I’m a United 787 pilot. Just landed in Tokyo last night, Dec 14, 2023. Flight 881 from Chicago. Your trip was very interesting to me! I would love to take that train ride someday on my layover. We leave tomorrow and fly to Los Angeles and layover, then back to Tokyo, layover then back home to Chicago. Cheers and Merry Christmas!

The drivers must be highly skilled to drive the Shinkansen. Are you going to show videos during the snowy winter in Japan? I really liked those a lot.

'highly skilled'? Why? Do they ever need to turn the steering wheel? So stupid.
@OverseerMoti

For one, you need to follow instructions and timetable by the second, requiring focus for the entire trip. While bullet trains have automatic controls, those automated functions are mostly reserved for emergencies. Now, can you operate a train with pinpoint accuracy, departing and arriving at the designated stations by the exact second and centimeter without relying on autopilot? No? Then stamp the big stupid on your forehead, which should be done *before* commenting here.

I know his speed in the snow season is slower than usual because it is slippery and also less stable, not to mention that they only rely on hot water fountains that don't melt it enough, extreme temperatures

I believe this final leg of the high-speed line, from Hakodate to Sapporo, is still under construction, and is projected to open later this decade. So for now you can only take the Shinkansen north as far as Hakodate - about a 4-hour trip from Tokyo - but for now, you then have to take regular trains from Hakodate to Sapporo, which’d be another 4-hour trip.

The connected red train (E6 series Shinkansen) branches off towards Akita at a station along the way. It is possible to run trains for two destinations at the same time on the same schedule, and it also has the advantage of making it easy to change the number of train sets between peak and off-peak periods.
