If III: Hot Pursuit introduced the idea of Intense Police Chases in Racing Games, then High Stakes introduced the idea of an engaging Career Mode. Both games revolutionized the Need For Speed Series. Even if High Stakes is somewhat like Hot Pursuit with improvements, the improvements solidified what we wanted in a Need For Speed game.

A lot of fond memories of this game, first time I bought it was when my best friend invited me to go to Chinatown. We had such a great time and we visited a Retro Video Game Store, I wanted a PC Game and I bought "Need For Speed: Road Challenge" which was a version of High Stakes that was released in different regions of Europe. I installed it when I got home and it was such a blast. It was the first ever legitimate video game I ever bought and it pretty much started my love for Video Game Collecting

3:20 Car Interiors of the late 1990s were literal bargain bin quality. GM obviously did it for the Corvette because of Cost Cutting, majority of American Automakers did it and maybe a few European Automakers as well. Overtime the interiors fall apart and electronics start to fail, whereas the Engine and a few other mechanical components still run decently well

NFS Hot Pursuit 1998, High Stakes, Porsche Unleashed and NFS HP2 are the classic OG Need For Speeds. This is a true NFS game, not the Undergrounds, or MW, this is what NFS was always about. Racing stock sports cars, all the way to hypercars. I do like how Criterion brought back this classic vibe of NFS, especially with Hot Pursuit 2010 and Rivals. I grew up playing all of the need for speed, hence my username here lol.

I prefer NFS3 music but everything else goes to this one, such a gem. Not an easy game but not too hard, lots of cars, lots of tracks, good music, well polished, weak spots don't ruin the experience, and you can add as many cars as you want in the PC version.

I’d say the direct competitor to this game in 1999 would be Test Drive 6. I had fun with both back in the day. Definitely a very similar game with a very different selection of cars and more of an international collection of race tracks.

Porsche unleashed/2000 had good graphics on pc and the driving feel on that game was fantastic. This and nfs3 98 and hp2 were also fantastic. Didnt like any after that tbh. The music on the games between 98 and 02 were so energetic.

You must've been born sometime in the 80s, early 90s at the latest, right? It's very interesting to see things from perspective of someone a bit older. My first NFS was Hot Pursuit 2 and I loved it but I mainly grew up with Underground, MW and Carbon, I liked ProStreet, too. Also tried Porsche Unleashed for the first time 5-6 years ago, loved it to death. Too bad I didn't get to play it when I was much younger. So much soul in those older games.

@@visionofdisorder hehe yeah, it's a curse but also a blessing in disguise. Otherwise you could never bring yourself to play older games, and by doing so, you'd miss out on some truly quality games. I grew up in the era of early 3D games with funny looking low-poly 3D models and low-res textures and find myself weirdly attracted to that visual style, despite being able to play much more advanced games nowadays. I find older games easier to get into, without as many tutorials and complicated controls and whatnot.

The first game in my life (it was a PS1-version) and the first crush (the only case I don't regret of being simp) - Mclaren F1 GTR Longtail... And I played it in 2003. And I had a disk with Underground. And I played HS more. That much this game slaps. Oh, and yeah, the great achievement of mine (for me, of course) when I got older - I played PS1-ver. without repeating ANY tournaments.

I am playing this game right now after 20 years, I can tell you this is the best NFS created the amount of detail and love put into the game is amazing.. all the cars sounds so unique, you know what type of car is trying to pass you just by the sound, the handling is very good too, this and NFS underground the best nfs

Porsche Unleashed both PC and PSX versions and the PS2 version of Hot Pursuit 2... and Underground 2 and Most Wanted.. and Gran Turismo 2 and 4.. Moto Racer and stuff.. and I wanna make a racing game that combines everything into one. I'll call it Racing United : The Virtual Heritage of Racing... I hope I'll manage to make it.

This is still to this day my most favorite NFS game. The soundtrack is just masterpiece which directly teleports me to another time. I still listen to those tracks every single day in my car. As for the driving feel - there is an option to chose between Arcade and Simulation for the driving feel. So yeah .. the PC version was the best one there can be.

I absolutely loved the... fragmented (?) screen behind each car depicting the manufacturer, and how it used to show individual car photos and whatnot, it was such a cool little detail for me. best cars by class - B - Mercedes if stock, BMW if level 3 in career. A - Corvette. AA - Bonus Porsche once its unlocked, until then Ferrari F50. AAA McLaren F1 (Mercedes CLK at Raceway 2 and Celtic Ruins). There is no catch up mode, and in career mode with series, the player can repair any damage after each race, but AI will accumulate damage, making them slow towards the end of a series. For a good player, AA Bonus Porche can win against AI in AAA cars. Physics is similar to Need For Speed III, but not the same: High Stakes is a bit faster due to physics changes. High Stakes was the first Need For Speed with an online server. One of the cool online modes was lap knockout, a series of races, where the last place player of each race drove a large dump truck, usually backwards on a track, to block the remaining players; with a full lobby of 8 players, the last race was 6 dump trucks, two racers.

When I went about modding this last year as an exercise, I had several goals in mind: - The cars must be from 1993-1999 - The cars must have polycounts in the range of the vanilla cars and share their art style. (That effectively restricted me to Ryuji Kainoh or AJ_Lethal's older mods only.) ...

- If I couldn't find a suitable dash to pilfer from some other mod, make my own using Google Images and various tools. - If the dash pilfered was unsuitable, too high poly, missing parts etc. trim it. Remove excess polys and fill the gaps, remove glass polys if they added it for some reason (All it does is darken the external environment), add gauges, lighting and textures if they didn't. My all time favorite outside of the Undergrounds, is NFS: Porsche Unleashed. You get to be a test driver for Porsche and do skid pad stuff as well as racing.

Most of the tracks in this game were actually recycled from NFS III: Hot Pursuit, my favorite NFS title of all time. I'm not complaining though, these tracks are definitely amazing to drive

The PS1s music remindes me of countless trying to play and never winning because dumb young me didn't know how to upgrade the cars... I love this NFS even though, it is one of my favorites ❤
