Inside Kurt’s House • INSIDE Kurt Cobain’s A...
Kurt Donald Cobain (February 20, 1967 - c. April 5, 1994) was an American musician, singer, and songwriter. He became known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, guitarist, and primary songwriter of the rock band Nirvana. Through his angst-fueled songwriting and anti-establishment persona, his compositions widened the thematic conventions of mainstream rock music. He was heralded as a spokesman of Generation X and is widely recognized as one of the most influential alternative rock musicians.
Cobain formed Nirvana with Krist Novoselic and Aaron Burckhard in 1987, establishing themselves as part of the Seattle music scene that later became known as grunge. Burckhard was replaced by Chad Channing before the band released their debut album Bleach (1989) on Sub Pop, after which Channing was in turn replaced by Dave Grohl. With this finalized line-up, the band signed with DGC and found commercial success with the single "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from their critically acclaimed second album Nevermind (1991). Cobain wrote many other hit Nirvana songs such as "About a Girl", "All Apologies", "Aneurysm", "Come as You Are", "Heart-Shaped Box", "In Bloom", "Lithium", "Something in the Way", and "You Know You're Right". Although he was hailed as the voice of Generation X following Nirvana's sudden success, he resented this and believed his message and artistic vision had been misinterpreted by the public.
During his final years, Cobain struggled with a heroin addiction and chronic depression. He also struggled with the personal and professional pressures of fame, and was often in the spotlight for his tumultuous marriage to fellow musician Courtney Love, with whom he had a daughter named Frances. In March 1994, he overdosed on a combination of champagne and Rohypnol, subsequently undergoing an intervention and detox program. On April 8, 1994, he was found dead in the garage of his Seattle home at the age of 27,[5] with police concluding that he had died around three days earlier from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.
Cobain was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alongside Nirvana bandmates Novoselic and Grohl, in their first year of eligibility in 2014. Rolling Stone included him on its lists of the 100 Greatest Songwriters of All Time, 100 Greatest Guitarists, and 100 Greatest Singers of All Time. He was ranked 7th by MTV in the "22 Greatest Voices in Music", and was placed 20th by Hit Parader on their 2006 list of the "100 Greatest Metal Singers of All Time".
Perched on a hill in Hollywood Heights, the abandoned haunt once rented by Kurt Cobain has fallen into disrepair, but its past is a bit more illustrious than its present. According to the 2011 documentary “Hit So Hard,” Cobain wrote most of Nirvana’s third and final studio album “In Utero” in the 2,500-square-foot home.

I met Kurt at the Roskilde Festival in 1992. I never would have imagined his life would end up the way it did. He was positive, polite, and humble! 🎸

Kurt was massively negative, just look at some of his lyrics…depression or bi-polar , on top of being a dope addict definitely didn’t help and marrying a leach wasn’t good either…he was no longer poor, but he was just as miserable..

That's not how he presented himself to me. How Kurt was in his private life is another story. Like many people he had a hard time being famous. In addition, I'm also not a Courtney Love fan!! She was a bad influence that pushed him further into darkness instead of helping him!!!@@toddprater14

I hate the thought of it being demolished. Somebody with money could fix it up, even if they had to start from scratch. Air bnb it with Kurt decor in it so his fans could enjoy staying in a bit of his history. I realize it’s in a spot that would be hard to get construction supplies to, but the surrounding homes are capable of being maintained so that house should be, too. Sadly, it won’t happen. It’s my favorite home of his, I love the architectural details - very unique. Legendary music written there. It’ll be a heartbreaking day when they tear it down. Thanks for keeping us updated, Scott.

Holy moley Scott! Thanks for taking this one for your team - those steps again, oy vey! The woodwork around the windows and under the roof line, classic architecture that I hope whomever tears it down is able to save it and possibly use it in any new construction. Which begs the question - how in the world would one go about demolishing a house perched on such a skinny ass 'terrace' that doesn't seem to have a street wide enough for a car, let alone a dump truck and bulldozer? They gonna use helicopters or ginormous cranes? Neighbors are gonna fuhREAK! Thanks again. My future cardiologist thanks you, too. Damn straight-up concrete stairmaster from hell.

As a Floridian, my mind is boggled at how they built all of these houses close together on a hill, with all of these little walkways that are like little actual roads. How do builders and construction workers maneuver around in these small areas to be able to do anything? You certainly can't get any heavy machinery up there. What if you need a new refrigerator delivered? What if you are receiving an important package? The UPS guy has to walk 500 feet through a maze to get it to you? My guess is that Cobain's house is still standing simply because nobody can get up there to demolish it lol.

I sometimes wonder do I miss the man or those magical 90s when generation x had its voice. Cobain was one of a number of voices which represented our generation. Layne Staley and Chris Cornell as well . We’re holding onto pieces of these gifted people out of the nostalgia of our youth. I never met the man but he was part of the rhythm of the times. 1989 to 1995. I do wish he had a grave.

It's sad they can't keep it preserved, but tbh, I can see it being a huge headache to the neighbors, especially if it was turned into a museum or Airbnb. The area is so narrow--how would all that tourist foot traffic interfere with the people who live in that area? Where would visitors park? Would a musuem/Airbnb based around a man mostly famous for how he died 30 years ago actually be able to sustain the funding put into the maintenance? And realistically, for how long? There is something forlorn, though, about demolishing the place a family lived and loved together. But it happens all the time.

Thanks for the long hike again Scott. I Always wondered if the seclusion of the house was the appeal to them moving up there. I know the small apartment they had on Spaulding st. was quite run down but very accessible to get around town. This house had to be hell on them with a baby to have to moniver around town for food, supply's, and appointment's, and stuff. Knowing what i know about Kurt and how lazy he could be I would imagine that he was a home body, and would do all he could to prevent the long walk in and out of this place. They probably had plenty of runners that would deliver goods and services to them just to avoid the long walk.

I just imagine chilling with Kurt in the morning at that house in the living room while he played acoustic or something just talking or something. What a cool experience that would of been. So beautiful and sunny there. Much love Scott!

No matter how many times you hike back up to Kurt's house, I will watch! ❤

Has nobody tried to get a local politician involved? Maybe they can somehow intervene to prevent the demolition. There is clearly historic significance both musically and culturally as the Cobain-Love home at the height of Nirvana, not to mention that it was built by a famous architect. I realize there was an add-on, but the house is essentially the same. Whatever was added on can probably even be removed if need be. It looks like the bones of the house are fine, just floors and walls need some help - and that’s repairable. This seems possible to restore. With the right investors raising money, they can open a museum and/or even use it as an Airbnb (kind of like the first house you showed us up by Seattle). My guess is that the locals just want an excuse to have it torn down because they don’t want the tourists. Honestly, I do t think it would bring droves of tourists to that degree. I don’t see bus loads of people going up to that height of the Hills cause people would still have to partially hike and most folks won’t be able are want to bother. It could even be made a provision by the local HOA - tourists and Airbnb allowed but no bus loads. Someone needs to find out who owns the house and see how much they’d want for it before it’s demolished, get a politician involved, etc. I bet TMZ could find out the details for the owner and possibly even get the house saved and restored with the right connections, lol.

They will probably leave one wall standing so it's a "renovation" as opposed to a new build, so part of this place will be incorporated into whatever the insane new place will be. What an absolute pain in the ass that's going to be to demolish, and build.

I looked him up... Ralph Flewelling designed mostly schools/colleges. But here are some notable ones of his that aren't schools...He designed the Electric Fountain in Beverly Hills in 1931, the post office in Beverly Hills in 1932 and 1933. Later, he designed the city hall and police station in Newport Beach, California in 1949. And of course Kurt Cobain's house there and the neighboring house that you read the plaque from. It's too bad and sad it's being torn down...if it never had the addition or renovation...it could be a landmark...in the sense of untouchable. It is one no matter that. But it will be so upsetting to see another house there one day.
