KTLA5 has the best coverage I've seen of Castaic and Tick fires. The reporter is outstanding. FIxed wing and helicopter aircraft pilots are amazingly accurate. It can't be easy flying low through smoke and heat. Sorrow for the families that have lost their property. Few disasters are as devastating as wildfires.

People need to know that if the houses start burning, the fire department won't drop water or phoscheck on your house because the water will cause the roof to collapse. They will only drop water or phoscheck on the homes of woodsy owl, yogi bear and bambi.

Where are the trucks? We have seen mostly firefighting aircraft and very few trucks. Either they are hiding under the smoke or the ground response is really sad! I hope the pool owner with the hose at 7:00 has something bigger than a garden hose. It's not hard for a pool owner to set up a 5hp pump from the pool and drive something almost like a fire hose. A big enough water main tap could do the same. The most restricted point on most garden hoses is the spigot valve, not the hose, so a bigger valve means more water.

At 45:45 , they have 4 fullsize trucks on the highway below, where I doubt they have hydrants and they have little to defend. They should go to the houses above, especially if they have water cannon, though I suppose they can take the offensive from there and use their cannon with the wind until they empty their tanks, then move to the top and the hydrants.

In some part's of the fire it was the homeowner's fault? In the mountains we have to clear 20 to 100+ feet from the house! Along I-5 the tree's grew up and over the back yard wall! It should have been cleared 50 to 100 feet minimum down from the wall towards I-5!

At 41:55 , we see an excellent scooper drop right behind a house, but at the same time we see an engine in front of that same house. Does that engine have a water cannon? It should! and if it did, the high priced aircraft wouldn't be needed, since we just saw how water cannon have the range to spray clear over the house to a fire behind it.

at 31:30 , I'm a fan of water cannon, even at the expense of aircraft I think. If those trucks have cannon, they can use that on top and should not have to put people on the roof. at Palisades, they had cannon with the range to spray clear over the houses from the road onto the fire in back, but they should have had more, closer, to get there sooner. Such cannon can be operated by one man in each engine, so they can be dispersed, with full crews showing up later from further. All wheel drive military surplus conversions can both save money, enabling more of them for closer positioning, and allow off road positioning. The 10x10 PLC/HEMTT is the best chassis I have seen.

This is a great demonstration of an effective air attack. Sometimes right after a drop, I think miss...dropped short. But what do I know. I can just see that the combination of fixed wing and helicopter saved the day here. The helicopters have been very accurate with their drops. The Super Scoopers are impressive with their drops too. Without this air support, this neighborhood would be on fire!

Excellent video work, narration as the newsmen knows a bit about fire suppression. As a 64 year resident all I see is homes being built in FIRE PRONE areas and thats all I see. In the 1970’s I helped fight fires all over Kern L.A. Tulare county. It drys-it dies, its meant to burn. This is the natural cycle today just as its always been historically. Population increases, more housing is needed. Building in these regions were not considered as public threat to county authorities whom issued building and development permits.

If IC would have this coverage in real time would be great for tactics and deployment of crews. The air tankers have missed and wasted quite some drops we can see even foam in the streets and roofs. The drops should be W-E and not N-S. And now I am going to be criticized for sure but I have done this dozens and dozens of times so I know it works. One pumper (1000 Gallons each) on the road below in each fire front would be enough to put out this amount of fire. What would be needed one inch line ( with storz couplings ) and fast moving up hill. It could also be done from above and going down a little more heat, 1,5" would be better for that but even with 1" could be done. I know a lot of FF disagree but I have done it even in more intense fire fronts and I know it works, but is necessary to move fast. It is more or less a SOP with my FF in similar situations. We work fast we deploy fire hoses fast and we move fast. And over here in this fire is 100% safe because it is always possible to work from the black from bottom to top.

These new subdivisions should not have been built sitting in a high fire area. Ppl should have warned to potential danger. That's why these areas were never made for homes. Should have made a fire break around the community with potable water installed for this emergency. Wish they ask me. I know how to design this. If I were a leader of those communities I would make it mandatory to own a gas powered high volume/ high pressure suction pump if you have a pool on your property for a case just like that fire along the 5 that followed the slope up to the rear of the homes,,, Couldn't the city build a tower some 60 or 70 feet off the ground with a swivel snorkel fire head for distance and volume spaced out every 200 yards as a preventive measure ???
