It is actually true that Oogway betrayed Kai. They were warlords together, and all that Kai did to earn the names Beast of Vengeance and Maker of Widows, Oogway was there beside him. When Kai wanted to conquer the pandas, he expected Oogway to join him like usual. It was Oogway that changed, not Kai.

I love Kai’s and Oogway’s relationship. Oogway saw light through the pandas, Kai was focused on protecting the ones who he loved personally, like Oogway. I think it also makes sense that he still loves Oogway, seeing how he restricts himself from using his amulet as a warrior. To be fair, we can understand that he felt betrayed by Oogway, even when it is ironic, since he was the one who wanted to protect him in his own messed up way. This makes him a foil to Po. Both wanted to protect their family and got betrayed as a result but Kai seeks revenge, Po seeks reconnection to master chi. Brilliant.

Nice reading, however there may be another reason why Kai doesn't use Oogway's warrior, and that may be because he needs Oogway's Chi with himself to be anchored to the mortal realm. That's what he said when he defeated Oogway. There is also a theory that it was Oogway himself who created the spirit world, as well as Kung Fu.

Kai needed Oogway's chi because a huge amount is needed for him to teleport to the mortal world. If I'm not wrong Paws of Destiny makes this clear when it is said that it takes a lot of power to find a way out of the Spirit Realm because of its nature as a place of great power. Granted, the canonicity of the TV shows is dubious at best, but at least that is supported by a lot of Isaac Carlson's points

I actually would say that the three movies do have a deep meaning. Fundamentally, they're about self-actualization. The first one is about physical self-mastery, the second one is about mental self-mastery, and the third is about spiritual self-mastery. We're there along for the ride on Po's growth journey, and it really is just a beautiful thing.

Kung fu panda trilogy has always been my favourites as a kid, and I can relate to it so much because I had depression as a kid and I thought no one would like me/ love , and so watching how po continue to grow not just a panda but as a warrior and son made me realize that” you don’t have to worry what others think of you , just love yourself and be proud of who you are .

These are very lighthearted and enjoyable movies. Though I wish that people would stop apologizing for getting emotional from watching movies. I don't see anything wrong from tearing up, crying, or weeping endlessly when witnessing the emotional beats of recorded media. That's what it is there for. To provoke an emotional response. So let it all out, I say.

I thought the same thing, but then I heard a theory that I agree would make me want to see another one, which is giving a redemption arc for Tai Lung. By now we know that he got sent to the spirit realm at the end of the first movie, and that it is possible to return to the mortal world. Of all the major villains we've had, I'd argue he's the only one where a good time-out in the spirit realm to reflect on his actions/motives might just be exactly what he needed.

@@zeph0shade Tai Lung was really what I'd call a Rival for Poe, they were basically chosen and trained for the same goal, they both loved drama and the myths of kung fu, they weren't all that different in the end. One was treated as the chosen one, the other forced to struggle for everything. His redemption would be interesting , especially if Poe finally had a little darkness to his character.

There's an interview from 2010 where it was stated that 4-6 were planned as a master trilogy, since 1-3 is basically a student trilogy for Po. You can find the link to the article on Wikipedia.

Oogway didn't go back because the universe didn't need him back. Oogway is a taoist, it reflects in his character, going with the flow, accepting things as they are without judging them as good or bad and not imposing his will over them.

One of the theories I love the most is the idea that oogway wasn't such a good person in the past. Kai felt like he was betrayed because they were warlords and taking what they wanted was the norm. But when oogway was healed, he was also taught the value of life. He didn't want to be who he was before, so he tried to stop kai, ultimately killing him in the end. I doubt they will, but it would be such a good plot line for the fourth movie. The village that po and the others live in is pretty peaceful, thanks to oogway training warriors there. But what if there were villages that never recovered from oogway and kai? Villages that were forced to rob and steal in order to live after oogway and kai stole their land and killed their leaders. It would lead to a pretty good antagonist and storyline about the different circumstances people find themselves in and how they got there.

I kinda hope that we get some spin-off or shorts that further expand the history of Oogway and Kai, so that Kai becomes a more developed and complex villain, and we see how Oogway transitioned from an evil warlord to a benevolent master

I didn't know they're making a new movie from this franchise, I hope they explore Tigress' past a little more. In these movies, they don't just explore Po's growth, but also Shifu's. In the first one he learns to adapt his teaching methods to the student, on the second they emphasize how he got inner peace, but his pride was still too much to learn to master chi. In this one he becomes humble enough to ask Po to teach him and accepts that he can also learn from Po. But Tigress only gives hints of having a difficult past, she hugs Po when she realizes the Peacock knows how his entire family was killed (at least he thought so) showing empathy like she has something in her past to relate, but every time she seemed ready to open, they were interrupted and I hope they show more of her and what seems to be her difficult past.

If you piece it out together. Oogway is a very bad guy back then with kai. He just got a change of heart when he met the pandas. They were conquerors. You dont just became brothers with someone who have a title of Master of Pain and Maker of Widows and just tolerates it. They are too close. It was even Kai that saves oogway when they got ambushed and carried him till they accidentally met the pandas. They probably killed many people together. So technically, oogway really betrayed kai when he became good.

even though its never said, i think only masters of chi go the spirit realm when they pass away. thats why we dont see cities of people in the spirit realm, just strong fighters. most simalr comparison is how uncle iroh from kora last avatar is in the spirit world or how only jedi masters are able to have force ghosts. just a theory tho.

The best part of these Kung Fu Panda movies, in my opinion, are the endings. Each Kung Fu Panda movie ends in a very conclusive way, but still manages to keep the door open for a sequel. Kung Fu Panda 3 was very conclusive, but I also thought that about Kung Fu Panda 2, and Kung Fu Panda 1 when they all first released. It's great, I don't really want another Kung Fu Panda, but they all stay consistent. So I am very excited to see what they do. Po has been elevated to a very high status, and I think it would interesting to see something that poses a challenge greater than before. Who knows what the conflict could be, it could be the rise of more muzzle loading firearms, that would be an extension of Shen's plan in the second Kung Fu Panda, but it would also be retreading ground with second movie. And they already tackled the spirit realm, so It's difficult to say what this could be about. Stakes have to be real though, I'm afraid one of The Furious Five or Master Shifu might pass and go to the spirit realm. Or perhaps Po will make a sacrifice that saves all of china, even though he technically did that in the third as well... Kung Fu Panda 1 & 2 are masterpieces, but Kung Fu Panda 3 is great in it’s own way😆🔥. JK Simmons did a really good job playing the antagonist “Kai” as I loved his blades and his theme music, but Shen is my favorite. It was great to see Po finally realize what it means to be a Panda and a Dragon Warrior. The new cast members were great such as Bryan Cranston, JK Simmons, Kate Hudson etc. It was a very different concept compared to other two movies as this one was very spiritual, and the battles were less Kung Fu related and evolved more around spiritual battles “Chi”. Loved your reaction/analysis, take care and have a good one❤️

17:20 actually, Kai is saying the truth. Oogway did betray him. Betrayal isnt an act performed always by bad people. Good people also can betray others, especially if the victim here had bad intentions. Both Kai and Oogway wete warlords. Conquest was their objective. But oogway saw the greater good in Mastering Chi and decided to Change. Since both of them were so close, Kai fully wanted his brother figure to side with him. Hence, the betrayal.
