Flight manager for reusable stages, FMRS for short. Perfect for things like a falcon9, or air launch systems. Recovering stuff saves a lot of credits in career mode, especially when using very expensive big first stages.

@Ry Guy Extending the physics just prevents the craft from unloading after a few km. FMRS, on the other hand, makes an auto save when you stage, and then lets you switch vessels between the two (or more) parts, so you effectively get to control them all "at the same time".

There is/was mod called Stage Recovery that let you recover dropped stages or carrier aircraft. It worked by creating a time flag at the point where the craft separated. You could then go back and fly the other ship, and when that flight was resovled, it reintegrated the timelines again.

The mod is called FMRS: flight manager for reusable stages. It combines the save where you put your second stage to orbit with the other save where the carrier(or i.e. falcon 9 first stage ) lands. You basically fly twice and lose nothing. And it handles the saving and combining

Stage Recovery is a great mod for realistic recovery. If it is manned or probe controlled, and has sufficient fuel, it will "land" itself back at KSC or perform a powered landing in the case of a rocket.

You can save the lower section as long as the upper section remains above 20 or 25 kilometers altitude while you land it. I do this to land every stage of my missions.

FMRS is the mod for recovering lower stages like that. Lets you play both halves and then combines the saves. There's also StageRecovery but with that you don't play the landing, just spam parachutes and it will refund some of the cost.

The reason the controls stayed with the space plane instead of the carrier plane is because the game always stays with the root part when you decouple. If you want to be in control of the carrier plane when you decouple then you need to re-root in the VAB to make one of the carrier cockpits the root part.

I think you forgot to note that KSP is a game and is made easier than real life and the end of Kerbin's atmosphere is about 70,000m based on my experience of the game, while the end of Earth's atmosphere is 100,000m thus making it 190.50% harder to reach orbit in real life, factoring in the costs.

For your carrier plane... why not using FMRS? its a mod that lets you do this, It uses quicksaves to let you come back in time and fly the second ship, and land it. It then goes back to you primary save and do the equivalent of recovery the landed portion, into your "main" save. In this case here you would have flown the spaceplane to orbit then switched back to the launcher, landed it, then it would have bring you back to the space plane, and gave you back the money for the launcher.
