Lonzo Ball has been shooting a lot better recently, having apparently overcome his initial three point shooting struggles. Through the ups and downs of Lonzo's season, one other rookie laker has been performing at an elite level. That Laker is Kyle Kuzma, the unheralded three-year college player out of Utah who is still 22 years old. Kuzma has near perfect mechanics, often compared to those of Klay Thompson, and in this video, I detail what exactly is allowing "Kuz "to perform at such a high level on the court in Los Angeles...

Thanks for another great video. Lots think about here. Big men as shooters, more details about release timing, how the meaning of 'set point' has evolved, and that interesting breakdown of joint alignment with the interesting comparison with Steph Curry, bringing in the thumb flick and explaining how it helps his shot. I'm consistently impressed how you continue to find new angles and new examples to bring up new perspectives on how NBA players shoot and why, and showing the rest of us how we can learn from then. Your videos also help make it clear how shooting techniques are constantly evolving. Keep it up please!

It is so true that the thumbflick is use to change the angle of the shot ,not adding some force on the shot but only correcting the angle and it works for me , i likee this video very much

Hey scot you probably knew this but the reason why you feel more power after using a hop instead of a one two step is because you land and start the jump on the balls of your feet. When you use the one two, players tend to shoot out of a flat footed stance which does drain some power from their shot. If you shoot from the balls of your feet though, your joints act like a springboard that adds power to your shot. Just sharing some information that might be useful. Love the content learned a lot from it please keep up the good work!🔥🔥🔥

This is an old video, so no one will probably see this, but on the subject of Kyle Kuzma's "hop" technique off the catch on his jump shot, I myself hop, and for me the reason for this is two fold. To catch rhythm as by the time my feet hit the floor I'm in a dipping motion which adds some power to my shot, and the other because this motion a lot of the time causes the defense to panic and try to step up making it easier to blow by as the defenders coming forward making it harder for them to recover. I don't have very great handles so ankle breakers are incredibly rare for me (sadly, I'm a big fan of em too), but I've caused a lot of people to fall trying to recover just off of this motion.

finally someone who knows what Curry does... well other coaches sometimes think I am crazy to teach thumb flick, but there are some players who need that.. good video :) p.s. I think Harden, Klay, maybe Kuzma too, use some of the thumb flick motion too, but just little bit, not so much as Curry and others, but for the same reason, for rotation, but because they have this kind of "in line with shoulder" they need less rotation and less thumb flick :) but they have some movement in there thumbs :)

I have a question, when you said that steph curry rotates the ball in between his set point and realize, does it come natural for him to do that or has he trained himself to do that?
@ScotShotBasketball
@ScotShotBasketball 6 жыл бұрын
I’d say 99% it comes naturally, given that Curry can’t even describe basic things that he does himself. There’s very little chance that he’s aware of this

@ScotShotBasketball
@ScotShotBasketball 6 жыл бұрын
That’s a two motion shot... if it works for you and you don’t feel like you’re struggling to shoot threes, then don’t change it. If you feel like it’s hard to shoot from deep then I’d recommend switching to a one motion shot yes.

At around 4:20 you say "For some people, it is simply unrealistic to demand that their 3 major arm joints be in the same vertical plane at their set point...". I disagree. Have you heard of "the turn"? The turn is a slight rotation of the body relative to the ring for a shooting action, that aligns the arm (and hip) joints vertically. Check out the Pro-shot Shooting system channel, that's where I first saw it. Additionally, at 1:34, you say that "...It appears as if their bodies are simply floating forward through the air." While you aren't wrong there, It is important to see that their bodies aren't vertical throughout the jumpshot - their legs move forward more than their shoulders/chest, and you can see this as they land at an angle. This is has been called the "sweep and sway", and is critical for ensuring the shoulders and chest are relaxed throughout the jumpshot.

This video is confusing. Kuzma's joints ARE NOT in the same VERTICAL plane. The redline drawn clearly shows this.
@ScotShotBasketball
@ScotShotBasketball 6 жыл бұрын
Not in the same vertical plane, yes but pretty close. The actual point of that whole section is that his release fingers are under the middle of the ball, whereas people with flared elbows like curry have their hands on the side of the ball
@cmack17
@cmack17 6 жыл бұрын
Scot Shot Basketball Maybe this is a symantic issue. Curry's elbow does not appear to be flared to me. I think the key points from your video are that: 1. Keeping the ball straight is the most critical issue. 2. Your specific bio-mechcanics will dictate the best position to do this consistently.
