No problem, I would of killed to see him preform live with that guitar! I'm a huge fan haha, I so happen to be lucky and live extremely close to his Carnation property back in the woods near Tolt Highlands, where Kurt and Courtney spent times almost reclused either slamming heroin or to spend with their newborn Frances. I've seen a picture of him sitting in the living room of his cabin, presenting a kitten to baby Frances when she's in her crib with a background of a dense forest through a window. Man.... It's just absolutely fucking beautiful back here in the woods of Carnation! I mean the main reason we bought our property back here is pretty much the same for why Kurt and Courtney did in June of 1992... To Get Away From All The Calamity and Drama That Happens Daily In Seattle... Hahah! But in the end, Nirvana's always been a huge staple (music and personality wise), to all my friends and I growing up in the Snoqualmie Valley. Not to mention all the countless others who have an outstanding appreciation for the Seattle music scene and the State of Washington itself!

There's a difference between a "player" and a "writer" Kurt kept it simple on purpose and goofed off half the time playing guitar because he wasn't into music for the machine gun solos, and anyone who says "I can play that song with a blindfold on, it's easy and that band sucks" is incredibly ignorant of the fact that there was also a brilliant vocal melody and interesting lyrics in those songs too :P ps. there are a lot of guitarist that can shred but not a lot that can write simple guitar riffs like the ones to "Lithium" or "Heart Shaped Box"

There are generally two types of musicians: those who focus on playing their instrument, and those who focus on songwriting. The idea is to use your instrument as a means for creating songs and sounds, not to be technically amazing. Since he chose to focus on the art of songwriting, he clearly never bothered to put much effort into his lead guitar parts and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that

The commenters here who seem to love to point out Kurt's lacking technical guitar playing ability don't seem to understand how music works. Kurt Cobain may not have been a "good" guitar player (the term "good" is an opinionated word and thus isn't a good choice for describing something to other people) but he created sounds that people liked and that's all that really matters. The term "music" isn't based on skill or even whether or not it sounds "good" to someone, and really, is there such a thing as guitar playing skill? You can play guitar anyway you want, there is no wrong way as long as you're getting sound out of it. A guitar player having skill is based on one's own idea of what skill is. Think about it.
@markokecman1177
@markokecman1177 10 жыл бұрын
Except that he was sloppy as hell and even though he was a great song writer his "soloing" skills were poor... And by that I mean that most of the time he wasn't able to play what he initially intended to..in that exact moment... by improvising...
@TrogdorMan
@TrogdorMan 10 жыл бұрын
You do realize you just used the word "skills", don't you?
@markokecman1177
@markokecman1177 10 жыл бұрын
Yep. As a guitarist I know why "skill" is needed or why practicing is needed for good (better) guitar playing. Your hand muscles need time to develop so you would be able to play faster, more accurate and with a lot more emotion. Once again, his songs were great! His songs harmony is great but it's lacking in melody. He wasn't bad in terms that he couldn't play the guitar, he just couldn't improvise. There are ZERO improvisational songs by Nirvana. They created good but fairly simple music. It's like saying Bob Dylan is a great guitar player just because he wrote a bunch of good songs. There's a difference between a guitar player and a guitar virtuoso. It's one thing to compose music, and it's a completely another thing to play what you feel, to create music at the moment of playing. Kurt's solos were weak and pretty repetitive. They aren't solos, they are, as you said sounds or effects. He isn't playing what he feels at that moment, he's just trying to "add some flavor" to the song. All that can sound good, but you can't really call that improvisation. Other than those "effects" he mostly plays just chords of any particular song they were playing.
@TrogdorMan
@TrogdorMan 10 жыл бұрын
I never said I thought he was a good guitar player, in fact I said the opposite of that. My point was that what Kurt Cobain played was music, and that it doesn't take a lot of what people consider to be skill to make something that qualifies as music. There are many people who listen to music and don't play an instrument so they probably don't exactly know if something is challenging to play or not, the reason they like it is because they like the sound. I play guitar as well and I realize that it does require your definition of skill to play with feeling, (I can't necessarily do that, but I can fake it, as in I can make it have that sound and not feel the emotions) but really, that kind of playing with feeling doesn't quite apply to this genre of music, this isn't blues and when most people say play with feeling they mean to play in a bluesy fashion. When I play punk rock-type riffs I usually hit the strings harder than usual because I'm getting into the music, "feeling" it, if you will. If the feeling of a song is anger, shouldn't hitting the strings harder count as "playing with feeling"? Feelings (aka emotions) come in a wide variety so I don't see why one couldn't play with a feeling that wouldn't cause the player to contort their faces like Stevie Ray Vaughn. In the sense of actual emotions like I just described, Kurt played with plenty of feeling. Go look up a live performance of "Breed" and tell me that the "solo" in that song doesn't fit with the feeling of that song. It has a crazy kind of feeling and when Kurt gets down on the floor and starts making all that noise it sounds like it fits perfectly with the mood set up by the song. Anyways... as stated before, guitar playing skill is based on what one's own idea of skill is. I personally don't care for a lot of the guitar players that people consider to be the most skilled (for example, there's Steve Vai, Joe Satriani or Eddie Van Halen) because I don't think their music sounds good, however I do think Nirvana's music sounds good and that's the entire point, it sounds good to people and that is all that matters.
@markokecman1177
@markokecman1177 10 жыл бұрын
well... yeah... that's kinda what I thought in the first place, and yeah blues is the most "emotional" kind of playing, but you can play emotionally to any kind of music (Jimmy Page played emotionally always even though he played heavy metal, and so did Chuck Schuldiner and he played death metal).. but anyway we just agreed that kurt wasn't such a great player and that's it. His music was great, his playing so-so... And playing good is "skillful" playing, but playing something that "sounds good" is something different. Skillful playing isn't opinionated (to be able to play skillful you need years and years of practice), but if the player sounds good or not that's is opinionated and on that part I agree.

I think there are two main ways of creating guitar solos... One is focusing on the solo as the main thing, sometimes building the song to the "climax", which can be the guitar solo; and the other is building a good, catchy song and using the solo as a way of giving more power to this song by understanding its value. The second one is the way I think Kurt really mastered. Most lead parts in Nirvana's catalogue are based on highlight the base harmony/chords of noisy yet extremely catchy songs, made with pop sensibility - even when, ironically, attacking the so called "pop".

I'm not saying this because like many others I love Nirvana but genuinely as a guitar player I do not think that Kurt was as bad as people say. Nirvana and more specifically Kurt was strictly all about the melody. I just think that most of all he liked simplicity in music. He's a good guitar player in a different sense, he managed to squeeze a lot out of simple major and minor chords.

Kurt isn't a "skilled guitarist" by any means, he was really just playing what he felt. The stronger understanding you hold over that concept, the more his music, solos, or whatever you're analyzing will make sense. The reason he was in that "top 100 guitarist list" is because the dude had style and a unique artistic vision. Regardless of how you feel about Kurt's technical abilities, it's hard to deny that Nirvana had some kick ass, unconventional riffs

If these critics on KZbin ever went to a musical school, they most definitely can sing Teen Spirit without much trouble, except for timbre, of course. Playing it, on the other hand, doesn't require skill at all. You could teach a non-musician to learn it within a couple of weeks, providing he has a solid sense of rhythm. As for the first sentence, I'll just stare silently due to sheer stupidity of that statement.

Cobain never tried or wanted to be a virtuoso, so stop criticizing him for not being one. He has many punk rock influences, and his playing shows it. He's not trying to impress anyone by playing technically sound passages, but he's trying to destroy the idea of it using his anti-solos.
@quietcrowd
@quietcrowd 8 жыл бұрын
+mahlerite If that's the case, then I suggest not to look up to Kurt. If he never tried or wanted to be better at guitar, or in life, then why look up to him? Someone who actually cares would want to be and actually try to do better. In that case, he just seems to be really childish and really full of himself. Why does everyone make excuses for his terrible live solos? If he's not trying to impress anyone, then why didn't he just play simple solos? To fuck up the song by trying to play fast and sounding terrible to try to come off as an "anti-hero" is absolutely pathetic, and unprofessional, I bet some people in the crowd never wanted to go to another Nirvana show after seeing something like that. I don't see why nobody should criticize Kurt for not being a virtuoso, but everyone else seems to have the right to criticize actual guitar virtuosos(who spent years of practice, for hours a day, and gave their full potential to better themselves as guitar players), mainly by bashing them for being able to play fast, but back it up with the pathetic excuse that "playing fast has no feel", which isn't true, by the way, it's just something to feed the egos of those who can't play fast. In reality, feeling has no limit to how fast you play, or what techniques, modes, etc., that you use.

Besides, him not caring from your view is not his own view, nor is it my view of him. He actually did care, but not the way many people do. He cared about his music and was very passionate. This can be seen in his explosive performances, heard in his screams, and read in his writings. The man is a legend for many, but not a legend for all.

+Dan Butler I was born a year after he died, so no, I didn't know him personally, but I have watched interviews of him, and he comes off as a childish asshole sometimes, especially when talking about other musicians. He was quite open about his drug abuse, and throughout his life, even as a teenager, he was doing some pretty serious drugs that could've killed him much sooner, and last, but not least, it's quite well-known that he died from shooting himself(after watching Soaked In Bleach, I'm not so sure, though). Sure, he made good songs, but a lot of his improvised solos were quite embarrassing, nothing to really drool over, sorry, but you have to face the truth, he was a good songwriter, but a terrible lead guitarist, I have nothing against him, though.

+Dan Butler There is no excuse to purposefully play like shit in front of, literally, THOUSANDS of people, and not to mention being on heavy drugs while playing live. Those people paid for tickets, which were probably expensive, and came to see him perform, and he gives a show that disappointed some of the crowd. He was doing drugs because Aberdeen is a shit hole and there's nothing to do there? Wow, I've never heard of that, that's a new level of pathetic. He couldn't make plans with friends to go somewhere other than Aberdeen? I live in Virginia, and the city I live in is rich with history, but barely has anything to do(the downtown area is nice, though), but I'm not on drugs, I don't drink, and I don't smoke. Instead, I make plans with friends to go to Richmond or up north(mainly the Springfield area, where Dave Grohl grew up, and where I used to live), usually to go to shows. My point in that is, there's always something you can do, doing nothing and moping about it will result in nothing, and doing drugs will do nothing as well, in fact, it would make things worse. Sure, artists will have opinions on other artists, but it depends on what they say, and sometimes, they could come off as real pricks, and that includes Kurt. I understand he had depression, I've known that since I was a teenager, but after watching "Soaked In Bleach" recently, I'm not so sure if he was suicidal(I was bored one night and came across it), but that isn't an excuse for being an asshole and using heavy drugs, that would just make things worse. I actually do know a lot about the guy, and looking back on those facts about him, he really is kind of pathetic.

Now OUR music. Who ever thought screaming would work in rock? Back when Chicago and Crosby Stills Nash was popular no one. Then Kurt single handedly buried them. Motley Cru, Cinderella, Skid Row, Michael Jackson. A troubled kid with average guitar skills changed music virtually overnight. To me, music is not about technical ability. Joe Satriani sounds like crap to me. He has all that ability, but his music sucks. Kurt was able to get more out of his guitar than his technical prowess would suggest. He played easy songs, easy riffs, easy......but GOOD. He had power. He wrote great songs and had pretty amazing control over his tones and feedback. People say he sucked at guitar, but I don't think thats right. He was a great guitar player, in his own way. Its like modern art. People can emulate him, but nobody can write the next Nirvana song. Some people get off on songs being complex and difficult to play because its impressive that the artist can actually pull it off. Other people just like listening to something that sounds good. Kurt Cobain is one of my top 10 guitar players for the power and weight he could throw around. From the floor to the ceiling and then smash you right back down again.

His music had feeling, no one ever called him the best. Kurt wasn't about complex solos, he was more simple. Also keep in mind this is Seattle grunge, not metal

THERE GOES MY HERO :3 ... Cobain is an inspiration for me. His humanity, his guitar skills, his humilty. Humilty its the greatest thing in Cobain. He was not looking to be the best for you. Just for him and nobody else. Remember, humilty makes awesome people anywhere.

He was a fantastic player. All his songs were awesome. I was 14 when he left, next month I'll be 40. The 'Come As You Are' riff was the first thing I learned (incorrectly) I play alsorts of a mish mash of styles now but I can still appreciate this. I've been playing almost as long as he was alive and he has always been inspiring with his style of playing. The first solo I created was inspired by the 'School' solo. I loved heard the odd squeaks and groans from his playing on bootleg recordings

He was most likely a virtuoso guitarist in songs like Blew, Aero Zeppelin, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Love Buzz.
