I've owned 4, and the only reason i got new ones was to get the newer tech on the newer bikes. Never had a problem with any of them. Worked at a KTM dealer for a while and the only bikes being brought in were guys doing oil changes and scheduled maintenance. and they put so many miles on every bike we sold, dirt and street.

I've done sort of a study on the WR-R, mostly since meeting you and Athena on KZbin three years ago. But also because so many other moto vloggers were riding them. They're actually some pretty amazing bikes, as you know. I've never ridden one, and I don't consider myself a dual sporter, even though I ride a 500 EXC. But I do love bikes and I am fascinated by the dual sport and ADV movement. From what I gather the WR-R is designed as a lower maintenance, high mileage machine that is better suited on road than the DR-Z or any of the EXC's. Better transmission ratios, geometry, and riding comfort. As you know, for more serious officianados, their two greatest deficiencies are easily solved with more displacement, aftermarket exhauat, and some suspension work. More power, better suspension... Not quite in the range of the KTM's, but far more versatile. You put a lot of road miles on your bike. EXC's will obviously do that too, but not as comfortably and you'll be using up those valuable engine hours quickly. There's a price for the high performance off road motors, and that's regular maintenance. My EXC is the most reliable rock solid dirt bike I've ever owned, but I track the hours and do all the regular maintenance when it's time. The WR-R just doesn't require that level of attention. And the mods that MDF has put together in the 310 package don't require any more maintenance than the stock bike. At least as far as I know. You have probably already talked with Kurt about that. I know he loves Daisy Chain. Speaking, if I may, for the ++Tribe, I think we all wanna see you rolling on Athena 2.0. You've been through SO much with that bike! Maybe, similar to what you said in the video, you might consider a used EXC, not fully off road like you mentioned but set up for full off road. (Like mine...) But still with that plate so you can connect trails. Then you can preserve that beautiful powder coating and paint on Athena 2.0 a little longer!

My mate has a 2010 KTM 300EXC and his always seems to be broken down. Both his front and rear shocks just died one ride fixed them, next ride his fronts died again. He just seems to have a few problems with his. My 2004 YAMAHA WR250F has had fork seals replaced, and that's about all that's broken on it, in there time I've owned it

Have had my '08 DRZ400SM for several years now and am looking to add another bike to the garage. As much as I like KTMs and would love to own one, the maintenance requirements worry me. I wish the Japanese companies would get on the ball and start making serious street-legal enduro & SMs again.
@humdinger57018 жыл бұрын
MSRP-ness- KTM 350 xcf -$9000 , yamaha wr250r - $7000... One of the big things I dont like about KTM's is the fuel tank and the inability to up the capacity much. If I had $10k and was gonna buy a bike I'd save just a bit longer and pick up a Africa twin and be happy for a very very long time.

I paid $4200 for a 2008 ktm 450 exc with 2700 miles on it at the time. About 3 months of my having it I put about 800 miles on it and I love it. I'm only 5' 8" so it is pretty tall for me but I make it work. The EXCs stock need some modifications done to really unlock then since they are leaned out to pass emissions but that's with almost every bike. but I plan to ride my ktm as long as I can!

On my second Katey M, they've been good to me. Easiest ones to maintain are the 2012 and newer 450/500--no timing chain and cam removal when you have to shim. Far more capable ride than my WRR was for advanced techniques. But then when Athena is done it could be much more KTM like. There is also a Hawaiian contingent of Beta riders, their 2 strokes are superb and 25% cheaper than going orange. Shame you can't plate them over there.

Also as far as ktm goes I have owned every brand except for aprilia(sp?) and the newer stuff since 2010 is bulletproof. This is my opinion and with what I have personally experienced and several friends of mine who are all owners. I think with how gorgeous athena is turning out, she should stay on the black top and you should pick up an xc or xcw!
