It is very true that you never know how tall something is until you are standing under it and look up. I did this while visiting NYC one new years eve and looked up at the Empire State Building. I could only do so for a minute at a time because it makes you very dizzy and I am not certain if it was really swaying back and forth but it certainly seemed to be. Wonderful video, thank you for sharing it.

In Piazza Maggiore there was less than 50 executions in 700 years ;) The fact of hundreds towers was half unreal. In XIVc there was 98-100 towers but 70 of those was less than 30m tall. The leaning of towers is not because of architects but because of soft-clay ground, with a river every 5-6km.
@nicolanobili21133 жыл бұрын
3'35'' Yes, the façade was never completed. The building was made of bricks and it was supposed to be covered with marble, but marble is not present in that Italian region (it is no coincidence that most great Italian sculpturers are from Tuscany or Veneto, that is where the marble is). All the white marble you see there came from Dalmatia by boat, whereas the red one came from Verona, it was extremely expensive.

The Two Towers are a bit older than you wrote. Legend has it, they were built between 1109 and 1119, however there are hints at an earlier origin. In particular, the taller one was designed using the Roman foot (about 29 cm) instead of the Bolognese foot (about 38 cm), which can only be explained as follows: 1) they used some bricks and stones from an older Roman building 2) the tower, or at least the basement and the first few floors, are much older and date back to the Roman age or early Middle Ages, when the traditional Roman units of measurements were still being used in Bologna.

2'28'' No, San Petronio was NEVER the largest church in the world: it was designed to become the largest church in the world, but it was never finished. It was extremely expensive and, according to some unproven but very credible rumors, the pope did not want any church to be larger than St. Peter's in Rome.

16'40'' You missed one of the functions of the towers: prestige. The taller your tower was, the richer and more powerful your family was. And yes, they had a defensive function, but it was mostly a sort of "deterrent": do you really want to attack a family which has such strong and tall towers?

@@gotchabiqch8942 It might be. Maranello, where Ferrari cars are built, lies at a distance of 50 km from Bologna. And the Ducati factory lies within the town of Bologna itself. Oh, and Lamborghini and Maserati are also made within 20-30 km from the centre of Bologna. That part of Italy is quite understandably nicknamed "the motor valley"
@RaduRadonys3 жыл бұрын
@@nicolanobili2113 That doesn't mean that people in Bologna afford to have such expensive cars though. Just an example, most expensive iPhones are made in the most poor locations.
@nicolanobili21133 жыл бұрын
@@RaduRadonys What you said doesn't hold true for the car and motorbikes brands I mentioned. For instance, Ferrari cars are made EXCLUSIVELY in Maranello, between Modena and Bologna. And in any case, many millionaires who want to buy a Ferrari do come to Maranello, since all these cars are personalized (they ask you for your size, sometimes even for the shoe size for the pedals) and leave to go back home on their new cars. I have seen many, many Ferrari cars in Bologna or the surrounding areas in my life...
