A more private bamboo forest - as in a forest for yourself - can be found at Fushimi Inari. Just go up the normal way to the point where the torii covered path splits to up and down and instead of up, turn right, away from the tourists. Just follow the path circling the mountain through a small farmers village and some cemeteries and later up the mountain where you reconnect with the official route. Amazing and quiet, this alternative way up…

Augh. You're bringing back great memories of staying in our favorite corner of Kyoto and, quite possibly, the world. Managed to snag a budget stay at a hotel just around the corner from those woods; was only a 5-10 min walk into the heart of all that bamboo. I've never felt so relaxed and at peace at any time in my life. Added bonus: it was only a short train ride south to Suntory's Yamazaki Distillery...managed to sample whiskies there that have since absolutely exploded in cost, to the point where I'll likely never taste them again.

Stayed a few days in Kyoto in 2016 outside of the touristy areas (because cheaper), lots of boulevards, busy roads and not so charming apartment buidings. We ate for nearly nothing though on the last day when we finally were brave enough to enter the restaurant next door to our place. Nice video even if I expected you to go see the monkeys next to the bamboo forrest!

My experience in Kyoto has been a mixed bag. I visited the city 6 times and each time was different both in terms of of crowded it was and the overall feeling the place gave me. In spring of 2010, I made the mistake of going there during the peak sakura blossom period. My friend and I walked from Kyoto station all the way to Kiyomizu-dera once we saw how long the line of people waiting for the bus were. It was actually a good decision, since on our way there, we got to witness an actual complete grid-lock with people honking their car horn everywhere since they couldn't move at all. Once we got close to the temple, even walking on the sidewalks felt like doing the penguin shuffle. I got fed-up with being jammed in the crowd on the sidewalk and took a side street where there was no-one. We got incredibly lucky since we met a family also going to Kiyomizu-dera which showed us an other way to reach the temple. I visited in December 2012 and I got to see the Arashiyama illuminations. It was really worth it, but the place was so crowded that it kind of soured the experience. Other than that, I think it was the less crowded I ever got to experience Kyoto since my first visit in November 2008. I agree that that there are countless places to explore in that city and I get the feeling that most people have a checklist of the "must-see" places. Sometimes, you just have to take a side street to ditch the crowds and see things that are just as amazing and almost empty.
@travelswithblindcane3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the series! I'm a history nerd so Kyoto has always been a big draw for me, but walking around with you as you explored it made it feel a lot more accessible and welcoming. I worry sometimes about how accessible places will be, which I know I shouldn't with Japan. The bathroom tunes are pretty legit though, never even thought of that but it'd really help me if I was trying to find one in a hurry xD Thanks for letting us come along, makes me want to go explore out of Europe a lot more!

11:35 I took a little trolley train when leaving Arashiyama, I remember it acutely since it was this little train that slipped through people's back yards. Randen. It’s a little tram style railway like Toden or Enoden in the Tokyo area. The Arashiyama line goes from sort of the center of the city out to Arashiyama. I often take Randen out to Arashiyama because it’s a fun ride. It’s not fast though. There is also a JR line that goes out to Arashiyama from Kyoto Station, and a Hankyu line that goes there too.

I would have been totally sold on that camera equipment too! 💵 💴 Good buy! 📸 I do envy you seeing Kyoto that way!! 🇯🇵 The tourism is a turnoff for me too. It doesn’t pair well with them old fashioned rep, but I respect that it exists. Although their history of holding down merchants is another turn off. What strucks me the MOST in Kyoto is the transport, which is bad. The underground (subway) only has 2 lines, north to south and east to west. The alternative is to get buses or trains. Trains doesn't cover everywhere and the traffic on the roads during buses hours makes the buses so slow. At least this was my experience before the pandemic. I ended up just walking everywhere, average 20km per day. Which is not too diffiuclt as Kyoto is very flat and everywhere is very pretty.
