That is a funny story. It takes me back to a similar incident when I was a young teen and cracked a catcher in the back of the head with my follow through after a nice hit, realizing that everyone was running towards home plate to help the unconscious player while I decided to stop and wait at second, before finally realizing that the game was pretty much over, and that I should at least pretend to be as interested as everyone was in the guy's well being. Good stuff.

In my experience i have friends who make "jokes" about athletes but it's always passive aggressive, intended to dismiss, or make themselves feel like they're better or can do the same. Me and my Dad went to a car dealership and we both happened to be wearing hats from the same team. Same here at age 6 while in PeeWee league. It took me yrs before I would even attempt to catch a 16 inch softball on the fly because I got beaned by a league ball and was afraid. My dad would try and play catch with me and I'd just let them bounce or sail on by. He'd get so mad.. But then when I was about 11 at school recess playing softball, the teacher yelled 'head's up' and the ball was coming straight for me. There was no time to dodge it. I put my hands up and squinted my eyes.. and I caught it clean. From that day on I was a great outfielder. That fear was broken!
