This song is a love letter to Chicago, “the city by the lake, the place where you were born.” In concerts Billy tends to change the lyrics to “the place where I was born” giving homage to the bands roots. The classical epic grandiose soundscape of the song is like a renaissance painting during a time when music was very commercialized as a “grunge” product. I would draw Renaissance style art to this music and transcend to a place of Michaelangelo and Shakespear within the context of post modern art. Also, can’t go without mentioning the inspiration of “The Trip To The Moon” the silent film Méliès masterpiece. The Smashing Pumpkins are this generations Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Tonight Tonight was inescapable when it was released. Literally every 5 minutes you heard it! Lol. After the video won all the awards we had a couple more years to live through it - but I'm glad it's getting some love from new fans, regardless. I've always loved them, but there will never be anything better than Siamese Dream. Billy Corgan was in serious therapy at the time and you can tell he was doing the shadow work through the writing process, FOR REAL. I was in Chicago (SP's hometown) with my bro and sis in 93 - our dad had just passed and we were there for the funeral. SD had just been released, so we went to the mall to buy it. There aren't words that can accurately describe what it felt like for us to hear that album during that time. They say that music is what feelings sound like, and they're correct. Especially that week!

A must list is…..(some are repeats from others) Soma Mayonnaise Rhinoceros Spaceboy Disarm You will not be disappointed….”Soma” I think is exactly what you love about them. This song got me in my feelings. Brings me back to my younger days. Now that I’m almost 50, I think back on life more and more and to my formative years in my 20s knowing that they were so special. But when you’re in that moment, you often don’t realize how special they are and you question if you got the most out of the time you had. The start of this song just hit me hard today. “Time is never time at all You can never ever leave Without leaving a piece of youth” If you’re reading this and in the prime of your life, milk every single second of it. Take it in your hands and squeeze everything you can out of it. Have a great day. ✌️

man, i remember the day I discovered smashing pumpkins it was a good couple of years going through their songs. so many good songs - Mayonaise, 1979, Spaceboy, Today. I should listen to them again, it's been a while.
@Luindir225 жыл бұрын
Makes me smile hearing you for the second time say that their name doesn't match their softer style. Can't wait til you hear some more from them and see their heavier side. That is what is beautiful about the Pumpkins. They have these nice softer ballads like this or Disarm, Shame, Luna, To Forgive, etc. But then they have heavy songs like Zero, The Everlasting Gaze, An Ode to No One, Jellybelly, Tales of a Scorched Earth, White Spyder, etc. One of the more diverse and prolific 90's rock bands out there. They have ballads, rock anthems and borderline metal songs. Easily one of my favorite all time bands outside of metal.
@AltCTRLF85 жыл бұрын
Tom totally agree about their diversity...for example, on disc 2 of MCIS, you get 1979, tales of a scorched earth, then thru the eyes of ruby lol you wouldn’t think those type of songs would come from the same band let alone the same CD
@nicolerizzo13145 жыл бұрын
I love your videos... the way you react to the transitions in songs, you can tell you really feel music and you're really open-minded about different things. They have a lot of really good heavy songs too. They're really good at the heavy ones and the soft ones. There is a lot for you to explore. They were my favorite band for many many years. ❤

Soundtrack of my youth. So many memories, flooding back. So many people, lovers, friends too, loved and lost, forever gone from this earth now. Truly a classic. This album though? (A DOUBLE album actually) Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness? One of the greatest albums ever made. Flawless. From start to finish. Still have the double cd album. That I Bought in the 90’s from the now completely gone and defunct company called Tower Records. It’s true it will never be the same. But the memories, they live and remain the same, forever. Thumbs up if you too have memories, from this song, album, times, years, that will live in you forever. 👍

Thank you bro for finally giving the Pumpkins their due. These guys are OG. Everybody sleeps on them these days, but back in the day.....man, these dudes were in the middle of it all and really got things going. Keep exploring them, you won't regret it. They cover the whole spectrum of soft and gentle like this song...to kick you in the teeth hard prog rock. The lead singer, Billy Corgan, is a legit Guitar God...there's video of him literally shredding the life out of guitars on stage and leaving them to die. And the drummer, Jimmy....top 5 drummer in history maybe? For sure #1 of the 90's. Pay attention to how amazing he is.. and how as talented as he is he NEVER overplays the song. Can you tell I'm a huge Stan for them? lol
