Turns out you dont even need a heat shield to land on Eve. If your periapsis is about 75 km then you can do it just fine with a fairing. Sadly one of my wheels popped on the way down so it's really hard to drive it but it works pretty well for my first rover. My rover (named Wall-A) has performed the first atmospheric analyses and ground experiments on Eve and earned me over 400 science from transmissions alone.

I have had that wheel problem before, from pressing Control at the same time as "W" and accidentally setting a trim value for positive acceleration. In my case it was not a glitch, obviously I don't know if your issue was the same.
