Cowboy Junkies Margo Timmins on Death, Loss, Nature, and the Sharon sessions
Cowboy Junkies’ Margo Timmins joins Kyle Meredith to talk about the band’s new LP, Such Ferocious Beauty, and how it tells the story of dealing with their father’s death after living with dementia. The lead singer details how she finds her way into the songs after brother and bandleader Michael Timmins write the songs, as well as their shared memories, the role nature plays in the LP, the finality of death, and the fear and dread that comes from watching too much television and news. On the less morbid side, Timmins also talks about the band’s long lost album, Sharon, which was just released after over 30 years in the vault, and what else might still be waiting to eventually see the light of day.

What a joy listening to you and Margo going over the makeup or nature of these songs. I, only recently, came across Cowboy Junkies from watching a video of them performing on the Tonight Show in 1989. I was awe struck by their version of Sweet Jane and have been barnstorming their videos. And have so, fallen in love with Ms. Timmins. I love her creations and interpretation of her songs. And now listening to her has only reinforced my deep affection for her as a person and as a special artist. God's speed Margo!

One of the best interviews I've heard. Margo and the band seem to be a a breath of fresh air among all the junk that's out there. Perhaps it's because they face life rather than to try making it fit somebody else's picture? I remember a line from Yoko Ono about John or was it John? Anyway the line was "He tried to face reality." I think that appears to be much or what the Cowboy Junkies do, which BTW,, sometimes makes it hard, for me, to face some of the music. During the interview, she laughs a lot. Not big HAW HAWs! but seems like a way to deal with the harder aspects of life, like losing your family and friends and that's what I do with music - try to bring out a smile at a time when I might need it.
