not an alt history mission but would be an interesting challenge: reverse moon launch. start from any of the moons in the kerbol system, land on kerbin and then return to the starting moon.

idea for a video (i don't have discord so i'll just leave it here): what if you where to make a little rover, wich kan hop between plannets? in orbit there is a little craft wich it docks to when in space, it flies to a other planet, it undocks, it lands, does sience, and takes of again. it can refuel on the planets, and an engineer can reset the landing ecuipment. it fits in with the small station theme, and i think it would be fun having this little 2-3 kerbals craft being exposed to the heats of moho, and the icey colds of eeloo. if you like it, like so matt (hopefuly) sees it.

9:22 I would love to see you do a Moon mission based off of the 1969 STS concept. A 2-stage fullly reusable space shuttle would fly to LEO and dock to a small orbiting station, where a Nuclear Lunar transfer shuttle was docked. Then the astros would board the nuclear shuttle and fly to Lunar orbit where another small orbiting station was. A lander would be attached to this station and the astros could board it and land.

Matt: The launch vehicle for LUNEX was to be based on a USAF design concept called "Space Launch System" (yes the same but a 1960s version seen here: www.astronautix.com/s/sls.html) which was based on Air Force studies which concluded that while Liquid Hydrogen rockets were probably going to be the most efficient type to use they were not all that efficient from the the initial launch so needed high power 'boosters' for the initial 'stage' of the vehicle. Since the AF at the time we heavily investing in solid rocket boosters (and there was an idea at the time that these could be built and used much cheaper than the more expensive liquid propellant rockets) the 'first' stage of each SLS (originally enough named "A", "B", and "C" for which we should forgive the AF as at least they had moved on from the late 40s convention of "Grandmother", "Mother", and "Baby" which was how the 1946 "World Circling Rocket" stages were named but I digress) was paired large solid rocket motors (up to four) mated to a core stage powered initially by a liquid hydrogen version of the ubiquitous LR87 (www.astronautix.com/l/lr87lh2.html) still the only liquid engine to be tested/operated with all three of the 'big-3' liquid propellants, (kerosene/LOX, LH2/LOX and storerable propellants) but later to be replaced by the AF funded J2 (www.astronautix.com/j/j-2.html) rocket engines. The SRBs would lift the stack initially much like the (then) planned upgraded Titan launch vehicle at which point the LH2 stages would push the stack the rest of the flight. While it wasn't likely they AF was going to get anywhere with the actual LUNEX mission it's a shame we didn't see more interest in the SLS itself as it would have given the US a very broad launch capability by the late 60s from medium payloads carried by the "A" all the way up to Saturn-class payloads in the most powerful "BC" vehicle. @randycampbell6307
@randycampbell6307 4 жыл бұрын
@@badbeardbill9956 Yep, (SLS-1960 in the link above) while I doubt the monster "C" booster would have been built as planned, (25ft in diameter, 173ft long) as it would have needed the massive but un-built M1 (or 12 J-2 engines) hydrolox engines and also massive 180 inch diameter Solid Rocket Boosters. (The Shuttle and Titan SRB's are only 120 inches) But I suspect actually building the SLS-1960 would be a major challenge in KSP given the control needs and the fact the first part of the flight is with SRBs alone. (Hopefully Matt takes that as a challenge? :) )

8:36 The Saturn V as was could probably put it into _orbit._ It would use all of the S-IVB's propellant, but it might be able to do it. 140 tons is a lot to work with. For TLI, it probably could have done it with an S-ID first stage and a NERVA S-IVB. S-ID would drop the outer 4 F-1s after 70% of the propellant was spent, and the NERVA S-IVB offers a huge boost in capacity thanks to wonderful nuclear thermal propulsion.

Hey Matt, I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on motors, rotors and propellers because I can't for the life of me figure it out. Everything online is either from before stock propellers were added and people had to get creative, or they are building their own propellers and explaining rotors. Do you think you could explain how the stock propellers and rotors work?

Personal favorite alternate history moon landing story: one of the many soviet lander designs was using a full Soyuz coupled to a proton kick stage for a direct decsent lander design. Always thought it looked really nice and kerbal with the big lander stage and long long ladder. Sadly there isnt a whole lot of info out there about it.

Could you attempt a Sea Dragon? In theory able to carry 550 tonnes to orbit and its launch platform was the ocean!

You should recreate the Falcon nine drone ship landing! Also, in order to help with air launched missions, look in curse forge for air park. It will keep the plane stationary whilst you get the rocket into orbit sort of. Have a great day/night (I don’t know what time it is for you)

Create the Lunar Gateway using only Falcon 9 style reusable rockets, expert mode is landing only back on the KSP launchpad, insane mode is to reuse the rockets w/o recovering them using in-game mechanics ;)

My first mun landing was a very smooth landing, however I only had 780m/s of fuel, so for me it wasnt possible to return back. I ended up having to make a rescue mission (which somehow worked really well) and was able to recover the data and the pilot and scientist. During that rescue mission, my final stage still had like 3000m/s of fuel during my mun escape orbit towards kerman.

I would suggest a starlink inspired stage of a lander/rover vehicle (or a individual vehicle as a whole) so that a new exploration of a body would be set for planet wide for communications. How ever you spin it I'm sure a multiple satellite deployment would look really nice.

How about doing a Space Shuttle Mun landing? I know it was basically a LEO "space truck" only, but that would've been one heck of an alternative history if the Shuttle design could have literally gone further. Dunno if and/or what you'd want for a payload, though.

I really want you to do a Martian mission, where the rescue mission is on the way back to earth and need refueling, before getting Jebediah on Duna that has to get to an old lander by rover. And use that to get to the rescuers without maneuver nodes and maybe some jet pack magic. I think you'd love to set it up and execute the mission and even more some Matt Lowne trademarked commentary :D

it's not a recreation of an actual space mission, but if you found a way to get a real solar system (I don't know how, I don't actually play the game) and made a ship packed full of RCS thrusters, seeing a recreation of the thrusters only slingshot to Ganymede from The Expanse would be a treat.
