Wow! What a great symphony: begins like Bruckner, and finishes like Sibelius. What a pity that the composer died so young :((

Very nice work, especially for someone who died before his 22nd birthday and didn't start playing the piano till he was ten. Thanks!

Wonderful symphony and also this composer had a great potential in great success had he not died tragically very young... aside from that thank you for uploading this.

My God another unsung genius passed away so young.... Someone cited Hamerik. Agree although I find this symphony more "Nordic" than Hamerik ones that sounds more gentle even while dark. Here I feel like more energy although more gloomy and desperate sometimes. I distinctly hear Bruckner legacy even more than Sibelius. Great piece for a teenager. Mature as he were at least twice as old.

What a hugely promising composer: naïve at times, a bit awkward now and again, more concerned with the moment than anything long-term, easily influenced and very passionate - in other words just like any other 20 year old touched by genius. Sadly at 40+ minutes I can't see any foreign orchestras taking this up but it's well worth hearing. It's indeed tragic he died so young.

Stupenda sinfonia. La forza e la freschezza giovanile... Storicamente più importante di Sibelius.Lui però ha vissuto quasi 100 anni e si è preso la reputazione. Il destino come può essere crudele.

I find it very interesting and cool, that the ending theme of the finale movement is Wie Schoen Leuchtet, the Lutheran hymn by Philip Nicolai in the late 1500's. It starts around 33:43.

The painting shows a scene from the national epic "Kalevala". Lemminkäinen was killed by the cowherd of Pohjola while trying to hunt the swan of Tuonela (the Land of the Dead) seen in the background. The cowherd chopped up the body and threw the pieces in the River of Tuonela. Lemminkäinen's mother fished out the pieces with a bronze rake and sewed them back together. In the painting she is waiting for the bee (above her) to bring her honey with which to bring her son back to life.
