The Subs vs Dubs debate is eternal! Just skimmed the comments of 20 other reactions both subtitled & dubbed, and in the comments everyone is asking for the opposite of what the reactor did regardless. 😂 Damned if you do, damned if you don't it seems.

Would it be possible to watch with subs in the future and then synch with the dubbed audio for the edit?
@JayBondReacts
@JayBondReacts Жыл бұрын
@@LordVolkov Possible, probably, but then I'll catch flack from the other side "can't believe you missed ___" because I'm reading subtitles. I was super happy about this reaction but the few comments about sub vs dub is already making me question doing any other foreign films in general so it's probably a non issue.

I don't think this is a movie you only watch once so you can try the sub version in the future. I prefer subtitles to see the original performance but it makes sense that we can hear what you're reacting to as well. This is a great movie either way.

@@Ahairinthegate Agreed! I highly recommend giving it a rewatch with the original dialogue. Stephen Chow's comedic inflection is hilarious and the dub doesn't quite catch it.

Yea the subtitles dialogue is just way different than the English Dubbed version. it would have been cool if they just dubbed word for word rather than change it a whole lot

I'm normally not a dub guy, but I really like this dub. Yeah, they are taking some liberties here and there, and they are definitely hamming up the performances in a way that may be questionable, but it makes the movie even funnier. For the genre of this film, I feel like that's appropriate.

Yes! Totally agree. Despite not watching with subs, this is very likely a movie I'd want to watch dubbed anyway just because it's intentionally funny. Anything kinda serious I tend to watch subtitled. Though, I didn't expect the romance angle here. 😂

@lesgoubrandon5010damn I know exactly what you mean bro it’s the same sometimes with Mexican dub stuff, a lot of the humor is lost in translation making it less funnier when it’s actually hilarious.

Supercop, is one of my favorite Chan films. He gets along so well with Michelle Yeoh. He is probably my go-to for recommending Kung-fu movies, but since you've seen most of his stuff, there's probably no point in that. Kung Fu Hustle is definitely my favorite Kung Fu movie. Unlike Kung Pow, it is a fully integrated presentation from start to finish, whereas Kung Pow is somewhat a cross between this film, and America's Funniest Home Videos, since it relies a lot on creative dubbing. It's an amazing technical presentation, but KFH has a much stronger story, since it's not a merging of other films. So... now you know. You've seen The Film. You may have vowed not to cry for KFH, but I think it will get you one day, when you rewatch it. ;) Like Planes-Trains, it hits you with an unexpected emotional punch at the end. One interesting thing I've noticed, is that the dubs on KFH seem to evolve. They seem to update them - now and then, to seem more natural. They are still changed from the subtitle dialogue, but I think they do a good job of conveying the mood of what they are saying. One downside of the subs, though, is that there are a few times, when the dialogue changes to English, as a joke, and you can't convey that, with subtitles. The next one I'd recommend, is Shaolin Soccer. It's a different style. Instead of being a mythical tale, it's more of a traditional sports movie, with a bit of Chow's Kung Fu magic sprinkled in. It's hilarious, as well. If you like subtitled films, there are a LOT of early Chow films that are rather good. Most of them are comedies. I recommend one called "All for the Winner" aka. God of Gamblers. It's not to be confused with another "God of Gamblers" that stars Chow Yun-Fat. It is a comedy-action film, that is technically spun off from the other film. If you can't find it, you can find examples of it on KZbin. There are two other sequels, with part 3 being the wackiest. If you get to that one, expect a lot of laughs. They're 90's films, so they won't have the same production values.

This is yet another cinematic Kung Fu love letter from Hong Kong writer and director Stephen Chow. Love this filmmaker. This movie isn't only an action movie, but a comedy and has an effective romantic subplot. The ever growing power escalation depicted, is very similar to what you'll see in Japanese Shounen magna/anime. The comedy is very cartoonish, yet not childish. The romance is effective and touching. Fun Fact: In the opening scene, some kids are playing soccer. Then Stephen Chow steps in and stomps the ball. This is a nod to Stephen Chow's earlier film, Shaolin Soccer (2001). More Juilliard Alumni Fact: In the opening scenes the Axe Gang can be seen doing a dance number reminiscent of West Side Story (1961), a musical in which two gangs fight for power over their territory. Bruce Lee Tribute Fact: When the Landlady is seated between the Boss and his assistant, she faces the boss, and mimics the gestures Bruce Lee used while also facing a crime boss in Return of the Dragon. She wags her finger at him, then closes both fists, then just the right (while knuckles cracking can be heard), she jerks her head up, and the boss nods he understands, then she thumbs her nose, exactly like Bruce Lee.

This film is definitely both a love letter and a satire of cinema, eastern and western. The tailor spouting Uncle Ben's line as his last breath. The Shining reference. Bruce Lee movement and Jackie Chan & Jet Li dress style callbacks. The animal schools of kung fu. The cartoonish segments and the 2004 era CGI works since it's a stylized action film and the physics aren't supposed to be real world, and really sets up the final battle. Everytime I watch this, I get surprised by how over the top it is at the start. Then it gets keep notching the action up til the end. Reminds me of Fury Road in that regard. Definitely top tier kung film. if not one of. The "Coolie" term is very contextual since its a manual labor description from the colonial era, so no one will realisitically call anyone that now because that's not an actual job that people have anymore. For a movie set in 1920s Hong Kong, it will fit tho. BTW, I enjoy parts of Kung Pow, mostly the hilarious dubbing, but yeah the cow matrix fight is probably the right time to stop watching. Just imagine aliens appear or something then the film ends.

Stephen Chow is amazing! If you couldn't already tell, the man is a huge fan of Looney Tunes, his ability to essentially make a live action cartoon, is second to none. If you ever give Kung Pow another chance, might help to watch the making of, as it is a really unique method of making a movie, redubbing and splicing yourself and new scenes into an old Kung Fu movie. I also admit you have to be in the right kind of mood to really enjoy it, and a little herb doesn't hurt either lol! Because it is, such a stupid, silly, madhouse, insane fever dream of a film. Save the watch for when you're in the mood to watch something like Airplane or Hot Shots. If you haven't already seen them, Jackie Chan has some great martial arts comedies like, Drunken Master, Legend of Drunken Master, Police Story and of course Rush Hour, though I'm guessing you've already seen that. 3 non comedy based, martial arts films to watch, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of the Flying Daggers and Hero, are absolutely amazing, with incredible cinematography and spectacular stunt/wire work.

It's funny because I'm not normally a fan of martial art type movies. However I just watched this by chance back in the day and I loved it. I'm sure that some of it was wasted on me but I found it to be a really enjoyable film and I liked the story. I understand why you opted to watch it dubbed but the first time I watched it was with subtitles. I then watched it a while later dubbed and it didn't connect with me as much. Another good reaction from a very enjoyable film. From what I remember about Kung pow movie is that it was filmed entirely in green screen where they just super imposed the actors head on to a pre-existing movie that had been filmed like 27 years earlier or something and they just changed a few things to give it a different story slightly. It was slightly original in that sense (even though power rangers had been doing it for years already) but other than that I agree the film was pants in comparison to Kung Fu hustle.

Great reaction Jay. Personally, I'm glad you watched the dubbed version as I feel the jokes deliver better than the subbed. Stephen Chow is such a hidden gem and I wish others would branch out of only knowing this and (lesser known) Shaolin Soccer. These two were up there because of their US releases (video not theatrical, I think). He perfectly meshes cartoon and real life seamlessly. Whenever I watch a reactor do his movies, some seem to be almost put off by the lunacy thinking it to be childish or unprofessional. They, of course, were only reacting to it because of popularity of views from other reactors so they better get on the bandwagon. They skip Shaolin Soccer because, of the two, this was a little more "modern" with the cinematography and style. You have been one of two reactors to pick up on the poster in the background resembling the way he was holding the girl, during the stick-up. My favorite scene from this movie is the knife throwing debacle. Unfortunately, I can't crack up, like I used to, watching this comedy masterpiece, anymore, but I get a kick out of reactors reactions to it for the first time. As for Super Cop 2, I'd recommend watching it. My favorite JC movie is "Who am I" mostly for the rooftop fight and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IV chase scene. Sorry for the length. Keep up the gems and can't wait for the next ones.

Stephen Chow created sarcastic slang (Chinese culture) dialogues in Cantonese first. #1. Cantonese dialogue version.(Best) #2. Mandarin dialogue version. #3. #1 or #2 with English subtitle version. #4. English dialogue version. All four versions have slightly different expressing the jokes. Even English dialogue(#4) may not exactly the same to English subtitle(#3). To enjoy the fullness, pick the one that you understand the dialogue (intonation) &/or the culture. English dialogue (#4) version is the best for this Channel(Jay Bond).

sub vs dub needs no debate. dub is convenient. sub is original voice + original intention (since you hear directly from the character). if you want convenience, you just choose dub. and most people who choose dub prefers to hear english than to read subtitles, so its just convenience for them. but dub will always, always has something lost in translation. you will never get from dub the best that came from the original. Especially the jokes. Changes in the sound effects or voice also changes the intention. And Kung Fu Hustle is one that has the dialogue lines change in dub, different words are used in the dub than the original subtitles. all the sound effects are changed as well. it is just not the same, or worse. If you are watching the rest of stephen chow movies, then you will miss out on his and his team of actors and actresses' voices, whom they followed him in his movies. Your dub will hence have different Voice Actors in each movie. a great detour from the original. remember that this movie is Directed, Produced, Written, Acted as main character, by the legendary Stephen Chow himself. as also noticed by you 36:37 If you don't hear from him directly, it is a huge loss really.

It's not dumb biggest some dubs are terrible, for instance the Squid Game dub.

Hahaha There's no way! But, I'm willing to give it another shot at some point to see if my mind has changed on it.

good reaction, but again..... the dubbed version is just TRASH AF... PLZ dont do that ever again, for the sake of your watching experience, you have no idea how much of a difference it can make with the original tones and expressions... if you know how important voice means in a story, just imagine watching onepiece with pure ENGLISH VA.... too bad I just cant help it

Awww... Why did you have to absolutely ruin this reaction with the TERRIBLE dub?! 😭

Because a reaction of this with subs would be nearly impossible to follow.

What are you talking about? You're a cinemaphile too, why would even condone dubs? Movies should be watched in the intended language.

Easy on the gatekeeping. I did what I did and I loved the movie. Not sure why this is so triggering. If I didn't like the movie because of the dub, sure, I get it. But that's not the case.
