Matt, your reasoning is sound. It's not "boomer" to see the wisdom in understanding the method that makes the application work. Watch someone who has grown up depending on talking GPS devices telling them "turn right or left" directions and suddenly are faced with reading a paper map. I am a ship's captain and run vessels that are regulated by the U.S. Coast Guard. Theses vessels must pass a safety inspection every year. Although U.S. Coast Guard recognizes electronic navigation devices (GPS chart plotters) as being a bonus tool on board the vessel, the ship will FAIL it's inspection if it does not carry paper charts and the tools necessary to manually plot a course. The U.S.C.G. doesn't care if it's all just gathering dust on the shelf, but it MUST be there and you MUST know how to use it. This is similar to most other sea fairing countries as well, including the U.K. At sea, when generators fail and batteries eventually discharge, if you can't manually plot a course on a paper chart, you, your ship, your crew, passengers and cargo are in serious trouble.

Having automated tools plan maneuvers for you can be a great learning tool. When I first started playing KSP I learned a lot of the orbital mechanics by using MechJeb's maneuver node planner and paying attention to what it did. And sure, the stock tool is really only useful for transfers in specific situations, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are players out there who end up using it to figure out how to do their own transfer maneuvers.

@Matt Lowne - I can relate to your allergic rhinitis, as I also react to essentially every seasonal allergen. You'd likely have a very hard time getting any GP to do it for you, as many don't want to do it for me here in the states, but a large booster of triamcinolone acetonide will make it possible for you to live like you don't have allergies for a whole season. Personally, if I can, I get an intramuscular booster shot of 200mg once a year when symptoms start, then I won't need to take any further allergy medication that year. At 60-80mg (all some doctors would allow me to have), I need to supplement with a double to quadruple dose of OTC allergy medication daily and sometimes need additional shots.
