2024 writeup:
Yeah, as it says up there, these are some leftovers I got the sudden impulse to release one hot summer's day. All of my albums have the same process: write a TON of songs and then pick out the best ones. With the 2017 SA/M sessions, because that's what everybody calls em, I noticed a theme was starting to develop so I pursued it. That became Margaux. Selfish Animal is what's leftover from those sessions, the stuff that was really good and deserved to be heard but just didn't fit. So Displaced is the leftovers of the leftovers. I love all these songs, and honestly, I love everything I put vocals on, which means there's another 44 tracks sitting here unreleased from this time I still have affection for. Time will tell if those tracks ever emerge.
The artwork is a picture I took at an arcade in one of those japanese photobooths. I just walked into it by myself for no reason and it started taking pictures, either it was bugged out, or somebody paid for it and then walked out before using it. I wanted to capture this peculiar event so I took a picture of it. Clearly I am too tall for japanese sensibilities. The other girls in there are the built in girls. I still have the printed out photostrips! I typed in "Goku" and then put a bunch of random stickers that said Goku all over the photos with the photobooths editor. You can look at them if you download the album off Bandcamp!
Give Me a Window. I really don't know how to play guitar like that but every once in a while i can write something realllll funky. Just a real fun song to me, which goes against the devastated emotions on the SA album. Man, SA is NOT a good acronym. The subject matter came about from my drives through Los Angeles that happen every once in a while. I live in southern California, about a half hour from downtown LA, and I end up going over there for one reason or another on occasion. I remember seeing those tall buildings, and just imagining all of the people behind each of those windows. I drove by a music company or two, and just pictured all of the people behind those windows, rejecting me or overlooking me, ignoring me. To give me a window is to give me time. Give me just a smidge of attention. Or better yet, gimme an office lol
Grease for You. More Funk! I think all this stuff was in open C, the Devin Townsend tuning. I genuinely have no idea how to play it right now, but that chorus riff is sooo nice. As for the meaning of the song... well... you know what it's about. This coulda been the theme song of those astronauts. LMAO that's such a crazy thing to call yourself. I was never addicted but I did successfully stop. The P aspect, that is. That's all I'll say about that.
You're Trapped. This song is OLD! this beat has like 8 different versions dating back to 2013. It's full of really funny production habits I had when I first started using FL Studio, like throwing Hardcore on an 808 soundfont. All of the synths are Sytrus except for the "whitewashed" vocoder thing, which is Predator. That's a preset I made of my voice in like 2013.
The "You seem attached a whole lot, yeah caught, thought I forgot? That phone you bought is a passage to mind rot" lyric here is actually from like 2014, recorded on my AT2020 microphone instead of my usual SM7B. I just realllly liked my delivery even though its a little bit jumbled at the end and didn't want to redo it. Had to deess it extra hard though.
