He absolutely is. At least for me I dropped the bike in the course 4-5 times doing slow speed stuff. Been riding for 5 months and I've dropped my bike once in a parking lot, no damage it was a slow drop. It's going to be really really rough going far distance with no experience.

Sv-650 is an excellent choice. Some tips. -Go to an empty parking lot and practice driving around in loops and stuff. Practice dipping into quick turns and using the clutch to steadilynapply more power to the rear wheel which straightens the bike up. Its one fluid motion though. You go and dip to the left or right, the front wheel falls over into the grove and the bike starts to tip over more and more, and the way you stop the tipping is by giving it a little more clutch, and gas so it slightly accelerates a bit, and shifts the weight toward the back. Get good at these slow speed quick turns and you won't drop your bike hardly ever. -Get a shop to put on some sliders if you don't want to ding it up. -Don't use your front brake until you learn to use 100% of the rear brake, don't hit the front brake hard when you are turning, going slow, etc. Just pretend its not there unless you want to just feather it a little bit when you are stopping hard. Try to stay in the right gear, and use engine braking. Especially in town. On a motorcycle mid range rpms are optimal most of the time unlike the fuel efficient heads and cams of a car engine. The engine is balanced to run high rpms. -Take your time and be careful. Stay out of town and parking lots for a few days. Don't be scared to put that foot down if you fuck up and accidently use your front brake too hard while going slow and drop the bike as all new riders do. Don't be a nerd, put that foot down and catch yourself. The bike isn't gonna hurt you real bad at slow speeds unless you are a retard. Just keep your feet out when you need it and don't use that front brake much, the front brake is for babying and petting, and emergency stops in straight lines. -The back brake makes the bike want to slide outward with momentum, and the front brake makes the bike want to stand up by tilting the front forks forward and pushing up on the bike, don't ever freak out and slam your brakes. Try to medium ease on your brakes while you commit to the turn, learn not to go too fast, the bike is very capable under light braking. If you are upright, you can use alot of front brake, but its a dangerous addiction. Some people only use their front brake because it has a lot of power, but its a worse way to ride. Back brake is primary. -just be careful and learn at your own pace. It takes a few years to get to be a comfortable rider, and develop an intuition. Don't ever try to keep up with other people, especially not when you are new. -If you get good the bike is an extension of your body and mind. You will be very safe, fast, having fun. Stick with it a while and you will get much more comfortable after a few months. -intermediate tip, Practice spinning out, and light drifting, on dirtroads every now and then, just light throttle in mostly straight lines. It helps you learn how a bike works on dirt and when the tire starts skidding. If you get that bit of experience it can help you be much safer and more confident. You can end up off the blacktop sometimes when you really fuck up. Just don't get cocky drifting a bike because that bitch will buck you off with a 420 lb death wobble. -Don't drink and drive it or take xanex and shit like that while you are riding it, or you will die. -The clutch is the most important thing on the bike. Don't be scared at all of burning up the clutch(within reason) use it and become a master of the clutch, adjust where there is no tension on the cable. The clutch does everything all the other stuff on your bike does if you learn to use it. The only time you shouldn't be using your clutch is when you are out of second or third gear. -Keep and eye out behind you and in your mirrors, don't be scared to dip out or run a rednlight if you need to, you are way faster then pretty much every car you are gonna see unless its like super badass. On a bike you can always disappear and dip off. Take advantage of this sometimes. You don't have to wait on a cop either unless he turns on his lights and you are aware that he is trying to detain you. Don't be scared to take off to get away from people sometimes, stay safe but more importantly have fun dude!

You’re right about a lot of stuff besides the rear brake. You only use the back brakes if you don’t know how to properly use the front. You can always slow down with the front with the right touch even after turning the bike into a corner to scrub speed off. Experts used to teach to use the rear to trail brake but with proper use of the front you don’t even need the rear. You must always be aware of your lean angle relative to how much pressure you can apply to the brakes. Also when slowing before your corner entry the front brakes compress the front forks setting you up to have more stable control for counter steering and throughout the turn in general. You must respect the front brake but do not fear it.

Get a good snug, light helmet yeah. Its an investment. Look up Ece and DOT on helmets by the way PKA guys, DOT standards arnt so great. Also Kyle, motorcycling fatigues the brain way more than a car by the way so you will be way more tired alot faster riding long distance

My first motorcycle at 18 years old. no safety course. was a 2009 Kawasaki 250. My yearly liability was $75. Every other bike I owned and had liability on was under $150 a year. The exception/highest was a 1998 CBR 600 F3 that I had. I believe it was a bit higher than 150 a year. I am now on a 2019 Harley 48. Full coverage. I am looking at a little less than 900 a year. I think this is quite normal for full insurance plus some additional coverage included at 21 years old. However, I paid for this policy when I was 20. I am expecting a big drop going into next year. I do mine by the year. I have never taken the safety course.

I am in europe and my first bike that i got on my a1 license was a 1999 aprilia rs125 and stock it was restricted to 15hp but if you asked the dealer they would give you a manual on how to derestrict it (powervalve, cdi, 34mm carb) which got it up to ~33hp and it was a blast to ride! And with my local weather consisting of 2 weeks of semi nice weather and then 2 weeks of downpour i had plenty of time to maintain it. I had some problems along the way, like instantanious misplaced piston porting(blowing a huge hole in the piston) but all in all i would definetly recommend a 125cc 2 stroke to any european teen with an interest in speed and wrenching

Because putting a 16 year old on anything more than a 125cc would be dangerous, because let's face it.. 16 year olds aren't the smartest of people when it comes to life altering decisions. I was a menace on my bike spending most of my time doubling the speedlimit with 34hp, if i had anything faster i probably wouldn't even be here to tell you about my journey.

Look at the Triumph Tiger, start at $12,000. Really nice, good features and value, triple engine, refined, more offroad capable, can carry luggage. Don't get your gear and accessories from the dealer. Vstrom meh but is alright, more just utilitarian for my taste, sv650 is cool, simple, refined, very reliable, more of an around town bike.
