Try setting the reaction wheels to “SAS only”, then you can keep SAS on and it’ll help fight the flipping.

A tip on flippy rovers for everyone: Play around with wheel friction settings (to those who can't find it - I believe you need to have "advanced tweakables" enabled - or whatever they're called). In my experience, it's better to have low friction and have the vehicle slide around a bit than have it flip all the time xD Also, a vehicle with the wheel base wide and short will be less prone to flipping but more likely spin out of control. Narrow and long will give you the opposite effect so you need to find the sweet spot. And as for Matt and his video - really cool, as usual. The rover design is really nice to look at :D

Here's a tip (pun intended) if you right click on the reaction wheels, you can select "Pilot only", "SAS only", or "Both"(standard). If you set it to SAS only, it won't start rotating when you press forward, but it will try to keep the vessel pointing in the correct direction.

I just embrace the fact, that it will flip and add wheels on the roof. Now, it could still land on the sides, so I also add a telescoping piston on each side. When extended it will topple over to one of the two good sides. The ruggedized wheels have a higher impact tolerance than max speed, so there really is no failure scenario. Have fun racing carefree across any surface.

A bit of feedback from a recent subscriber - I only recently started playing KSP, so I don't have a lot of the knowledge that you might take for granted. If you're struggling for stuff to say at different times in the video, talk about what parts you used for the current operation. Your description of how to effectively orbit on this video was really useful and I could have learned even more by knowing specifically which engines were firing and why you selected them. Thanks for these videos, they've really kick started my foray into KSP.

I one circumnavigated Duna in a curiosity rover recreation I did. I think I quicksaved every minute of the mission, as unless it was in a flat, if the rover hit a bump a millimeter high it would fly into the air at 10m/s. The rover worked perfectly on Kerbin, I guess Duna’s gravity just likes to bully rovers.

I find RCS is the key to accurate manoeuvres. I do a lot of rendezvous reliant missions, so most of my craft have RCS anyway, but I typically put a couple of forward and backward thrusters at least on my craft so that I don't need to spin right the way round if I overshoot by a fraction of a m/s. You can adjust each axis accurately in turn even without a full setup, and your command pods typically have enough monopropellant storage on their own.

The trick with rovers was (it's been a while, so the details are sketchy) decoupling the rover controls from the reaction wheels. Then you can turn on the reaction wheels to keep you from rotating, while using the rover controls to drive around without the rover controls causing the reaction wheels to spin you around. I forget the specifics, but I was doing crazy jumps on Mun with this method and never flipped over. Broke a lot of wheels, though.
@decus9544
@decus9544 4 жыл бұрын
For a stable rover you want the centre of gravity to be as low to the ground as possible and the wheel connection point to be as high as possible. The point is to minimise the rotational moment induced by any sideways force on the vehicle. I'd recommend: - Flattening the bottom of the vehicle, so that... - You can increase the height at which you connect the wheels whilst maintaining the same ground clearance, and... - Putting all the heavy stuff like batteries, etc, on the floor of the vehicle where possible. You also want the vehicle to be as wide as possible to prevent the centre of mass from moving over the wheels on the side that the vehicle is tipping, so if still unstable after the above: - Increase the width of the vehicle (though to be fair it is pretty wide already. If still not stable (and I can't remember if you need a mod for this): - Reduce the friction coefficient of the wheels, and... - Reduce the turning authority of the wheels, increasing your turning circle but reducing the chance of over-turning and tipping the vehicle, and... - Throttle the power and/or torque going to the wheels in the VAB to make it easier to keep it below whatever maximum safe speed you end up with (which will probably always be below 20m/s or even 15m/s on Duna on account of the low gravity unless you really go all out on making something ultra-stable). I recommend playing with a mod that neuters SAS/ reaction wheels, to learn how to make stuff that is passively stable :)

Regarding the thought about correction burns and MechJeb: as a very-longtime MJ user I can tell you, you'll always need them. The only thing MJ does is reduce them, but since most correction burns are barely in the 2 digit margin, that's not much of a saving. What is though for me is not having to watch the rocket for half a minute or longer while burning with dV optimized engines vs more oompf. Main reason I use MJ. And the easy setting up of nodes. And a tip for rover driving: the original wheel mods back before they became vanilla had the steering on the translation controls, not the rotation controls, so IKJL instead of WSAD.

What I usually do is set wheel controls to ijkl just like translation controls, and then I can use wasd to engage reaction wheels and adjust the attitude of the rover. With this I managed to drive some 20kms on Minmus without losing rover parts, just make sure that the wheels are mostly aligned with the direction of travel while you are in the air and the landing should be smoother.

Some things that help rovers: Try having different pairs of wheels do the steering, both pairs is almost always a bad idea Lower the body relative to the wheels *Strengthen the spring strength on the wheels Lengthen the wheelbase Make the wheels wider Change the reaction wheels so they help you drive Limit front brakes, strengthen back brakes Put science, batteries, solar panels, and lights inside other more crash resistant parts (almost like a roll cage) Lower the center of mass in general, if it's below the axles it becomes very hard to flip

If I remember correctly, you can change if wheels can turn or not, so, you can turn either the front or back wheels turning off, and make it 4 wheel drive, but 2 wheel steer

To help deal with your SAS rover woes - Bind the wheel throttle to a different key. I like Shift/Ctrl for forward and reverse. That way you don't flip the rover every time you press 'W' to move forwards.

I know it's a bit late but try turning the friction control to manual in the wheels, and start around 1.5 in the back and 1.0 in the front, you can keep going up from there, it will flip less if even at all

19:21 this is exactly as I felt the first time I did a dress mission and back on my way back with a perfect trajectory my decoupled kept spontaneously combusting and the heat shield would not be able to deploy it took me 3 hours just to get to that point

If you set reaction wheels to SAS only you can haul ass across any surface and do some epic crater jumps with little to no danger. 30 m/s stable surface speed with no problems, the Mun is a blast!
