In this video I break down the likely second most important basketball shooting technique development of the past decade - the low set point (behind only early release timing). I focus on the reason why a low set point puts your arm and shoulder in optimal positions to transfer power to the ball during the pushing phase of the shot. If you haven't guessed it, I'm a proponent of players, especially smaller (below 6'5'') wings and guards, utilizing the low set point to maximize their basketball shooting range. The basic principles do, however, transfer to larger players too.

One thing that should be mentioned is a lot of the small guards with low set points in the nba don't really shoot midrange shots. It is hard to have a midrange game when you shoot one motion with a low set point because things are much more congested within the 3 point line. Steph Curry is a perfect example. When he gets inside 15 feet he will almost always shoot a floater rather than shoot a jumpshot. I have personally struggled with this because I've always been an excellent shooter (2 motion, eye level set point) and seeing the new wave of nba guards made me want to change my shot to emulate them so that's what I did. It did give me better range and I could hit very deep shots with pretty good consistency but the rest of my game suffered. So eventually I switched back and it honestly feels much better (for me). All this to say I don't think that shooting one motion with a low set point is universally better for smaller players, I think it really depends on how you play.

Just do both fam. When shooting a jump shot, I release higher and a little bit later as well as having slightly less arch. Then I just do the opposite from 3
@isplash3s998
@isplash3s998 5 жыл бұрын
I have multiple shots XD, my 3 is a high arc unblockable 1 motion shot like curry, and when contested from mid I hang in the air with the ball on top of my forehead, but yeah is kinda hard to come off a screen and shoot a one motion mid, so I do mostly floaters
@hussainshahabuddin1423
@hussainshahabuddin1423 5 жыл бұрын
I just emulate what Kyrie does. From long 2/three point range and beyond, he has pretty much the same set point as Steph curry. He releases the ball a bit slower but that’s because he elevates slower and gets into his shooting motion slower for more consistency. But he also has a killer midrange game. Why is that so? That’s because in the midrange he puts the ball above his head and will often fadeaway or lean to buy space/time. That’s the optimal way to have range and not sacrifice your midrange game at the same time.

High set points are better for midrange because the energy for ur jump does not transfer into the shot, so it doesn’t overpower it. Low set points are great for long range because the energy from the driving force of the jump is transferred directly to the shot kind of like a box using his left for a punch.

@watchnofacee
@watchnofacee 5 жыл бұрын
Xylon Santos Theres no breakdown the man has a classic text book proper Jumpshot. I think with Luka it’s more innate ability that makes him knock down deep shots. But this dudes theory isn’t bad but “Logo range” can be attained is which ever way. It all depends on the shooter not the set point. Kobe, RayRay, Tmac, VC, Arenas, Harden & Luka all shoot with a High set point jumper and have deep range.
@thegoon3088
@thegoon3088 4 жыл бұрын
@@watchnofacee You're gonna have a realllyyy hard time having consistent logo range 3's with a high set point if you're 6 feet or under. Kobe, Ray Ray tmac etc etc all those were 6'4" or taller, they're big strong dudes. If you're 6 foot and skinny you should shoot 3's with single motion/low set point. That being Iverson had the same set point as kobe but iverson had crazy vert so he was able to generate mad power from his legs but yea he was more a mid range shooter and rarely ever shot threes from behind the 3 point line

Great video! Emphasis a lot of technique which is very important and effective when learned at a young age. I'm a 42 year old recreational baller who has a high set point. But since I'm not gifted with strength to launch from deep, adjusting to a lower set point with a quick release will be very effective once mastered.

Also I feel a higher set point is more consistent because you have less motion which gives you less left to right movement. Its shorter movement which allows you too keep the ball on track and its more natural feeling. I use both a low to mid and high set point in my game. My 3’s are not the best but I can knock them down especially when they are uncontested, my midrange is excellent.

You're right, nba players with low set point have no problem getting blocked because they get the shot off really quick, this is also why their shots are so effective from deep, by getting the shot off quick off the pass, you're actually transferring some of the energy/momentum from the pass into the shot, which helps tremendously.

Amazing video.. i'm 6"0 and skinny and had eye level set point this summer, my shot was kinda slow and i could shoot amazing from mid range and i hit fadeaways and contested shots at a high rate... but my 3 point shot was awful.. barely hit them and it made my shot inconsistent.. now my set point is nose or almost mouth level and it feels fluid and consistent.. i shoot 3's with ease because i don't have to use as much power from my legs anymore.. the only downside is that my mid range game is off a little because i used to shoot contested shots but now i have to practice my shot speed rather than my elevation.. some say have 2 set points but i find it inconsistent.. in conclusion this video helped me understand that i shouldn't copy tall athletes' jumpshots because you should have your jumpshot constructed for YOUR BODY TYPE. I shot better this whole month better with a lower set point rather than those three months with a higher set point.. hopefully more people find this channel and subscribe because you break down shooting to a science!❤️✌️

So one thing I’m personally curious about Scot is the nature of Trae Young’s guide hand. I noticed that on his release he tucks in his thumb in a way that’s also different from how Steph does it. How does that influence his shot? I heard you talk about it in one of your videos but I still don’t fully understand the concept. Secondly, I noticed that his guide elbow flares to the side when he shoots, is that something that should be corrected?
