My first crack at a somewhat realistic artificial gravity. I had to do maths and calculations and everything. I used my calculator at one point. Exciting stuff.

After having played KSP for at least 4 years now, I have finally managed to get two spacecraft to rendezvous in orbit and dock. Of course upon doing so (first time was a kind of Apollo style mun mission) I immediately began building a space station. Thanks to the combined help of yourself and Scott Manley I now have a near completed station and I’m on (I think) the 6th module.

3:16 it's not actually the centripetal force that is creating the artificial gravity. It's the centrifugal force (pushing you towards the outside of the spin)
@wyldcat9396
@wyldcat9396 5 жыл бұрын
Well actually the centrifugal force (the outward force) is just an object inside another object changing direction from centripetal force. For example, when you are inside a car and the car changes direction, the outward force you feel is just your body trying to continue along its straight trajectory but getting blocked by the turning car. I know all of this from a youtube video by Vsauce called 'Laws and Causes' if you are curious

Hey Matt, here's a trick to keep your rings rotating. Add 2x KAL-1000 controllers, name one "Rings start" and one "Rings stop" Rings start controller Set repeat mode to "Loop", leave the length of the sequence at 5 seconds and add the following tracks: - Disengage Servo Locks, add 1 point at time index 0.10 - RPM Limit, a horizontal line with both start and end at your desired RPM (I have mine at 5, I don't know if this method allows you to pick values between multiples of 5, you'll have to test that. Alternatively creating a sine/saw wave-like track that alternates between 5 and 10 might give you an effective 7.5 RPM) - Torque Limit(%), a horizontal line with both start and end at your desired value (100% works fine for my similarly sized orbital tourist hotel) Rings stop controller Set repeat mode to "None-Restart". You can only engage servo locks when the rotors have (almost) fully stopped so you'll have to test how long that takes on your station, and then make your sequence length a comfortable bit longer than that time (on mine it takes 40 seconds for the rings to stop, so I have a 1 minute track with the servo lock at the end). Add the following tracks: - RPM Limit, a horizontal line with both start and end at 0 - Torque Limit(%), a horizontal straight line with both start and end at your desired value (100% again works fine for me) - Engage Servo Locks, add 1 point at a time index near the end of the track, long enough after the start to allow the rings to (almost) fully stop rotating. Now add 2 action groups, one that plays the sequence of your Rings start controller and stops the Rings stop controller, and one that does the opposite. Use these action groups to start your rings for normal operation, and to stop and lock them for doing orbital corrections (if the rings are not locked on my station they tend to get into a frighteningly resonating wobble at even the slightest attempt at attitude control :s ) I've tried using the Brake action on the rotors to make them stop faster but that's confusing because there's no separate action for Brake on and off and it often leads me to end up trying to spin the rings while the Brake is engaged. It's also confusing that the Brake light on the HUD doesn't light up when the brakes are engaged this way. YMMV. If you leave your station while the "Rings start" controller is active, it will still be active next time you visit because of the "Loop" repeat mode. Of course the ring rotation still has that Heisenberg quality of not actually being active when you aren't looking, but at least the rings will start up automatically any time you visit your station. Thanks for all the inspiration and hilarious commentary!

1G is overly luxurious anyway. Real life astronauts have been pulling stays on the space station longer than a year with no gravity at all. Scott Kelly stayed up for a crazy amount of time. Long enough to simulate a mission to Mars and back. Giving them "only" 0.3 g or 0.5 g would still help reduce bone loss, and be easier to accomplish.

@fractalboy8125
@fractalboy8125 5 жыл бұрын
A couple of things that I think are worth pointing out (only because you want to make the connection to realism): Firstly, the quantities you refer to in finding the optimum configuration of the rotating rings are not independent because tangential velocity goes like rotational velocity * radius. Secondly, generating artificial gravity using rotational rings isn't feasible due to Coriolis force (which is proportional to rotational velocity * velocity of an object moving in the ring (such as an astronaut)). This isn't an issue when traversing the the ring in the circular direction, but when moving in a transverse direction it becomes a real issue. For example, for the numbers you provide for your rotating rings, an astronaut moving in the transverse direction at 1m/s (an approximation of walking speed) would experience an upward acceleration of 189m/s^2. In order to reduce this effect to manageable levels requires the radius of the ring to be increased (so that the rotational velocity can be decreased). Playing with ball park figures suggest you would need a radius of around 1Km, but this doesn't take centrifugal force into account either.
@fractalboy8125
@fractalboy8125 5 жыл бұрын
actually, when I say upward acceleration, I mean a radial acceleration. Whether this is an upward or downward force (from the point of view of the astronaut) depends which transverse direction they move in (~left or right). In the calculation I did, I chose the direction which results in an "upward" force

KSP question: If you hace a part with two nodes, and another one with two nodes...can you couple both nodes at the same time? As far as i remember (maybe it's because of an update), ksp only allow you to couple one node, and the other one would be useless. So, for example, can you make a "real" ring? Or it is just a C with a strut?

Oh, I have wondering where the camera tools you used came from. BDArmory, why didn't you say so mate. One thing I have missed is the SSTO videos. I know I haven't build one in weeks which is a very long time for me. I haven't got around to it. Been trying to build massive crafts for Sarnus (Outer planet mod) I think its spelled. 600 part count rockets are a nightmare. Seems the deep space kraken is having issues with it. But I was thinking about one that sort of looks like the VentureStar. In this I would of course have to use procedural wings to try to create that general shape. Really, thinking more about a lifting body more than that shape. A flying wedge really. All engines are aft, somewhat counter sunk in or appears to be. Carrying, I don't know, it really doesn't matter, 20 Kerbals and from the mk3 parts basically six bays (one large/one medium). Maybe fly it from Kerbal to Duna for the mid-range check flight. Jool would be the most likely target in the end. If you want to try that then your free to do so. I don't make KSP videos. Lost interest in all of that years ago.

Video Idea: you should do a dry dock in orbit of Kerbin or Minmus like the one Kerbal Space Command did. You could use it for refilling and (most importantly) it would look awesome. I would love to see your take on this. Please do it :)

Hey Matt, love your videos been watching since i was a little kerbal and I thought it would be cool if you put seats on the inside of the two rings diameters to make kerbals get G's in space like a gravitron.

Could you use F=mv2/r for centripetal force or do you have to use a=v2/r for centripetal acceleration for the magnitude of artificial gravity?

Do you still do the blunderbirds? I got to Duna and I almost didn't have enough fuel to stop ran out of fuel in my interplanetary stage had to flip around and use the Lander stage to stop and get into an orbit after that I realized I'm not going to have enough fuel to get home and complete the mission so I ditched the engine and Let It Go off into solar orbit and landed with the command pod still docked to the Lander so I currently have one Kerbal stranded on the surface the command pod has been undocked from the top of the Lander and flipped off I don't know if this the correct place to ask if you still do it but if you do your help will be greatly appreciated also forgot to add never been to duna before and I used your most recent video on how to get there and back

Zombiekillagaming674 what you could do, is build a lander with a ton of deltaV with 1 kerbal in it, and land it, and bring it back(remember tons of deltaV)

Help - I tried creating a similar counter rotating station but the rings won’t spin until the fairings are jettisoned. It worked fine on the ground during initial testing, but stopped after reaching orbit. The ring jerks a bit and seems to get caught on something until I jettison the motor cover fairings. I turned off all autostruts were off via editor extensions, and I think the only mod parts that I’m using in this station are from KSP interstellar extended.

What would happen if you built a couple open platforms ("science platforms") into the rings to actually simulate the gravity effect during an EVA?

Won't the Coriolis effect cause people to fall over the second they try to stand up with a ring that small? Since their feet have to cover a considerably greater distance than their head as the ring spins?
