably gets quantity.

Base on the world setting and era take place I am going to assume it take place after ww2 I believe. From my best knowledge atleast but I like to believe it so, cause really it make sense of how there are still fwo factions from west and east that yor and loid are part off trying to keep world peace due to the war loid was part of. The only kind of war that will cause two fractions like that are both ww1 and ww2. Along with the fact why they will have both assasins and spy in the outside world. To which I am sure there were plenty of them in the both world war, and of course it also make sense for Anya to be exerpimented on forind reading abilities. I mean would you rather watch a anime about a normal average guy John Smith who lived a normal childhood and upbringing and grew out to be a normal person because of it. I think sad backstories are just fine as long as they actually impact the character and explain to us why they turned out to be the way they did. If the backstory had zero influence on the backstory and wad simply used to draw sympathy and boohoo points from the audiencr, i think thats bad writing.

This type of writing is more focused on giving sympathy rather than being "relateable" and its not a problem, at least for me personally. I think Loid's backstory is quite fair though and it gives reason. Its not a bad writing, just use common storytelling. I guess you can also still make a character without a depressing backstory, but lets be honest, if a character became too bland, or have no problem at all, I think theres a high chance you'll grow bored out of it quickly. Also believe me that its harder to write.
