The hub had seen better days, Meaning it was already very worn despite the break. It was a pretty rough fix however not knowing your location or circumstances you are a good bush mechanic as we say in Australia. There are times that certainly call for this sort of repair. No disrespect intended as I thought you did well with the tools you had available. Your fix may hold up well but the fact the aluminium failed previously ,I wouldn't be riding too fast on that old hub. Well done.

Probably had loose spokes, not the hub's fault :-) but yeah.

A master craftsman, in this case, a master at brazing highly reactive metals and a master artistic eye certainly makes such projects look easy (especially when speeded up many times). The real proof is how well this high stress part would hold up under the stress of actual use. I greatly suspect that it would not hold up at all and all that effort, materials and skill would be wasted. I certainly would not trust my life to such a repair nor would I risk the lives and safety of my customers. If something like this came into our shop, I wouldn't even attempt it, but would try to obtain a factory made replacement. Still, it is very entertaining watching a master do something so difficult.

Wow like a sculptor. Getting the part hot enough without distortion or unintended melting = not easy/ Dabbing the rod in the intended place each time = not easy. Reshaping the added aluminium to match the casting with a flipping grinder(!) = not easy. Very well done mate!
@michaelallen14323 ай бұрын
It's easy to get the right temp. Turn the oxygen down until you get a lot of soot and blacken the part with it. Then adjust to a neutral flame and heat until the soot disappears. Or just use a non contact thermometer. And use a proper aluminum flux. Without flux you get a porous low quality weld. Heat a spot and dab at it with the rod. When it's molten, just go.

I don't understand why you flick a 6013 steel rod over the molten aluminum. Are you removing slag or impurities? Were you using oxi-acetylene or oxi-propane? When you laid out the holes, measuring from the outer edge of the first hole on the right and then used that to mark the centers of the holes to be drilled it resulted in the last hole on the left being too close to the next existing hole. Interesting technique otherwise. I admire your work given you just use hand tools and that 4" grinder.

@@stormytempest6521so go to scrap yard, find a similar aluminium, sketch a shape, cut it out, match it to the mossing chunk Hope it Tig welds nicely (most cast aluminium will make you angry) and then file it down Nah this method is soumd for not crucial components like pulleys that just hold belts but wouldnt last on a crank case (it probably would for a good while If you prepped it right)
