The saddest thing is that had Kurt gotten well, he would have never wanted anyone to hear this tape. I think I’ve been in darker places than this in my youth. But i wouldn’t want it relived on youTube. I suppose if I were dead, nothing would make a difference. But if he were alive, I don’t think he would have wanted anyone this deep into his dark space. Everybody wants to know about Rock Stars.

Victoria Clarke interviews Nirvana at Roskilde. Reflecting on the experience in 2011, she stated: The authors' initial proposal was to write an unauthorized biography, over which the subject would have no right of veto. It was not to be the standard celebrity puff of rock biographies. It was to be a serious examination of the social forces that had created Nirvana. 'Kurt was never hugely supportive,' recalled Ms Clarke. 'He was always polite, but distant.' Chris Novoselic, the bass player, gave her a long interview, and a Filofax full of people she should contact - particularly former drummers of the group, of which there are a lot. At first, everything seemed to go swimmingly. The very first agent that we approached was AP Watt, one of the oldest in the UK, and they signed us up straight away. Britt was friendly with Nirvana's publicist Anton Brooks, who put us in touch with their manager John Silva. We had dinner with John, and he liked our idea. Very soon there was a bidding war for our book. We signed contracts with Hyperion in the US, and Boxtree in Britain and pretty soon we had actual cash in our hands and we were ready to roll. I was given ‘Access All Areas’ passes for Nirvana's European tour in June 1992. It was decided that I should be the one to go on the tour, while Britt went to Seattle to research the ‘grunge’ scene there. I joined the band in Dublin, and traveled with them to Belfast, Paris and Denmark. One afternoon at Roskilde in Denmark, I was wandering around the backstage area, when I bumped into Courtney Love. We had not spoken much, but I had introduced myself earlier in the tour and she had been friendly. She had previously starred in a film with Shane and The Pogues called ‘Straight to Hell’ and had got on well with some of the band. Because we had decided to include Courtney in our book, I asked her if she would mind doing an interview with me. She said she would be happy to do one. But Kurt was not at all happy with this idea. Later that same day, I was approached by Janet Billig, the band's American publicist who told me that the band would prefer if I left the tour immediately. I was devastated. I actually broke down in tears. I simply could not understand what I had done wrong. Kurt, it was explained to me, was not happy that I had asked Courtney for an interview. That was the reason. I was not to know at the time that Courtney would appear in the September issue of Vanity Fair and that the article would quote her as saying that she had used drugs while pregnant with Frances Bean, the couple's child. And that this would lead to a whole heap of trouble. Britt and I explained to Nirvana's management that we had no choice but to continue with our book, but that as fans of the band we would prefer to maintain a good relationship with them. At this stage, there was no animosity between us. It was explained to me that while they understood this, they no longer felt comfortable having a journalist at such close quarters. And so I traveled to Seattle, to research their background. In Seattle, I stayed with Charles Peterson who was a very old friend of the band, and he took me around and introduced me to all the people who were relevant to the story. I began interviewing people about the band. Everyone that I spoke to in Seattle said pretty much the same things, and confirmed what I had already discovered. Which was that Nirvana were a really nice, friendly, genuine bunch of guys. Apart from that, people didn't have a lot to say. What most people wanted to do was talk about Courtney. And the things that they said about her were not positive. I have to confess that although I am not proud of it, I rather enjoyed the bitching because it made for a more interesting story. While I was in Seattle, Britt was basing herself in LA, and while she was there, she interviewed a man called James Moreland, who had been Courtney's previous husband. Like a lot of people, he had some negative things to say about Courtney, but they were not serious allegations. They mainly concerned her treatment of his puppies and her taste in music. At this point, none of the material that Britt and I had gathered could in any way have threatened Kurt or Courtney. Then overnight, everything changed. The September issue of Vanity Fair appeared, with Courtney on the cover and in an interview with Lyn Hirschberg, she was quoted as saying that she had used Class A drugs, while pregnant. In the state of California it is a criminal offense to knowingly take drugs while pregnant and if proven, it can result in a child being removed from the parents. There was an immediate backlash against Courtney in the US media, and while she denied the story, Lyn Hirschberg stood by it and claimed to have tapes to prove it. Intrigued, Britt interviewed Lyn Hirschberg who claimed to have been subjected to verbal abuse and harassment by Courtney, as a result of the interview. Somehow, Courtney discovered that Britt had spoken to Lyn Hirschberg, and there was an immediate backlash against us and our book. I arrived at a Nirvana show in Seattle later in the month, and was told that I had been barred from all of their gigs. Charles, the photographer with whom I had been staying withdrew his permission for us to use his photos, which had been an integral part of the book. Friends of the band who had not hesitated to tell me how much they disliked Courtney now told me that they could no longer speak to me. Then, on the night of October 22, while I was in bed with the flu, Courtney called me. I heard the phone ring, but switched it to silent. In the morning, the answer machine tape was full and there was thirty minutes of messages from both Kurt and Courtney, which is where I began this story. After I left Seattle, I wanted to call Kurt and see if the situation could be sorted out. I knew that he was furious, but I still liked him and respected him. Having discussed the matter with our agent, Britt and I were advised not to speak to Kurt and Courtney. Instead, we made a decision which further inflamed the situation. We gave the answer machine tape to Entertainment Weekly magazine and they printed the transcript in full, across two pages. The story was picked up by the LA Times, the New York Times and most of the British and Irish papers. If this book ever came out, it would already be world famous. At this point we still had not yet begun actually writing the book, and to be honest, if we had not been obligated to our publishers, I would have moved back to London and abandoned the project. It had never been my intention to write a muck-raking book. I felt totally out of my depth. (Clarke, 2011) & (White, 1993)

Courtney Courtney Courtney is what I see in these comments. She is a living cancer and has nothing to do with Nirvana. They damn well knew she was a narcissistic psychopath trust fund brat like most American punk rockers & wanted ugly dirt for the book. She is not nor ever was a member of Nirvana. They intentionally stepped in an ant hill & wanted every ugly bit of trash possible for the book. No wonder Nirvana were pissed off! Also, they were male feminists and thought "rock n roll women" would stand by the code, "What happens on the bus stays on the bus." That is their fault for trusting women not to publish personal escapades, women live for gossip & starting trouble,it is their nature. I hope the other 2 wised up & went on to understand God's natural law. Men and women aren't "co-workers" or "peers" we are radically different from and compliment each other but, they shouldn't have allowed someone with so much access to their personal lives.

@@bootyshortsband Call it whatever you want as far as today's equivalent, I read the entire blurb and am seriously disgusted about how some garbage magazine needs to go ahead and disclose a drug addicted pregnant woman's intent on harming her unborn child. Unless the magazine was going to help Courtney get clean and protect the baby - there was only one reason to air that interview, which is to sell copies. I don't respect that profession at all - I've seen plenty of clips of celebrities being stalked and harassed and unfortunately the laws in places like California never did nor do they today protect celebrities and their privacy. Even though I'm not an expert on drug addiction or drugs in general, I think it's clearly a legitimate disease that should not be exploited to sell magazines. Kurt was a very talented musician who should be celebrated for his talents and thankfully Courtney Love got her life together and her daughter looks like she's a healthy woman. That's what matters - I wish them the best and respect their privacy.

Often when talent seems so advanced for a person's age, "wise beyond their years" the public tends to kind of overlook that an immature person is behind it. But people and media portray these people like they're not human and some people actually buy into all of it. Especially those without the same or similar life experiences to know certain things. That said, the range and quality of people out there is so huge. There are good people out there that can be looked to, but it's super rare. And even those people can change in time. The story of Kurt's fame while short has quite a few ups and downs. These messages detail the very peak of the animosity Kurt Cobain had developed towards tabloid press and gossip columns. Nirvana basically breaks big during the fall of 1991 and for a few weeks, they're pretty much just talk of the town. Their leader is a quiet, mysterious brooding type who starts appearing in all kinds of magazines. Then, around the beginning of the following year, rumors start to spread about Kurt Cobain nodding off in interviews and being on heroin. Like anyone else who becomes a person of interest, he goes from being a person in the music space to a person in the public space which opens up the door for the gossip columns and other tabloid press prevalent in the 1990s. Vanity Fair goes for the blood and writes this hit piece on Courtney and Kurt and their habits - like all gossip bullshit, it's _exactly_ the story they need. In response, their lives are forever changed and Kurt, already apprehensive to the media, declares the entire industry his enemy. Rising star to troubled junkie - perfect narrative for them to write about. This book was going to be essentially a culmination of all the rumors about both Kurt and Courtney and it was going to double down on all the dirt. Remember too, Kurt Cobain also renegotiated the royalties on Nevermind during this time including a retroactive deduction from Krist and Dave's cut that had already been paid out which created a very intense falling out with his bandmates. So, there was reason to believe a lot of disgruntled people would have words to print. Luckily, in a much more level headed response and noted in Danny Goldberg's book, Nirvana authorized an official book detailing their lives via _Come as You Are_ in direct response to the potential book in question Victoria Clarke was going to release. Like Danny said, _most_ of the big name rock press were actually allies during this whole ordeal including MTV, Rolling Stone, etc. So very upset with everyone, Kurt was ready to just launch an attack on every single journalist out there in the liner notes for _Incesticide_ but Danny persuaded him not to even though, Kurt had final say. Let's be honest though - all publicity is good publicity and if you don't think this whole back and forth offered no benefits to the band's potential, you're mistaken. Cooler heads prevailed and by basically taking control of their own narrative, the incentive for the gossip book diminished as well as I'm sure the legal repercussions finally sunk in should Clarke and Co. have gone through with it. During this time, Kurt began to check himself into what became periodic visits to rehab in an attempt to stay clean. During the time of _Come as You Are_ and the beginning of the In Utero tour - he was probably at this healthiest and most positive. Unfortunately, it didn't last long and by the beginning of the following year - he was back into deep addiction which eventually led to his death. Messages like this no doubt prove that off the record, this guy had a very dark side to him coupled with an ongoing addiction that...at times swallowed his life.

Before her he just wanted to live hard, and fast, then go out in a blaze of glory, before getting stale. His daughter made him want a different life. I just don't think is healthy to put him on a pedestal and victimize him for every one of his decisions. It's super crucial to explain the timeline when discussing these calls. Between the time of the initial interviews for this book and these phone calls, the Vanity Fair article "Strange Love" by Lynn Hirschberg had come out. That article completely screwed up Kurt and Courtney's lives beyond repair. So not only was Kurt in the throes of heroin addiction, he was desperately trying to keep everything together and viewed this book, something he wasn't 100% on board with already, as another potential character assassination that could further rip his world apart. His daughter was taken from him, Courtney was likely in just as dark a place as he was if not darker, and here he is a 25 year old drug addict, paranoid, desperate and likely feeling the pressure coming in from all sides. All people have their dark days. But I'm surprised that "fans" will listen to this, knowing at least some of the back story, and immediately jump to Lennon comparisons. Wild.

No it wasn’t. Kurt said in an interview that “rape me,” was not about the media raping him. He also explained that rape me was about actual rape and was sarcastic (like he often was in songs). He explains that people that rape should be raped, like a form of poetic justice

I never really cared for Kurt and the whole….allure of him. As I say here listening to this shit, all I could think was “he was such a junkie”, but then I remembered that I absolutely adore Layne Staley and he was a junkie, too. I guess the difference is, Layne never blamed anyone for his problems or went around acting untouchable. Drug addiction, in any case, is a terrible and sad thing. Watching someone destroy themselves with addiction is sad.

This is what journalists , paparazzi, “close friends” , put famous people through. Enough to make anyone lose their mind.

He was clearly angry. He wrote "Rape Me" about journalists way before this. Isn't that song a bit dark? All his lyrics are dark. Did we find out 30+ years later? Internet works a bit slow ...

I don't think this is that bad? It's someone being pissed off that someone took advantage of him, & Dave was pissed too. Dave just kept his composure. Kurt was angrier & high

Dave Grohl knows far more about Kurt's death than we will ever know. Listen to his tone. He knew Courtney Love long before Kurt. Just like everyone around him, they kept their mouths shut. Silence speaks volumes.
