This convinced me to buy a brand new 790. It was brilliant... when it worked. It went back 9 times to 3 different dealers in the first year. The dealers where rude and unhelpful... I ended up hating it and traded it for a 2003 gsxr1000. Not once has it let me down.

Value proposition of the Tenere 700: It's cheap to buy, cheap to insure, cheap to run. Parts are readily available, based on the MT-07 engine platform that's proven reliable with low maintenance costs. No fancy electronic gizmos that can get faulty or intrude in your riding, you learn to become a better rider rather than having the electronics save your mistakes. Imo electronics should be there to save you in hazard moments, not to make worse riders "better" by doing the job for them. Also, saves cost and weight. It's a simple bulletproof package out of the box, even if something does go wrong its going to be 10x easier to fix than anything that might happen to the KTM. And this is probably the biggest factor in chosing a proper ADV bike, and not just the highway slayers that are approved for knobbies (looking at you, GS1200). In the end, when saving 3 grand on an adventure bike, how much suspension can you get for that kind of money, and still have enough left to pay repair bills and fuel for years? The whole point of adventure riding is to have a sturdy reliable machine that is cheap and easy to fix, and you can depend on it getting you to your destination. The Tenere ticks all those boxes, so everything above that becomes a surplus where value for money play the biggest role. Here, all the KTM bikes start losing out to the competition.

I couldn't agree more. Simple, affordable Japanese reliability. I hope Yamaha keep their wits about them and not give in to the whims of "bad riders" to add a host of rider aids like what happened to the Africa twin. Always keep a standard base model in the lineup without all the tech for the riders that don't want it
@Real_MisterSir
@Real_MisterSir 4 жыл бұрын
@@paulvandervyver4223 Yes exactly. We are already seeing it with liter bikes, where you can't extract the performance anymore without majorly overstepping natural abilities of most riders, so they keep adding more electronics to make up for it, which in the end just means you pay more for the same experience, and more intrusion. I hope adv bikes will follow the upcoming superbike trend of focusing on the experience, rather than the spec sheet and just fixing every issue with more electronics. Before we know it, they might as well replace the rider entirely.

@@Real_MisterSir Ktm is not even getting close to Yamaha reliability and making a bike that is 40% more expensive then the T7 with some good suspension package and electronics is not going to stop people from buying the yamaha as it is a cracking bike with the most fun engine I have ever ridden... Good brakes and good suspension for 90% of people out there.. I have tested Husky,Ktm , Aprilia and was a GS owner prior to owning the T7 and I am happy that I have made the decision. Yamaha is no stranger to electronic gizmos and controls (R1M, anyone?). But those things really aren't necessary on the T7. Organic control is better in some cases, and this is one of those cases.

@matty d Did I hit a nerve? I'm sorry the needlessly expensive bikes do not improve on the desired adv package. Sure if you're not sufficiently skilled or adventurous, go ahead and spend the extra money on the KTM and have it save your wealthy ass :) I am in fine position to buy either bike, but nothing the KTM offers over the Tenere is interesting, quite the opposite actually. Also remember this is subjective, I'm just stating that anything the KTM offers above the Yamaha, is only valid for a niche target who specifically wants those things. For everyone else, they just add extra cost and needless complexity to a package that didn't need any extras. Perfection is not achieved when there is nothing more to add, but rather when there is nothing superfluous left to strip away.

Agreed completely. At my weight (150 lbs), I have no doubt a stock T7 would be perfectly fine for me, but even if not I could throw 1500-2000 bucks at suspension stuff and have a better bike, still for less money, that I know for certain will be MUCH more reliable and cheaper to own. Better looking to boot, and with an exhaust better sounding, too.

The price difference between KTM 790 and T7 is minuscule compared to other costs of adventure riding or even additional accessories. Also, its you that brings the concern about stuff getting damaged - "8.5k laying in a puddle" , etc. Basically, you got cheaper bike because obviously price was a big factor for you. Don't try to make it as if it was a "wiser choice" now. I got 790R and I'm having a blast - that bike is way more fun that T7, yeah it costs more and has faults that I have to fix but I don't mind that because I bought it for the experience it provides, not because it was a "good value".

I don't like how all the channels are afraid to comment on the reliability of KTM. Let's be honest here, KTM is a nightmare of maintenance and reliability. Especially for people in the USA were dealer support and parts are harder to come by. Since the T7 shares the engine with the Mt07, you have more available parts and knowledge on the bike. There is not competition here. The T7 is the bike that will define dual sports for years to come.

Nice comparison; came out about the way I figured. KTM all the way for me. I may be in the minority in thinking that it looks so much better than the T700, which I find to be quite ugly. I won't brand-bash like so many others, but the T700 does nothing for me. I do more street than off road for sure, and tend not to get carried away on middle- and heavyweight bikes anyways, so an S might be in my near future. It will take me anywhere I want to go, and I have no doubts about reliability. I've owned 4 KTMs and none of them have had any issues. I'm down to one, my trusty 640 Adventure, which has been just amazing, but the 790 will make a better two-up bike for long trips and won't give up anything offroad. I'm not even worried that the motor is made in China. KTM knocked it out of the park with the 790 for me.

@xzistpo
@xzistpo 4 жыл бұрын
mld this is exactly what I think too. Also, all these electronic gizmos are a pain In the ass when working on your bike. I mean even just basic maintenance is problematic. A friend of mine changed the oil on his multistrada and had to pay 100$ at the dealer so they would plug it to the computer to shut off the « change oil » warning. Now I just can’t imagine servicing a semi-active fork without being both a mechanic and a hacker (the later of which I am not at all) And I am not even talking about the time when all these gizmos will fail, and this time WILL come. All of this for gadgets I don’t even want to have in the first place. Needless to say, most new bikes turn me off for those reasons. Thats why I am holding on to my 2013 990SMT.

Thanks guys, great video! I have to take issue with the "we took these bike's to places where they should't go" comment. As a ~25/75 rider in Southern Colorado, i just have to say, the world of adventure riding is a lot 'rougher' than England and most of Europe have to offer. Not dissing these European reviews (I can't get enough while waitingfor our N. American Tenere), just adding that before saying things like "most people wouldn't take these bike's on this rough of trail" you might want to check out what trails adventure riders are actually riding in say, north and south america. In the Rocky Mountains we have inumerable 4x4 trails that take massively built up vehicles (a wench is often required) to pass, and for off road riders, thats our bread and butter. I have yet to see footage of a road anywhere near as rough as anything going into or out of Silverton/Ouray Colorado in Europe, for example. This isn't to brag, it's just something for "Adventure Bike riding reviews" to keep in mind while making huge sweeping statements about what riders elsewhere do with there bikes.

Shame you guys didn't elaborate on the options you can add to the KTM and how effective Rally mode is. Great comparison though. I got a chubby for the Adv R so I bought one. The up/down quickshifter is bloody marvelous offroad.

As an off-roader I didn’t prefer the quickshift I found that the slightest pressure on the lever would cut throttle as if I were about to initiate a shift. I keep it disabled. The Rally mode is incredible though and contrary to the video my bike keeps the settings between rides.
@stevecade857
@stevecade857 4 жыл бұрын
@@backroads_gb I know what you mean about the quickshifter and some light pressure but I've adjusted the height/angle of my shift lever and I don't have a big issue with it. For me the benefits outweigh the negative. I tend to stick my left foot slightly out so it's not over the lever, which ordinarily would be bad practice for catching things but, they still remain withing the protection of the tank lower. Still have to get the ergos dialed in for when standing (bar height / angle, clutch angle/length) so changing gear without using the clutch is much easier and far more comfortable especially as you can change down with the throttle open on the KTM quickshifter. It's also great for steep slopes where you need another gear and don't want to lose drive/momentum. I am not sure why the S with optional Rally mode would be any different to the R in remembering settings between power cycling. Mine also remembers the last mode it was in. Maybe the S they tested didn't have Rally mode?

Steve Cade I have an S with Rally mode maybe that is the key... I spent about 3 days tearing up a little bit of woods behind my house. Cleared about 700 miles of the KAT (Kentucky Adventure Tour) mostly offroad tracks through KY, WV, VA, and TN and I’m extremely happy with the bike. Totally out performed a buddies 1090r in terms of off road capability. In love with the bike!

So, best comparative review I've seen to date! I own both a 1290 Super Adventure and a 790 Adv R and the 790 Adv R is the bike I would have bought over the 1290 Super Adv had it been available in 2017 Most of my previous bikes were Yamaha, my first being a YZ125 when I was a kid, an XT500 when I was 18, then came the IT enduro bikes, Maico 490 Alpha 1, a TT600 and quite a few road bikes too.. When I test rode the 790 Adv "S" (non-R) at the dealer, I was impressed, this one had "RallyMode" enabled as well as the QS+ (quick shifter +) enabled and I was sold, but I wanted the 790 Adv R and ordered it then and there with QS+ and cruise control (I live in France and it's almost as bad as the UK with "safety cameras) Then came the announcement of the T7, so I had to mull as to whether I should have bought another Yamaha or my 2nd KTM I made the right choice, as you fine gentlemen said, the 790 Adv R is in a class of its own... Why didn't do a rundown on the RallyMode electronics and did the 790 Adv R you rode have QS+? Thanks for this video and I'll say it again... best comparative review to date!

So nobody made a suspension setting on the both bikes to check what's really possible? Well to be honest the biggest problem in Central Europe and in Germany even more is, that we have not much possibilities to go for long offroad rides! What a shame, would love to go out the whole day by just exploring the country side...

Id like the better suspension on the KTM, but dont give a shit about the blinking lights and processor power. 72hp is plenty for me. Id like to continue riding several thousand kilometers away from home, ride some gnarly tracks and trust that the bike will take me home, even after a spill or 10.. Which would i choose? Dumb question, eh?

Great and informative review. Anyway, the riding position of the standard 790 is completely wrong, IMO. Seems like when you try to close the door while sitting on the toilette. I love the lower position, but there is something wrong in the overall geometries. The handlebar is too narrow, and should be raised up of a couple of meters as minimum. I tested the standard and returned immediately back to the owner after 5 minutes. It is a total no-go for me. The T700 should be compared with the R version indeed, but the price difference would be too huge.

🙋🏻‍♂️ 790 owner here... I’m confused that you have to reset your settings when you shut the bike off. I know this was an issue with the other bikes in their ADV line but it’s been updated for the 790. At least the one I purchased in August and have about 3700 miles on the odometer now it has always kept my last settings upon killing the ignition and re-starting the bike.

For a ex -dirt biker who rode Yamahas there is no choice; the 700 is "the go". I used to own a couple of KTM 's, but I grew out of it. Then again, having ridden a Tiger 800 XCx around Oz since 2015, I would miss cruise control. Resetting the electronics after stopping isn't a huge issue if it is a matter of hitting a handlebar button. Trying that on a Tiger is a PIA. One learns to use the kill switch to avoid the need to reset. For 2K pounds you can get a lot of suspension work ( valves and springs) . Either would do as all road tourer. If I had to ride it in rough stuff the KTM with the better suspension would be my choice. It only has to save your arse once to offset the extra expense. Broken bones hurt a lot and cost a lot. Ask me how I know.

Plenty of people ride adventure bikes off-road but most of those riders treasure simple, reliable, cheap, proven, easy to fix motorcycles like the Suzuki DR650 and Kawasaki KLR650. You won't find a KTM dealership in outback Australia to fix your 790. More simple = more better!

Great discussion BUT I wish you would include service intervals and costs. There is a price to pay for getting 'race performance' out of a small engine and many KTM dual purpose bikes need expensive oil and changes at very frequent intervals, not to mention valve adjustments. I bet the Yamaha does not. And longevity is also a consideration in stressed engines. Did you mention weight, also a huge factor. In this sector, weight with battery and all fluids except fuel is what I want to know. If one bike has a 20L tank and another has a 12L tank then 'wet weight' comparisons are hardly informative. Thanks.

I was really looking forward to this head to head review. But I'm sorry guys, maybe I'm just feeling grumpy, but I got half way through and couldn't take any more. Al kept going on about the KTM being a naked bike (no it's an adventure bike, clear to see) and Mossy, whose motorcycle journalism I have huge respect for, obviously loves the sound of his own voice because you couldn't shut him up. Big fan of what you guys do, but this one wasn't for me.
