Awesome video as usual :) What about a scaffolding around the SStO'nt you can undock, on which the jet engines and drop tanks are mounted. Maybe a probe core on there, too. Then you could redock with the structure in LKO after returning. I love your narration style!

4:00 Ideally you want to intercept Moho at its periapsis. Or more accurate, at its ascending/descending point closer to the periapsis. Yes you need more dv for the transfer burn but you save that dv difference and more on braking at Moho. Also, there's a way to significantly reduce dv you need to get to Moho: gravity assist at Eve. With that, it's very achievable to visit Moho with regular SSTO that does not drop parts. 6:20 To deal with the "Moho curse": you can burn to just barely exit its SoI and stay interplanetary in orbit close to Moho's. And then you can plan your optimal transfer from interplanetary space. Moho's Oberth effect is negligible so you're not even losing that much dv on that.

you mentioned how Moho has the transfer bug, but it's also the same on Duna for many people, myself included, and I've personally experienced it once leaving Minmus' SOI but not every time on Minmus

Would a reusable SSTO with staging be feasible? E.g. you leave the "aerodynamic" part of the SSTO in LKO, do your interplanetary trip, then an Apollo style landing, then you gather back your command module, and reattach to the aerodynamic part before reentry. I suspect docking ports would make this extremely hard but it also does sound very very cool!

Yup, it would be. The idea did cross my mind, but i only thought about it towards the end of the vid production. Its something ill likely explore in the future :P

i've had this idea before, kinda like a spaceplane and a payload except the payload is a rocket, and they're so tightly integrated and designed for each other that it'd be impractical to use either part with something else

Decoupling sideboosters makes your "spaceplane" tot technically SSTO. Those sideboosters are your 1st stage

I would call this an SSTLKO, emphasizing the fact that it's only single stage until LKO in the same way STOVL implies that an aircraft COULD take off vertically, but without any useful payload.

the only reason for you to hold on to those empty jet-stage boosters and carry them into orbit was for the craft to technically qualify as an ssto but then you either deorbit it or leave it as space debris so? i feel like the craft itself did not want to do that, like there was no reason to do that except only to "make" it an ssto :/ dont get me wrong im not hating im just thinking if it was like a separate 'craft' that could at least de-orbit itself then there would be no contest, it's two crafts, one's the SSTO, the other is the plane. but with actual, dumb boosters it kind of asks the question of where the line is (especially when the boosters dont even get it to orbit on their own oop) great content, ssto's are hard to optimize, i can't do better

Yup, the stupidity of lugging the jets all the way to space for no other reason then for them to end up as space debri is not lost on me xD I did experiment with adding seperatrons and have them de-orbit the spent stages after separation, but i quickly found out that it required a lot of fine tuning for the boosters to fly straight with out any sas control, so i decided that spending hours to make the jets de-orbit is not really worth the effort.

Well i do think hydrogen tank's can add to the look of some builds, it for sure doesnt work for all of them (visually anyway). An alternate version of the h-tanks with a fairing around it should be a no brainer for the devs. Considering how much the community is asking for it, id be very surprised if it wont be added in a later patch.

Agreed. Hydrogen tanks don’t look very strong in atmospheres they need a fairing variant for future hydrolox rockets or other uses for hydrogen

oh ok, i like the layout of this SSTO but this is the most difficult build i've ever try to do, between the game bugs (like my wing rip off even before lighting up the engine or the camera setting automatically to orbit, the rudder who don't work when it's in the front of a build...) and the fact that the CoL is far from the CoG make it not so easy. I'm looking forward to the discord, i don't have much friends who plays KSP2 and they're not that much public servers out there too.

I think it's cheating, but only because you don't bring all the parts back to kerbin. If you split off the wings and jets in orbit, and picked them up on your way back, I'd say it counts.
