I feel like chameleon is an example of a dark mirror villain. The dark villain is basically a version of one of the heroes in a story if their life went completely wrong, and they were selfish and greedy. So basically it’s when a villain has the same experiences as a hero but becomes more and more unhinged, instead of becoming more heroic🤷‍♀️

One thing I’m not sure anyone has talked about is the sheer poetic irony behind each of the villain’s defeats (prior to this one) Tai Lung dedicated his entire life towards obtaining the dragon scroll, but was defeated by Po when he rejected its true meaning Lord Shen wiped out every Panda to avoid his fate, but by doing so only sealed it by starting Po’s journey to find inner peace General Kai was obsessed with having all of the chi in the world, but was destroyed once he had more chi than he could handle The Chameleon just gets oneshot by Po’s staff when he remembers he isn’t a moron 💀

My personal idea for a better villain: New villain is a big black snake namens Tao. Po and the furious five are already old, with Po picking the new dragon warrior at the start of the movie. Tao is in the mean time deceiving the people or animals of the valley into believing that the jade temple is not doing enough to save its inhabitants. He funds his own fighting school with the intention of stripping the influence of the jade temple. We later learn that Tao‘s first love tragically died when the furious five alongside Po fought Shen‘s minions in the past, and considers her death Po‘s fault. As his fighting school gains in popularity, the furious five and the new dragon warrior investigate but are not allowed entrance into the new school, located in a forgotten but rediscovered area called the temple of eternal truth, where Tao has his lair. When messengers of the jade temple finally manage to infiltrate the temple of eternal truth, they are killed by Tao himself. Some of his students, who had fond memories of the messengers killed, tell the furious five about it and the call for action comes. The five, alongside the new dragon warrior, challenge Tao and his soldiers to a fight, which he parttakes in. Although many people were disgusted when the furious five mention the messengers killed by Tao, many still support him, but some support is still there. Tao manages to win the fight, and the furious five retreat to their temple as Tao claims the leading role in the valley. After this, his actions become more and more ruthless, people fear Tao more than they love him, and whilst the Dragon warrior and his five discuss their shameful defeat with Grandmaster Po, Tao rallies his soldiers to march on the Jade temple and dispose of his mortal enemy, Po. In the fight, the temple burns, and the furious (6) are in serious trouble when Po intervienes and helps to defeat the Snake with all the strength he has left. Po dies, after teaching the new dragon warrior one last lessons, and the jade palace returns to its former glory. Just came up with this lol

instead of the chameleon being bitter about her size, she could’ve been physically disabled. that sort of circumstance would make more sense as to why the chameleon was deterred from becoming a kung fu master, and her trauma and subsequent turn to sorcery would have more weight to it. she was never able to foster fighting skills on her own, but maybe she discovered she had a talent for sorcery. she learns that she can steal the kung fu of great masters with her unique abilities, realizes that through this she could finally be recognized as a powerful/worthy figure, which is the catalyst for how the movie begins. we could see her in the movie stripping power from those who cared for her, killing anyone who attempts to stop her from finally living up to her dream. when shes absorbed enough strength to become a kung fu master her ambitions grow larger and she wants now to be the most powerful warrior there is. she doesn’t have to be evil for the sake of evil, raising and training zhen to perfection could’ve been the chameleons way of recognizing herself in the fox and wanting to give her something that she wasn’t allowed at that age (her empathy would differentiate her from the other villains.) furthermore, i believe that SHE should have been the new dragon warrior. Zhen can still fill the same role throughout most of the film, and the audience is still led to believe that zhen will be the dragon warrior bc it just seems so obvious given how talented she is at kung fu, but if written well enough the chameleon being reformed could’ve been the perfect resolution that also leaves room for the two more movies that dreamworks wants to make out of this franchise. we wouldn’t expect it because every other villain of the last 3 films was evil through and through and even chose death over changing their ways. The chameleon could be a refreshing break in the kfp formula and mark for a change in the kfp universe. the chameleon has introduced an entirely new fighting system than the already established kung fu, a system that allows the physically disadvantaged an opportunity to cultivate an unconventional strength. chameleon as the next dragon warrior would enforce a change that would expand combat further than kung fu and open up opportunities for more aspiring warriors that they wouldn’t be afforded otherwise. Po just also shouldn’t be able to choose the next dragon warrior, bc he wasn’t chosen by any particular character. it was “destined” or the “universe,” which makes it all the more frustrating when shifu tells po to choose a successor. (Shifu out of all characters should recognize that it’s not rlly a choice lol.) so maybe po thinks that zhen should be his successor for a good portion of the movie, but he finds out he’s wrong when met with chameleon. anyways, chameleon wouldve been a lot more satisfying as an antagonist if she were even a little bit more fleshed out.

Why not let the fox character be the chameleon in disguise, betray Po. But feel sad in a way to the point on not understanding why because she was put down all her life an doesn't know genuine kindness. For her backstory, instead of multiple Kung fu masters rejecting her for her size, have it just be one master where she lived an once admired as an orphan. But be rejected because that master viewed short creatures as weak an kicked her out. Po then defeats her, but gives her a second chance after she serves her time in prison to learn kung fu an use it for good.

The worst thing is literally that the stakes are non-existing! if Po just TRIED a bit harder from the start, he would've killed the Chameleon with a single attack, he doesn't even need the effing staff! he is already at Oogway's level, he can just chill and win against the strongest enemies in the verse, Kung Fu Panda 4 was a NICE movie at best, and helped me wash away that god-awful Megamind and the crime syndicates or whatever, also Jack Black is always a bless to hear so that was nice too... somehow i didn't even HATED the aqua fina character wich is a first for me, i was able to bear with her despite the fact i did found her annoying and too predictable, and so yeah the fact the Chameleon is so weak EVEN with everything she absorbed is baffling, if Po just tried or decided to attack her seriously in her monster form, he would've won immediately, that's it, sorry for the long comment, great video.

The Chameleon was supposed to be the deadliest villain and even though we've seen her steal the kung fu abilities of Tai Lung, Lord Shen, General Kai, etc. and seeing her shape shift into them, it just wasn't convincing. The writers should have taken notes on how to make her a better baddie. They could have taken inspiration from Jack Horner and especially Death from Puss In Boots 2: The Last Wish. She could have been so much more disturbing and terrifying than what we got from Chameleon. Hopefully if there's ever a Kung Fu Panda 5, I hope they'll either allow The Chameleon to return and make some major improvements to her character arc and developments or better yet, create an entirely new and original villain who's on the same level of frightening as Death and Pitch Black as well as the same level of being physically imposing as Tai Lung, Shen and Kai. They dropped the ball with The Chameleon.

I think it would have been better if she was once a good person, like one of the older members of the “furious five” that Shifu could have been a part of and her skill was to go undercover and pretend to be villains to get intell but then she lost her identity and constantly changes her form because she doesn’t remember who or what she was and have it be that Po is also having an identity crisis because he now has a perfect life, he discovered who he was, has inner peace, found his lost family, but he doesn’t feel quite right and have the Chameleon use that against him with her motive of forcing people to be like her and causing mass panic and at the end of it Po giving some speech and while she is defeated she remembers who she is and starts a journey of self discovery. If Po is supposed to pass down the title he could then do so feeling comfortable with everything.

Honestly, her appearing in the bar feels like it could've really worked under a different direction. Imagine if the stakes are, instead, that she was tormenting this town and they needed saving. Then there's this bar scene where they are worrying about this criminal overlord, one of them acting normal. Then, that person leaves and, partway through their exit, reverts to their chameleon form. Now suddenly the crew is left realizing the person they bad mouthed was not only able to blend in among them, but had enough knowledge to resemble one of their friends visually and socially. Of course, in this case she'd have to go from a martial artist to an assassin type of character, but I still feel like this could've helped her stand out from what the movie originally did

She was feared and serious and it was because nobody believed when she was fear and threat and it showed in the flashback sequence and the MAIN "PROBLEM" with the film is that she's not in it enough and I want to have #DreamWorks #UniversalStudios #KungFuPanda #extendedcut #KungFuPanda3 #KungFuPanda4 an extended cut to show her more and give her more fight scenes! She's a more threatening villain and is treated with more direct seriousness than Kai in the third and her plan is even somewhat the same as Kai except it's ressurection of dead souls instead of possession of jade bodies and the final fight with the exception in 3 with Kai vs Po is more serious and not funny and it's more awesome and violent and hits more about Pos emotional journey in it too. Give her another chance guys. Rewatch the movie n You'll see it!

They could've easily fixed Chameleon as a villain if they just utilized the hypocrisy of Mantis, Viper, and Shifu being masters or even just say she wasn't good at Kung Fu and resorted to Sorcery to be of use in any way only to be called a cheater and rejected or something. Hell, they could even pull from LOA and reference Master Mugen a whole ahh Goldfish becoming a master and not her. Oh yeah and give Chameleon more diabolical actions instead pushing someone down the stairs (Shifu pretty much did that to Po in the first movie).

Here is my thought of how she could have been made better: Her backstory: She would have been an orphan who have lost her parents during a war she tried to become a kung fu master and after getting rejected she started studying dark magic and dark ways and after becoming powerful as an adult she tried to become a dark kung fu master it led to her getting banished for studying dark magic and swore revenge that she would try to take over the world as a new kung fu master leader of the world. actually in can be better story about redemption and finding true potential if at the end Po made Chameleon the dragon warrior. She rob bandits, Zhen rob normal people. Zhen traitoring Po then traitoring Chameleon. Chameleon kill less people that Po or Zhen that kill many soldiers by throwing them off the cliff. Chameleon do everything to become better at kung-fu, unlike Zhen. Also Po showing all cinema that he give second chance to everyone, so ending look strange where he decide to kill already defeated Chameleon, when she begging them for mercy. And if they didn't kill her it look even more strange to send her to spirit plane, because she literally can one-shot spirits and steal their powers.
