Hi. Thumbs up for Strange Darling and Willa Fitzgerald in particular 👍. The film features in my favourite 24 of ‘24. Revenge would have featured in my favourite 17 of ‘17. I watched 8 Masumura films this year including the groovy Giants & Toys. All of the films are good and some are masterpieces. One of these eight was even my film watch of the year. Chef’s kiss! 😀

The Substance. Top of everything this year. Runner up was I saw the Devil. That goes for any genre too

I once asked a mate what Darling was all about. The reply was "What to do while waiting for the kettle to boil"

It's much more than that. In some ways it's very prescient.

Check out any of Masumura’s mid-period films. They’re all good and some are masterpieces 👍. The films with Ayako Wakao or any with Wife in the title are especially good.

My list says I’ve watched 199 movies and miniseries so far in 2024 but only 50 were released in 2024. To me, a miniseries of 6-10 hours is like a long movie to cover in a long weekend. For instance, Shogun (2024).
@terrytalksmovies2 күн бұрын
Yep. That's why I don't do many series these days. They're attention-sponges and I need to keep my time for movies and video-creation. 😀
@RamZar502 күн бұрын
@ I understand. However, a miniseries is like a long movie. For instance, that Indian sci-fi movie “Kalki 2898-AD” is 3 hours long and the eminently rewatchable “Pride and Prejudice” (1995) miniseries is 5 hours long (less once you cut out the credits and recaps).

Hey Terry. Did you happen to see MaXXXine in 2024? Did you think Ti West stuck the landing of the most recent modern horror trilogy? MaXXXine was more hit than miss for me.

Maxxxine was good but the ones I mentioned were better for me.

My son and dil had heard of the tv glow movie, but they haven't watched it yet. They are going to watch it when Jordan gets home, he's house sitting atm. So thanks for the rec, and thanks for dealing with those transphobic cvnts. Medical racism when it comes to Indigenous healthcare is nasty. I've had my fair share. (a psych once kept asking me if I was addicted to alcohol or meth and didn't stop asking until I yelled at him) But my sister doesn't look white like I do. She was sent home from the emergency department with a couple of panadol without seeing a doctor. 2 days later, I finally convinced her to go to a different hospital. She had meningitis. Another Blackfella friend was diagnosed with alcoholism when she doesn't even drink. She saw another doctor who correctly diagnosed her with chrohns.
@terrytalksmovies2 күн бұрын
Absolutely. The Moogai addresses that kind of racist in a really salient way, too. It hits so many of the trauma points of first nations Australians within the context of a brilliant horror movie, too.
@angelawossname2 күн бұрын
@terrytalksmovies I might watch it, I would need to be in a decent head space for that, I think. I still haven't dealt with most of my medical trauma. If I hadn't been misdiagnosed so many times by so many people my mobility would be significantly better, I probably wouldn't have auto immune disease and I wouldn't be going blind. It's ridiculous that my story is better than those of us that don't pass as white. It didn't end well for my sister. People who have had severe meningitis are high risk for getting MS. If the first hospital had allowed her to see a doctor she might have been diagnosed before it got severe. She has MS. I get really pissed off with gunya cvnts who think that it's good that Blackfellas were colonised since we get education and health care now. Jfc.

I don't think I'd consider Poor Things horror, more Fellini-esque fantasy with lots of naughtiness. Yes, there's Bride of Frankenstein in the plot but mostly not horror. Saw Heretic and keep seeing bits of Trap on HBO. I liked Revenge but the pedantic side of me would prefer the leading lady to say something like "my dad is an outdoorsman and taught me everything about survival," instead of party girl goes Rambo over night. I saw The Apprentice and agree with you on that. Saw Made in England on TCM, loved it. Happy to see clips from P & P films I haven't seen yet. Want t see all these with one exception.

In Revenge, there's a magic realism aspect where SOMETHING in that desert cave empowers her. I like that.

A Christmas movie, if you have not seen it, is "Rare Exports". Ot is a Scandinavian film about the original Santa. Not what you expect.

Seen it. Got it on blu-ray. It's a fun flick.
@palmercolson70372 күн бұрын
Several movies that I plan to see, one way or another. I can find Late Night with the Devil (missed it in theaters), Heretic when it steams, and could need to buy the blu-ray for the Apprentice because no site here would probably dare to to stream it after 1/20. If I hadd the other interesting movies, my list of movies to see may reach number line proportions (i.e. 1 to infinity).

I didn't know I Saw the TV Glow was about a trans character, I guess I missed your first vid on it. Knowing that I want to go back and give it a watch, I skipped the movie initially because I kept reading about Buffy being the cultural 90s touchstone and inspiration for it and that sent me running away. I'm back in and may have to sit down with my uncle Nick and watch it

- Poor Things is a fabulous movie with great cinematography, acting and production design. In the last 30 minutes it fizzled out. - The Apprentice covers well the relationship between Trump and lawyer Cohn. - The Substance is another unique and wonderful movie but fizzled out in the last half an hour.
@terrytalksmovies2 күн бұрын
The Substance, for me at least, ramped up to Troma levels of surreality in the last half hour.
@RamZar502 күн бұрын
@ Ramped up the grotesqueness in the last half hour. Body horror was fine but it became Frankensteinish.
