I was in LA last weekend where I grew up in Downey CA. Boy has KTLA changed. Sad what it is now, nothing like this anymore.

Sadly, today's KTLA news looks just all the rest of the stations; a two-anchor desk, with unskilled reporters who can't pronounce certain names or places, and goof around, especially on the morning news. Hal Fishman, Larry McCormick and Stan Chambers were the dream team of KTLA back then.

This is a time machine trip back. KTLA had great movies back then.

Back then, all the independent stations in LA didn't have any original programming so would show movies at 8pm. Every week would have a theme, like Al Pacino week, or wacky teen themed movies.

Good reporting on the number one news story at that time in L.A., the Hillside Strangler. Notice how much time was spent on what were the latest developments in the story, a recap of who the victims were and where they were found, and especially how women were learning to defend themselves(and tips to those women out there watching who were not at the particular class being shown). Useful info all around. What has happened to KTLA news today is very sad:( If Hal Fishman were still around...

I saw Hal Fishman at an Italian restaurant in 2006 before he died. R.I.P.

Based on the information regarding the date the final victim featured in the Hillside Strangler story, it appears that this newscast was recorded on December 1, 1977.

I love how this broadcast gets briefly interrupted by CB radio. I remember as a child this would happen from time to time when I watched TV.

damn this really brings back some memories. I was 12 when this aired here in los angeles. I grew up here in norwalk, which is in l.a. county. I remember hal fishman and larry the most. Richard Ramirez is the night strangler.

The newscast theme is Prestige Theme 1 by Keith Mansfield. It was also theme music for WTVT CBS-13 Tampa, WOTV NBC-8 Grand Rapids, WISH CBS-8 Indianapolis, and WPTZ NBC-5 Plattsburgh from the 70s to the mid 80s.

This video referenced the Los Angeles Strangler AKA The Hillside Strangler back in the late 70's. Really cool to see old news footage from that era during these infamous murders in LA history. Always found KTLA right at historic LA news events growing up.

cb interference at 4:30 this was most likely recorded with the top loading VCR at the time. VHS. Very high tech in that year. No remote, No self tracking. My grandfather had one, still, in his norwalk home up until 2000! It worked, but he bought a dvd player that year. lol

2;08... Larry McCormick, who played "Thatcher" in a JEFFERSONS episode. Watching that clip, before I googled up more about him, I thought he could've easily been a reporter; his voice sounded like he could open a newscast, "From the desert, to the sea, to all of Southern California, Good evening; here's the latest at six..." Wow...

I was very very young when this happened. Nevertheless, I have read a lot of books about the “Hillside Strangler”. It makes me mad that Kenneth Bianci is still alive! One of the younger teenagers was a student of one of my high school teachers. When my teacher told me about her murder, it had happened years before but she was still very emotional about it.
