In 1900, Teddy Roosevelt wanted to be the VP candidate, but McKinley's first term VP, Garret Hobart, refused to step aside, but then died in Nov. 1899, age 55. TR and McKinley were elected to office November, 1900. McKinley was assassinated September 6, 1901. TR became president. McKinley's campaign manager, Sen. Mark Hanna, wanted to challenge TR in GOP presidential primary in 1904. Hanna died February 1904. TR won reelection November, 1904.

I thought TR didn't want to be Vice President, because the Office of Vice President was considered the pathway to oblivion. The Vice Presidency became vacant in 1899 and was thus available. The Office of Governor of New York seemed more like a stepping stone to the Presidency. TR's opponents were able to convince the Delegates of The Republican Convention to draft Roosevelt. Mark Hanna opposed the idea, saying that TR would only be a heartbeat from the Presidency.

I have read TR's correspondence, which was chronicled in a book. He spoke more than once about the utter uselessness of the Vice Presidency, and strongly detested in before he was ever considered for the role. Incidentally, I do not recall the exact reason why he ultimately accepted the nomination, but he saw it as his descent into obscurity, courtesy of boss Platt.

More disturbing in the context of the foreign affair focus is its omission of his interventions in Latin America throughout his tenure, especially since the writers go out of the way to frame him as so peace-loving. Maybe they thought actually bothering to discuss the Philippine-American War with McKinley was enough anti-imperialist criticism for them.

No one is all good or all bad and every one of us citizens and permanent residents has their own background, family history, religious inclination and ethnic identity which also feeds into our choices in leaders. Even the recently-maligned Woodrow Wilson contributed to the US in some positive ways.

17:36 talk about success going to your head. And before this trying to take control of the Philippines... it is up to the people of the Philippines themselves who their leader? I hadn't realised that another American President had been assassinated, and yet another before this had been also? And this programme also says, if Vietnam War ended the same as Philippine War, but then doesn't tell us who the Philippine's War ended? That's not saying their is a need for intervention often, and we don't often enough now... but ultimately the people of country have to decide their own future.

A well balanced take on some of the better presidents of our nation who came slightly short of actual greatness. Each has a minor or major character flaw or two, but they are reflective of their times. Mind you, I'm being diplomatically polite about what THE SHRUB managed to accomplish, but like McKinley and Wilson, his presidency is transitional. Wilson paves the way for FDR, Bill McKinley chooses Teddy Roosevelt to run with him, TR then paves the way for the 20th Century to come into being in full. James Monroe was preceded by presidents he respected and/or admired, who did significant things, he is followed by John Quincy Adams.

Spain declared war on us first, in fact. McKinley has rarely been credited for the real achievement of his Presidency. By enlisting the help of former Confeds in the war, he helped to heal a yet-divided nation 33 years after the cessation of hostilities against the States in rebellion. McKinley, therefor, gets top billing in underappreciated Presidents for my view.

I wish people would STOP calling Roosevelt a war hero, he didn't do anything he told the people back home. He didn't charge up san Juan hill on a horse that's a dam lie. He was lucky he and his so called rough riders made it home alive. They were pinned down under heavy gun fire and was taking a lot of casualties. The colored troops and some other white troopers saved their butts. When he first got back home he said the colored troops did good, but when he decided to run for office he said the colored troops weren't any good. I have no respect for Wilson or Roosevelt.

@@ricardocantoral7672 you don't know what you're talking about, Roosevelt did NOT charge up no dam san Juan hill. You no nothing about history, I mean the facts not some damn lies. White people like to lie and change facts to support bullshit. You need a real history lesson, Roosevelt did shit in Cuba worth talking about. And yes he did down play the role of the black soldiers, they saved him and his so called rough riders dumb asses. It was the colored troopers and the other white regular troopers that took san Juan hill and kettle hill. Stop watching TV movies and read the facts!!!

@@ricardocantoral7672 To answer your inquiry, as somewhat of a TR buff- He didn't exactly "charge" up any hill during the war that we know of. I emphasize the word in quotations because that often is spoken/written with the connotation of being mounted on horseback as a cavalry officer. The more accurate statement would be that TR LED his men up the well, so far I can tell you. The Rough Riders were dismounted cavalry, for there were not enough naval vessels to take both the men and their horses with them. That's the best answer that I can give to you at this time. As for the charge against TR regarding black troops: I suspect the the other person you spoke with has an axe to grind, as I've come upon a primary source, straight from TR himself, praising the Buffalo Soldiers. He may be referring to the "Brownsville Incident", but that's reaching for the scarecrow if he's claiming that TR thought lowly of black troops.

I am sorry your politics did not allow you to enjoy or learn from it. My family emigrated from the Near East to Holland and then immigrated to the US (here in Ohio) and my great uncle to Mexico (Monterrey). There is zero objective doubt that US exceptionalism has made the world a better place. Programs like these assist in looking at the ground work providing the basis for problem solving around the work. And, it is not perfect, but the tools are there to make it better. Shalom.
