Levi Clancy shares his experience in Kurdistan, the homeland of multi-cultures and many religions, showing the co-existence and peace it has.
Levi was born and grew up in 1990 in Los Angeles in the United States. When he was still a kid, he started taking college courses and when he was only 13 years old he transferred to the University of California! At 15, he was abandoned by his family and had to leave university, and started working in medical research as well as web development and graphic arts in order to support himself and make it month to month. At 18, he received a scholarship to return to university, and reconnected with his family. After finishing his baccalaureate in Microbiology, Immunology and Molecular Genetics (MIMG) with a minor in Mesopotamian history, he moved to Erbil. Levi has worked for University of California as a researcher in electron microscopy, oncology and flow cytometry. He has also worked in marketing for clients including the LA Lakers, NCAA, Verizon and AT&T. Currently, he works as a software developer and as a freelance journalist. Levi has been featured on CBS News and LA Times. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Ever since I transcribed the stories of Christians brutally forced and chased out of Baghdad and Mosul by ISIS and learned how the Kurds protected them, ushering them to safety, I have had a deep respect that has grown into love the more and more I know about them. They are a fantastic people. I don't know what President Trump is doing. I only hope the Kurds find a way.

Colleen Jennings They also disarmed and abandoned Christians to ISIS without warning on multiple occasions. They’re extremely self-interested. Don’t believe anything they do isn’t for establishing a country for theirselves. They don’t do anything out of real friendship.

Just like all the other presidents, Trump uses them as pawns in a strategy game. Obama helped us the most by airbombing ISIS in 2014, which gave the YPG and YPJ (the women fighters) respite from all the losses on the ground. Help came very late (when Kurds were at a critical moment, about to be wiped out of existence by ISIS, and Turkey's Erdogan was even funding ISIS), but it came eventually and we started to reclaim the town of Kobane and drive out ISIS. The YPG/YPJ were clever. They infiltrated ISIS camps by pretending to be them, cooking for them and killing 50 of them by poison. Of course, they themselves died and made the ultimate sacrifice so that the middle east could have democracy and freedom and so that Kurds could live on their own land independently.

@@leviclancy Oh, I'm honored by your feedback, todah rabah! Although my web activism could never be compared to what you've been doing for them, I try to raise awareness to their struggle as often as possible, especially in rough times like now, with the withdrawal of the US troops from Rojava. I just descend from long-ago converted Jews but have been interested in the history of the people and the modern, secular state of Israel for some time and felt really happy to see a Jewish person like you speaking up for them and helping them build their nation!

Jo Alex Sg Thank you so much, and chag sameach (happy holidays) for Sukkot. This video had a few hundred views until just a few days or weeks ago, so work hard please on sharing awareness about Kurds. Also please learn and share about Assyrians, Ezidis, Yarsani, Turkomanis, and the many Arabs who also support the causes. It's a lifelong journey and every time you share then you'll also have the opportunity to learn more and it'll sprout in unexpected ways like this speech recently has, In such heartbreaking circumstances then every bit of awareness helps. The people here in Erbil are watching and listening to the global reaction.

This is a pure propaganda for the Kurdish parties. A Christian or a Yezidi would never get a high ranking position if they're not members of the Kurdish Democratic Party (KDP). Don't forget that as late as the 1960's, most parts of North Iraqi had a Christian majority. Christians were displaced to Baghdad, Mosul and other Iraqi cities and were never allowed to go back to their villages.

I mentioned Kirkuk because it was part of the Kurdistan Region's administration when I did this talk and because it has a huge Kurdish population. Iraq etc invaded Israel, not the other way around, and no the blue stripes on the flag don't represent the rivers.
