If you don’t want to leave the RED warning areas of the coast for a shelter, watch any video of what happened on the Mississippi coast during hurricane Katrina. The quick and catastrophic storm surge was more than could be fathomed even though people were warned. Many people DID not survive the 10ft-15ft+ storm surge, at high tide, with waves on top of that, with 100mph+ winds etc. And, if they did survive, they were forever changed. Please seek safety.

I will tell you what he can do at this point. beg, borrow or steal, an rv, it's life or death, load everyone up, find the best built parking garage, drive up at least 4 floors park out of the open area from wind, hunker down & pray. This is their only best chance of survival at this late hour. Hes talking brave now, but listen when you have meteorologists on air claiming THIS storm will be a Helene AND Milton put together, it's the WORST they have ever seen. In theory, you could bike out if you don't mind riding along with car traffic. A bicycle would probably make better time with lane splitting in stalled traffic. I can easily ride 30 miles in a couple of hours on flat ground.

I lived in Ft. Myers in 1991 -1993 it's my favorite place on earth I ever lived. I'm so upset about this monster storm. I have several family members in that area, cape coral and Orlando, port Charlotte. This is terrifying! Some are stuck there. They are Going to ride it out. I’ve lived in Florida 30 years. Been through 20+ Hurricanes including hurricane Andrew in the 90s. The homes since then have been built to withstand Miami dade hurricane building requirements. Which is 70% of the homes. Evacuate the areas that are within the storm surge. But there are shelters. We will be just fine. This is a strong storm but Floridians are 90% prepared. We get 2-4 weeks of supplies. Electricity restores based on your grid. If you are on the same grid as the hospital, police departments or government agencies then you get immediate power. The further away you are the longer it takes to get power back

Loyd Ford I am a Jamaican who experience a Cat.5 and brother this wind shake even concrete and steel foundations much less these match box which are in Florida. It's not too late to reconsider your mind blowing decision to stay. If the wind don't blow this house I am seeing the water will flood and relocate this house into the sea. Loyd Ford, I moved to Tampa in 1980. I know when to leave because of experience and common sense. I left three days before Helene and remained out of state. You say you bought some generators that run on gas, do they work underwater? My question is, did you buy your stubborn dad and yourself scuba diving gear, oxygen tanks, and masks, etc? That way you can breathe underwater when checking on your generators.

It's not all at sea level, in fact east of Tampa is some of the highest land in the state (85+ feet above sea level). Just google Florida land elevation map. The tip is actually the worst place to be if you're considering elevation (hence why the everglades are where they are).

The shoulders on main highways have been opened for transit. Police said if a car breaks down, they'll push it into the grass. This is not the first hurricane here. The southbound lanes WILL open for northbound transit, obviously. The opposite will be done when residents return. Thank you for your concern.

You can take many other large roads that aren’t highways. Roads like A1, 19, 41 and a bunch of little roads that will get you out of the storms direct path. I lived in Florida in Tampa and Daytona area. I wouldn’t stay anywhere near Tampa Bay. An afternoon rainstorm will flood the roads. This is altogether different and anyone who stays (& I personally know many who are) is crazy!!!

They need to open both directions of the highway to double the highway lanes to get north. Same with those heading east-west. .

Living in the Caribbean where we always have to keep on our toes during the Hurricane season, EVACUATE!! I’m glad our country haven’t had major casualties if we ever get hit. Thing is, No matter how much we joke and barely take things seriously, WE STILL DO. We secure our home, clear debris, make sure we have everything we need and bunker down. It’s not like we can truly evacuate. We just have to bunker tf down. Natural disasters you don’t take lightly. If he feels confident that nothing is going to happen to them, he knows his plans. Let’s hope it works out.

Write your name and social security on your arm. If you have to call when hurricane is coming in. No one will be able to get to you. Call sheriff's depth or police department see if they can help prior to hurricane coming in. They won't be able to reach you as roads ... will be extremely dangerous for them

Yes, that was said in North Carolina as well and it’s become a common request, put your name & Social in black marker on your body so you can be identified if you do not follow evacuation orders. Not everyone has the vehicle, the know how or the money to leave town. If you want people to evacuate, you have to make sure that there is room in the shelters for the demand. BTW, Helene was 500 miles wide. If you live in Florida, all of this is par for the course. However, what happened in North Carolina is beyond unexpected & shocking!

I cant afford to evacuate. Thpugh im relativly safe in the lady lake area. But even if the hurricane was making a direct hit. I cant afford to go anywhere. I havent worked in 3 months my new career starts in Nov. Im living off credit cards and barely paying for groceries right now. I literally cant afford to go anywhere. And i know there are many in the same boat as me. We just cant afford to leave. I finished nursing school in the summer slump and no one was hiring, new grads require a 1yr residency. Its expensive to train a new grad... nursing shortage doesnt apply to new grads so i had some bad luck there

I live in Phoenix. Used to live in Vegas. I've done that drive MANY times, even on a motorcycle. Takes about 3.5hrs to clear that much distance, and that's even speeding thru certain parts.

i survived hurricane IRMA.. in 2017 and THAT showed up on the richter scale.. it was worse than a Cat 5 .. there is no Cat 6 .. i would describe it as a Cat 7 or 8 even... my heart goes out to all the animals in the path.. all animals who have been abandoned. and all people who could not evacuate.. kids.. elderly people.. god be with you ALL. this is like .. experiencing it myself.. anxiety is very high. i know how bad this can be.. and i pray and hope it weakens as quickly as it got stronger. these storms are natural but the severity of them is NOT. this is NOT climate change. if u so care about climate change.. quit meat dairy and fish. bec those industries are killing the planet. please wake up.. and overstand that these things are MANMADE .. manipulated by MAN.. the powers that be.. these storms are NOT normal. may God be with you all. sending love and protection and praying with you all.. from the Caribbean.. god help us all.

Even just 100 years ago they had very little warning and none of the amenities and technology we have today. The homes will be there. The worst case is the flood damage and black mold. Noob residents that have been through 2-3 storms are still new to hurricane. We have people who have been here 50 years and this is old hat. My sister lives in an evacuation center in Clearwater.
