My first rule when travelling abroad is, 'never trust in someone who approach to you first'
@Nexar263 жыл бұрын
There is one exception...the Taxi Drivers at Siem Reap Airport. I didn't trust the driver and he wanted to sell me a temple tour even before he brought me to the hotel. And he realized that I don't trust him, so he showed a license and told me to check it online. I did and it seemed legit. So I booked the temple tour with him after he brought me to the hotel. He was such a genuine and honest guy, he even brought me to his hometown so I can eat some snake after I asked him questions about where to eat snake in Cambodia on the temple tour.

As I came close to take a look, around three guys working at that store all came towards me, and surrounded me, showing me boards full of bracelets, talking really fast and loud, invading my personal space and putting their boards and bracelets inches away from my face. As a result, they annoyed me and stressed me out and I told them to leave me alone and left. If they hadn't done that, I would have probably bought from them. This is an extremely stressful situation and can ruin your day. The worst experience I had of this kind was in Marrakech. One street hawker approached me and my friend and offered to take us on a "tour" of the city at a "very competitive price". We declined the offer in a polite and respectful manner but he continued to follow us for at least half an hour, pushing in to our faces and becoming increasingly aggressive. So we decided to visit a roof-top cafe for an hour to try to shake him off. When we got back on to the street, yes, of course, he was waiting for us. After another half an hour of this he finally gave up when we approached a group of young men in a market and they shooed him off.

I was in Egypt. An Egyptian guest house manager summed it up well. He said, "A guy in the street will point to the sky and then tell you to give him baksheesh. They will say that for everything." It is ridiculous. They want money for doing the most unsolicited worthless services and won't leave you alone. They walk with you or chase you with their horse carriage no matter how much you tell them no or ignore them (I tried both strategies). If you go left they tell you to go right to follow them somewhere. If you go start to go right, they tell you to go left and to follow them. Then they say they are friendly and you are not but really they are just scammers.

Egypt would have been better if the scamming and treating tourist poorly was stopped. I felt so unsafe and frustrated the entire time I was there. Can easily say this is the worst trip I've been on with respect to how I felt the entire time. The country has beautiful sites to see but what the locals fail to realize is when they treat tourists like a walking piggy bank and treat you poorly, you'd never want to go there again. I'm glad I went but I didn't enjoy this trip as much as I could have.

This happened to me in every part of Egypt I visited. Many taxi drivers definitely work with them, though the better hotels will warn you about them as well as unfair prices.
@Mrkva222962 жыл бұрын
exactly, my hotel even had it's own taxi company (of course free of charge for anybody accomodated at their hotel) because they know tourists have big problems with the local taxis. They told us we can take any taxi we like but they don't guarantee the experience and who knows what price they're gonna ask for. So when we went out to the city we took out hotel taxi but when we wanted to get back, there were no taxis from our hotels aroud at that moment so we took a local taxi to get back. We asked how much will the ride cost, he told us the price. When we arrived he doubled the price.

@P S And the worst thing: It pisses people off (sorry for bad language). You know, I lived in Germany for a long time, and I know Germans don't like to be pressured in buying things (and probably many other Europeans and other Westernes neither). I found that very annoying for people in different countries. Once I was in Tunisia and shop sellers were so annoying towards Tourists. I talked a shop owner and told him that may be he would sell much more if he left the tourists in peace visiting his shop. He never had considered that. But unfortunately this "pressing sale" comes also the Western countries. When you want to buy a mobile, people want to pressure to change your phone provider, when you want to buy a fridge, sellers want you to change your energy provider... Annoying, annoying, annoying.

I used live in Cairo in the 90s, just down the road from the Egyptian Museum, so there were plenty of touts. Every day I’d walk past a papyrus shop and every day he’d try and drag me inside. This carried on for months. I tried to tell him, in Arabic, that I wasn’t a tourist, I live here on this street. He would always respond, in English, no come in, just look, just look. It’s really depressing, especially when you live in a city, speak the language, respect the culture, to always be treated like a cash cow. So one day, after the standard exchange, I went into the shop and made him show me every item there, saying before each, in Arabic, I won’t buy it. Then, after an hour, I left. He never asked me again. You have to break through this wall of touts to meet real Egyptians who are genuine and friendly. Go to places tourists don’t go. Get out of Central Cairo or the Pyramids. Avoid Sharm and Hurghada like the plague. Remember, the touts pay through the nose for the right to fleece khawagas, so they are sharks, but they are few in number and never waste their time in places that foreign tourists don’t visit.
