For anybody who hasn't played the game and is concerned about the autoblock mechanic. It does not make defending yourself as random as it sounds. There's a mechanic in the game that causes your autoblock to be much more effective when holding back so for the most part you still need to think about when to block and hold back accordingly like you would in other fighting games. On top of that, the blade collision means that there's plenty of active defense maneuvers that you can do once you get more familiar with the movesets. Some attacks are naturally more defensive than others and if you know what you're doing and can read your opponent then you can very comfortably attack them while keeping your blade in a spot where it will still protect you.

On multiplayer: What online pvp community really needs imo is not native internet multiplayer (netcode, rewind, blahblah) but native organization of internet multiplayer. Yes it's pretty easy to install parsec etc, I play like that myself. But having to go outside of the game to organize multiplayer pvp is a hassle. Having native inbuilt ability to connect not only with your fellow friends but with random people playing the game free of additional hassle is very important. So if parsec was somehow integrated into HQ (installs together with it, access to parsec lobby from inside the game window) or if some similar solution could be found that would greatly improve online experience, i.e. increase appeal of the game.

Second: Please, feel free to take all the time to finish the game with no need to rush the development. There is no need to crunch, and there is no rush from the public to get the final version right now.

This game really reminds of the Bushido Blade series of games. I remember when I first played Bushido Blade on the PS1 and when I stabbed my opponent in the head and he died, I was so surprised. This was the first time playing a game without health bars, where 1 hit can decide a game. And it also had limb damage, which combined with the large stages created some interesting scenarios. Like getting stabbed in the leg and then trying to limp away while your opponent casually walks behind you before they finish you off.

It's awesome to include the community with your explanation's to all the mechanics and the decision making process behind it. The game is already at a great state as early access and brings much joy to us. You can feel that there is much love and care in Hellish Quart. It shows how independent developers and small studies care about their game and their community and it's so refreshing compared to all the marketing bravado from Big Studio AAA games, that literally charge 60€ to release a broken early access game with no actual concept expect microtransactions.

Very nice informative video. I think the biggest set back with current multiplayer is how controls must be changed for P2 if you use custom keys or if P1 doesn't have a controller... it's fine if you play with the same friend, but if you want to play with strangers and have to ask them to change the keys for you, it's a big hassle

Good stuff, great being open about why things go the way they go, bigger companies should have this attitude too. Perhaps some sort of chat lobby would be a good addition for multiplayer, to find people easier to play with. I am not a netcode programmer, just a gameplay programmer, but wouldn't the online system work with one player acting as a server and another as a client, with the server running the physics and sending the results to the client? It obviously wouldn't be ideal and be easy to cheat in, but it wouldn't be that different from Parsec - one computer is "playing", the other is "watching". However, it might be more network intensive to send physics results than (laggy) video.

I haven't played the game yet, but one thing that bothers me from a seasoned fighting game player is the camera. I don't mind the gentle sway, but I do worry with how much it drifts from a 90° angle from the characters. It makes it difficult to judge spacing and options if you can't accurately measure the distance between your weapon and your opponent. Especially in a game like this where one good hit is a kill, I feel this could cause a lot of scrambles and whiffed attacks that would make players be mad at the game rather than getting outplayed. I hope that gets changed, but either way, this game looks super cool, and I hope it has a long and dare I say competitive future. There's so much potential to this game, and I'd hate to see it get ignored.

Maneuvering AI (Or even Aggressive AI) Alexander is ridiculously OP, that upward backhand slash is just disgusting. Alexander can turn on a dime and is always faster than you with that upward backhand slash. I tested the rest of the characters with the 3 different AIs and the fights were winnable.

So one thing I've noticed is that it's hard to adjust the sensitivity of keyboard inputs. This isn't too bad, but what is problematic is that it doesn't show the move lists in terms of whatever controls you set--at least keyboard-wise. So I have a very hard time figuring out what Laszlo's combos actually are, or how to use them (he's practically the only one I use). I get that it's meant to be played with a console, but it would help those of us without such, if we could see the key bindings are they relate in practice.

A game that just requires someone to do the netcode? A dream for me, I love doing netcode! But I'm sure you already found someone by now.
