I saw Eyes Without a Face on the big screen back in 1961. It was titled The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustas for the American release. I was 8 years old at the time and it made an impression on me for sure. A few years ago, I got the DVD release and was pleased to see that it was the uncensored version. The disc also included that 1949 short on the slaughterhouse of Paris. I'm glad it wasn't shot in color!

The slaughterhouse doco is good but not for everyone.

I didn't know Umbrella was doing this special version of Eyes Without a Face. They have my money now. Can't wait.

100% worth it, Ed. It's a great edition.

Lovely and unexpected to find a video from you on a Friday morning. Thank you. My partner & I are in a state of shock & grief after our beloved retired greyhound Sansa passed away yesterday. Nice to be distracted for a bit Terry. 😥

I stuffed up and released it a day early. So sorry for your loss. Pets are family. Both of you take care.

"Les Yeux sans visage", such a great film.

It's incredible and so far ahead of its genre that it became a template for others.

Thanks for the nice words! Was a lot of fun working on that Full Moon set.

My pleasure, John. That Full Moon set LOOKS good and the movies themselves are such nostalgic fun.

Amazing haul. I never thought anyone would top the Criterion release of Eyes Without a Face that sits on my shelf. I may have to upgrade that
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
It's worth it. I already had the BFI edition but the upgrade is an incredible collectors' edition.

I was just reading up on why Billy Idol wrote a song called "Eyes Without A Face." The Wikipedia article says he was a big fan of horror movies including the 1960 movie. His lyrics were mostly about his tumultuous lifestyle in 1980's New York City. His girlfriend sang "Les Yeux Sans Visage" for the chorus. I'll check out the 2013 Criterion Collection Blu-Ray from my local library after I watch the Blu-Ray of "A Bridge Too Far" which Terry discussed last week. Thanks!
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
A Bridge Too Far and Les Yeux Sans Visage are both great, rewatchable movies, but probably not as a double feature.

I loved "Dollman." Tim Thomerson was born to play that role. I also loved him Buck Henry's Star Trek parody "Quark." His Gene/Jean character cracks me up every time.

He was incredibly versatile and underrated.

I have the BFI edition of Eyes without a Face. I first saw on SBS, amazing film.

I have that edition, too. Might have to gift it to someone.

Nice random Wilhelm Scream. Glad the white box is back at the end. I've only seen Eyes Without A face of these, excellent film. I think I've seen that slaughter house film too, maybe on the copy of EWAF I rented. Just watched Maxxxine yesterday. Robert Eggers' Nosferatu opens on Christmas day here, looking for ward to that.
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
I'll be checking out Nosferatu when it shows up hear. I think it's on New Year's Day.

Another great one, I'm going to watch Time Crimes . Don't think there's a Full Moon I haven't seen. Have you seen Mary Warnoff in the New Women?

Albert Pyun, who directed Dollman, is a fascinating director, I think - a kind of auteur, within the limits of D-grade genre hack-dom, certainly a director with his own style, who always brought something more to the table than was required, even in pretty awful films - a sort of Hawaiian Russell Mulcahy...
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
I prefer Albert to Russell when it comes to directing, TBH.

You would think, given how Blu-Ray is now a collector's format rather than a mainstream one, that they'd stop region-locking the discs. Especially since the collector's market knows how and where to purchase All-Region Blu-Ray players. There's just no real point to it any more-it's like the distributors (or the studios they license the rights from) are cutting off their noses to spite their faces.
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
It's often not up to the production company for the disks. Often the studios limit the rights to multiregion them. It can get complex, especially when you're dealing with Hollywood suits.
@nealepaterson3496Ай бұрын
Agreed, I was thinking the same thing. It's one of the main reasons I lost faith in physical media. I wonder if Umbrella is just pretending, as Terry cautiously suggests? I remember, years ago, using an online code to region unlock a DVD player, and a popup appeared on the screen saying 'Congratulations!' I guess the hardware manufacturers hated the idea as well...
@timeliebeАй бұрын
@@terrytalksmovies - yeah, that's who I meant, or partly who I meant. Somebody is saying "You must region lock these", and I'm like, why? The only thing you did was make me spend an extra $150 for a region-free Blu-ray player...on Amazon, so it's not as if I had to skulk around the "Dark Web" and meet some guy in the dark alley to get it! I could buy… Three or five Blu-Rays for what these people made me play for the player. Whoever is still putting these limitations on is leaving money on the table, is all I'm saying....

Yeah ... _Eyes Without a Face_ is the _ne plus ultra_ (or GOAT, as the kids say) of art combined with horror. So beautiful and so horrible. I feel like a lot of the credit for the movie should go to whoever sculpted Christiane's mask. It is incredibly haunting.
@terrytalksmoviesАй бұрын
The simplicity of the mask is definitely a winner. Franju is so underrated as a seminal horror director. Being able to put beauty into a movie like this is genius.

Yeah, the surgery scene in Eyes Without a Face freaked me out when I first saw it on SBS in the mid-90s... then years later I got the Criterion DVD and well HOLY JESUS THE SBS PRINT FADED OUT THE SURGERY SCENE EARLY BUT THE CRITERION PRINT GOES FOR THE FULL FACE PEEL HOW THE FUCK DID THIS HAPPEN IN A MOVIE FROM 1960 WHERE IS MY GOD NOW I'M A TEAPOT etc. It's still pretty bracing after decades of much more explicitly gory films.

It's a groundbreaking movie. I'm so glad Umbrella did it justice with a 4K release and I'm incredibly lucky to have it.
