Yeah, that was the worst part, was the total lack of awareness of what actually polarizes the American people, or what either side of a civil war would look like. It's like it was directed by a Martian who is pretty sure he understands the US well, just a few more Bruce Willis movies and episodes of The View.

YES! Dang I basically just commented the same thing lol if they showed the reporters lying as much as they tell the truth and blatantly taking sides (like they do in real life), it would have actually been pretty groundbreaking. A good twist would have been if the president actually was a good man that didn't do what he was accused of, but then you see the press/reporters lying and getting the ire of the people against him. Could have been an allegory to real life, but instead Garland just made this with the intention of d-riding the media because they hate Donald.

To be fair, very early in the movie, they discuss how paper-thin the Texas-California alliance is, and they even expect them to go after each other once they take Washington and kill the President. It's just an alliance of convenience to take on the loyalist faction.
@williampoole1742
@williampoole1742 10 күн бұрын
Yea I actually don't have an issue with that, it does kinda seem laughable, but at the same time, there's both the aspect of "the enemy of my enemy is my friend", and then also the idea of politics being a circle and if two sides stray so far from eachother, then end up basically meeting on the other side of the circle and agreeing on major points. My complaint was the focus on the "benevolence" of journo's 🤢

He was talking about politics too and it was insufferable of course, but everybody was Trump bashing at the time so I assumed it was just a band wagon thing. But then, he made a long video where he explained why the game of thrones ending was good. Right then I knew his brain isn’t normal. Something is seriously wrong there if this guy genuinely believes the ending to game of thrones is good.

I thought the movie was pretty good. It wasnt about why the war started it was a backdrop to show what a modern civil war in america would look like on a small scale for day to day people. The journalists' story is them thinking they're very important but ultimately realizing that they are adrenaline junkies selfishly looking for their magnum opus. The journalists show themselves being cold-hearted in their chase for fame and recognition at the expense of the safety of other journalists and the soldiers they are attached to. The director also clearly didnt want to make the movie to be a part of the culture war which is why texas and california are allied. The idea being that despite huge political and cultural differences liberals and conservatives are ultimately both american and would ally to defeat a third more evil threat. It was purposeful, not some brit director not understanding american politics. The goal was to not piss either side off or label any specific group as the "bad guy" and yet everyone is mad that the group they dislike wasnt. Take the film for what it is, enjoy it or don't, but look Beyond the culture war and you'll probably enjoy it more.

But that's the thing, it didn't really show how everyday life was for the people because it focused on the journo's and their emo attitude on everything in the form of monologues for 75% of the movie. Every scene not focusing on them is actually fantastic in my opinion.

It’s so funny the reaction from people who went into this thinking it was going to be some sort of military fan fiction. It takes place during a fake conflict in a fake version of the US. The movie is about war journalism and the type of people who do it, not about Mark Abbots offensive in Tulsa. The movie seems like it’s written by someone with no clue about American political factions because the writer does not care about American political factions. It is not important and would probably be distracting to the story he is trying to tell. But hey, I didn’t love the movie either.

I agree the movie was boring in so far as it told a very specific story about the experience of journalism, like a story about journalists for journalists. HOWEVER THE THEME that is interesting is how war has a way of hardening hearts, and the main teenage girl this corrupted from being aghast at violence to recklessly and carelessly documenting violence which parallels all the violent participants we see during the movie. The movie is not political because it’s irrelevant to the story. The older woman is reminded of the time before the war and this causes her heart to soften and her final confrontation leading to her panic and death. So I think the theme is good but journalists don’t come across as sympathetic as much as foolhardy.

Was really disappointed in this movie, it was decent for what it was but it was marketed as a nonstop action packed commentary about the current state of the states, and instead it was a road trip movie with some action sprinkled throughout.

If it wasn't focused on journalists and constantly making them out to be the good guys (both in the movie and in real life), I would have loved it, but the journalist aspect genuinely took the movie down two pegs for me, I would have given it an 8, but I give it a 6. The combat and atmosphere was pretty fantastic I thought and they made it look great and wide-scale considering it's an A24 movie, which is considered a very low budget production company.

I thought some of the action and or battle scenes were intense and entertaining. But it just bothered me it had to be centered on journalists. I would if rather had it been from a regular soldiers perspective or other militants. Now journalists could've played a part in it for sure. I just didn't dig it being focused on them.

I hate to be that guy, but Kyle just doesnt get the movie. Its not about the specifics of the civil war itself, which was just the backdrop to the story. Its a movie about photojournalism, not even regualr journalism.

The red glasses scene was so dumb. His character was obviously written and even dressed by a liberal who's afraid of right wing militias, but doesn't understand them at all. In addition, they didn't even have the balls to commit to the "conservatives bad" premise, even though that was obviously the subtext. Seriously, the costumer designer must have gone to one local airsoft event for research.

All the trailers made it seem like a sick war movie shot from the perspective of a journalist, but all those trailers were the only 3 minutes of action in the entire movie and it was at the very end. What the movie actually was, was Hollywood saying "veterans aren't heros, they are bad guys. Journalists are the real heros in war". The movie would've ended when they got caught by fat Matt daemon. He wouldn't have let them get away the way they did
