Having been homeless for the last 15 years, the greatest thing about Knate's "Hug or Handshake" is not JUST the caring. The lack of physical contact with ANYONE when someone is homeless is non-existent for the most part unless you're lucky enough to have a partner which is RARE. Ever seen the neglected orphans in Eastern Europe who never got touched? Feels kinda like that

My friend passed away at 25 last year after struggling with drug use and homelessness. God bless people like this man. I’m greatful to the people who helped me friend in his last weeks on earth , we’re all human beings who deserve love and help. That kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

Knate has a wonderful personality & heart. He talks to everyone as his equal & that makes all the difference in the world. What stuns me is how small the requests are from the people he helps, & how often they ask him if he could help their friends who have a greater need than theirs. There was one Gentleman who didn't want to take something from Knate, saying, "If you give it to me what are you going to do, you won't have it." I sobbed when I heard that.

Before I retired, I remembered we all could be just one job away from being homeless ourselves. Every morning my 4:30am wake up alarm was that song by Phil Collins..."Just another day in Paradise" to remind me of that fact. It is great that Nate supplies these people with food and goods they need, but even more than that, just the fact he is interacting with them as an equal, one human to another is even more important.

What he does for the community, whether it's a meal, clothing, gas, going to the grocery store, tent sleeping bag, helping others to get shower or a room for a night or two, getting, paying for someone's ID and so much more. Nate is so generous, with his time and what he does for others, giving others caring, kindness, compassion, and support, and maybe just ear, to others so they can be heard, that somebody is actually listening to them, that they're heard !
