Lovebites recently played a fan appreciation show thats stripped down in a small club (show in black dresses) and also any song on the "Live From Abyss" studio session DVD (recommend "Scream For Me") shows they don't need a big production. If Kyle were ever to return I recommend playing a performance from one of those. Also, maybe providing some background on these members like Haruna and Miho brsnching off from a successful band ro form Lovebites, Miyako being a classically trained pianist since age 4 then being self taught on guitar at 18, Midori also being a late bloomer on guitar starting around 20, Fami being a bass prodigy with her own channel with hundreds of thousands followers at 16 before joining, and Asami's history as an R&B singer before Lovebites. Theres nothing manufactured and it hasn't been an easy road for Lovebites. You can still find videos of them playing small clubs and festivals as they slowly grew a following. Its not even like they're flowing in cash now, Miyako recently did a video where wanted a limited Gibson Flying V but had anxiety over getting approved for financing (she got it). The point being, there's nothing manufactured about Lovebites, they're all a bunch of elite musicans who happen to be kindred spirits that love playing metal. Same can also be said for Nemophila.

I know it is easy for a Westerner to think as Kyle does - that a Japanese band that consists of five elite level women, all in the same band is hard to imagine as being real, especially knowing the history of Baby Metal's formation. I mean LOVEBITES is unbelievable when you think about how good they are and how rare that is to see in the West. But Joel, make sure your guests know that LOVEBITES is 100% organic. Lovebites was put together by the band members themselves - specifically Miho and Haruna. The two of them met while playing in a former band named Destrose. Once that band broke up, Miho asked Haruna to join her in forming a new band. They recruited Midori and Miyako who they were previously acquainted with and then added Asami after she auditioned for the band. The five of them spent several years building up a name for themselves, playing in small venues until they grew larger and larger to what you see now. It truly is an amazing story of talent and determination to be the best there is - very similar to Iron Maiden.

100% agree here!! Thank you for mentioning Destrose family tree here. Captain Mina doesn't get the credit she deserves. For not only being among Japan's brilliant female guitartsts & a gifted song writer but in helping so many of them get their start. Lovebites, Nemophila, Mary's Blood, Mardelas, Aldious, all being former members. Babymetal should be given credit for their approach into no mans land & brecking the 4th Metal wall. Personally, i think they have grown into their own now. However, it is important that guests understand that Japan's metal scene in fact is quit diverse and not all comes from an Idol backgrounds. Yes, Band-Maid does have some with Miku having been an Idol herself as an exampe. However, she eventually felt that path was a dead end & thankfully got out. Even Koba-Metal was smart enough to realize Su-Metal's talents would have been wasted as an idol. However, dont assume that meant things were easy. Miku spent years getting Band-Maid off the ground. Having her idol connections helped get them a contract. However, they nearly broke up on a few occasions like many bands. Almost were dropped by their label. They struggled for years just to find an auidence and then Thrill happened & Babymetal blew up & the J-Metal Industry was turned on it's head. I discovered Band-Maid through Babymetal's Mikio Fujioka. Which had appeared in a photo op with Band-Maid drummer Akane. They apparently had been friends for some time and so discovering them started my journey into the vast amazing world of Japanese Metal. I would be curious how guests might now react to someone like X-Japan. Without context i fell might be just as misinformed as this guest was. :/

No, Lovebites is not a managed thing. They do it all by themselves when it comes to arrangements. The lasers and so on is probably produced by a separate group. But the music is them. I know that they had some help in the beginning with song writing. But today, it is all theirs. And regarding backing track. This is 99% live. They do have backing tracks. Not for this song though, I would assume. It is enough "noise" as it is. There might be some piano or synth stuff and occasionally layering of singing in some songs. But, mostly it is live.

We don't get to see everything that goes on behind the scenes, but I know there is a lot going on. Kyle recognized it right away. He knows what it takes to operate at this level.
@MaartenT Жыл бұрын
Mao wrote half of their songs though and seems to be involved a lot in their music in general, I would say they are a bit of both. And I think he mostly means how they came together, which I don't know as a casual fan, I assume some of the Wolfpack knows about that? I know Miho and Haruna came out of Destrose, but I don't know how they met the others, especially Asami. Also I know enough about other Japanese bands nowadays to know that there is a good chance they are either fully manufactured (eg. Lonesome_Blue and possibly East Of Eden, not talking about the groups in J-Pop or the Idols) or partially manufactured/managed (I love both bands, but Nemophila who basically use a writer for most of their stuff, or Band-Maid who have a somewhat dubious background story and Saiki was certainly brought in by management + they did use writers in the past), but they can also be fully independent/unmanaged at first (Unlucky Morpheus are still independent and there are a bunch of bands that originally started from school clubs). So it depends how you see "managed", most of them are not like the J-Pop/K-Pop groups, but they are also not like some of the Western bands who basically do everything themselves (Japan has these as well, but seems a bit more managed overall from my point of view). So I have a feeling Lovebites is in the middle catagory, nothing wrong with that either. I was pretty negative on bands not writing their own music when I started getting into these Japanese bands, but I don't think it's that big of a deal any more. There is no way that bands like Lovebites, Nemophila and Band-Maid as well when they got pre-written music don't add their own touches to it both musically and in production. Honestly, while I personally prefer less produced music, there is some really good very produced music in the Japanese music industry. I am typically not a fan of pop, but I do enjoy Zutomayo (J-Pop/Pop Rock) and Atarashii Gakko (J-Pop/close to Idol/Dance group) as well and while both of them had a more independent (Zutomayo) or schooltype backstory (Atarashii Gakko), they are very managed nowadays and that's ok.

@@outwest1014 Mao is credited for arrangements as well at least on most of the tracks of their latest album, but I am pretty sure on most of their music and is credited as (co-)writer on half of their songs. He has writing credits on 6 of the tracks of Judgment Day and 3 of them have him as the only writer, I think he does way more than most people think he does. Not to discredit the band at all, I think they are really good at what they do and I am sure they have plenty of input as Victor and Mao seem to respect them a lot, but I was surprised when I checked the credits on the albums a while ago with how much Mao is credited on.

Many of the Japanese rock and metal bands formed organically. Lovebites and Band-Maid formed completely organically, along with several other acts. Babymetal and Ladybaby were completely corporate (though I think later incarnations of Ladybaby may have been less so). Nemophila is hybrid of corporate and organic, as they were originally conceived as a Mayu solo project, and her management or label found the other members as session musicians, but once they started working together, they decided to form a whole band on their own.
@ghosface353 Жыл бұрын
Ladybaby did have auditions for generation 4. But then you have an idol group like Maze, that changed label and had to change name, but all members are the same as Miscast, so that feels a lot more organic. But they do get help from Visual kei veterans on their songs, but usually different memembers on each song. It was interesting that East of Eden also get help on their music from Mao, and they get help from others to write lyrics, but they are still credit on music and arrangement. But that is how most music works. Like Bring Me The Horizon get currently a lot of help from different producers on their new music.

Every time for LOVEBITES, I am thankful to your gerat intruduction to the great guys in the music industry! I hope you respond immediate to the guest's questions on some LOVEBITES basics.Hope this helps! 1) LOVEBITES has started from two young females (original bassist MIHO and drummer Haruna) from their strong “BELIEF” that female can create and perform heavy metal that are dominated by males. So this is definitely NOT a band that was created by some music company who thinks female metal band is a great sell and can make money. NONO 2) Organic..They write lyrics, compose, arrange and perform. There would be NO other organic operation in the music world! 3) The lead singer ASAMI used to be a ballerina and had some R&B experience.She writes most of the lyrics and does some composition. She is a very positive minded person, and that is clearly reflected on her lyrics. 4) One of the guitarists Miyako(black long hair) used to play classic piano and has started guitar when she was around 18 years old as she wanted to try other musical instrument. She composes and arranges. Her piano on stage is classic panist level, without any question. 5) The other lead guitarist Midori is a top graduate of ESP's music school. She composes and arrange.The ultimate shredder! 6) The new bassist Fami was very famous in her bass play in her high school, and has joined LOVEBITES from the last year. She also composes, but for LOVEBITES not yet. 7) The drummer Harina is, as I mentioned, one of the founder and keeps 16 beat all across near 2 hour concert. 8) Backing track; Yes they use backing track ONLY for the part that does NOT exist on stage and is necessary. That means there is NO singing, guitar, bass nor drumming backing track. The backing track is mostly for the keyboards. So what they perform on stage in singing and on the intruments are directly reflected on the sounds to our ears thru amplifier etc. 9) Japanese audiences; They love to be some part of the music in concerts and try to suport the performers on site as their good tradition, though I admit Asami is a perfect "stage general", for whom I am willingly tonfollow any commands from her, LOL Love LOVEBITES! Anybody, please feel free to addthing you feel like!!

Hey Joel, LOVEBITES are a real band founded by ex-bassist Miho und drummer Haruna. Both found the other members (or already knew them from the scene) and put the band together. They write their own music (sometimes with co-writer Mao). The arrangements of their songs is all done by themselves. Miyako is a world class talent in composing and arranging music. Asami the singer writes the lyrics. Also especially Miyako is quite a sound-nerd. She modifies some of her guitars by herself and is very adventurous in putting her gear together. The overall sound that they create is heavily influenced by themselves. By the way, Miyako also produced and recorded her piano solo EP all by herself … Please give your guests these informations when they doubt the authenticity of LOVEBITES! P.S. LOVEBITES already have the recognition of famous bands and musicians in their genre. And they will play at some of the largest and most established metal festivals (up to 60k spectators) in Europe next year, partially on main stage.

Just had to tell him that the song was composed by the guitarist, Miyako, and the vocalist, Asami, with lyrics by Asami. To me, no matter how a band starts (Lovebites formation was not unusual for known musicians from prior bands), if a band writes their own music, they are as organic as it gets.
@ChuckJansenII Жыл бұрын
Everything about Lovebites was put together by the girls. They came up with the idea to wear the dresses because they consider themselves ladies and the dresses are white so they are easier to see on stage since the girls are around 5' tall. Miyako was the tallest at 5'3" (?) until new bassist Fami came along and she seems to be about 5'6". Haruna (drums) is the shortest at 4'9" I believe. They do get input from Mao, former Light Bringer Keyboard player who does co-write some of the music with either Miho (founder, ex-Bass) and now Asami (vocals). They are a live band but do use some piano and keyboard backing tracks when Miyako is playing guitar with Midori. Same with Band-Maid. Miku made up the whole maid concept. I think in Japan most of the hard rock and metal bands are organic. For instance, with Band-Maid, Miku was with a label. She wrote out the made concept, presented it to the label and they told her to run with it. They placed ads but she found Mincho, Mincho worked with Gorilla who had a ninja maid assassin bass player in her music school. I'm thinking Saiki answered a later ad when it was decided Miku's voice didn't have enough oomf. For the first few album, Band-Maid did not write their own songs. Kanami kept writing with encouragement for Saiki despite our Mincho being constantly rejected. Eventually the label got smart and let Band-Maid write their own songs. The only group I know that was not a product of the girls is Babymetal. They were manufactured by Kobametal. J-Pop idol groups might be more manufactured and that means more managed. But groups like Lovebites have a lot of creative control over music, costumes and their own gear. Not only that, all of these bands are as hard working as any musicians I have ever seen. Maybe even more so. That's how they reach such heights becoming world class musicians and performers. I have seen Miyako practice. She was trying to learn The Camping Song on piano. La Campanella by Franz Liszt requires a big hand and Miyako has small hands. Her reach was a problem. Watching her overcome her small hands as she missed notes, hit wrong notes and generally messed up over and over until she could play it slow. Then she would work on speed. Mistakes and missed notes. She kept at it until she was hitting all the notes. Each run through she would perfect then speed up. There is a reason why these girls are so damned good. So damned extraordinary.

Great info! Actually Saiki was already signed to Miku's agency. Either the music division - Platinum Passport or the parent company - Platinum Production, as she had acting training. Miku was listening to demo tapes. I like to believe that YUI MIZUNO came up with the concepts for both Sakura Gakuin and BABYMETAL because she really wanted to be a Karen Girl. Probably not true but I can cite vague circumstancial evidence that makes it slightly plausible.

@@jefffromchicago6321 Thank you for the info on Saiki. Still like how Pigeon withheld info about maid uniforms from Saiki until she agreed to join. As 'Psycho' puts it, "This is how I was deceived by a Pigeon." They have a friendly rivalry they play off of. But they are great friends. Miku loves horses and Saiki loves betting. They attend horse races together. I do believe Miku owns a race horse and would like to ride it in a race. Can you see a Pigeon riding a horse in race to victory? Kobametal put the idea of Babymetal together and built it around Su. When Yui and Moa joined Sakura Gakuin and said they wanted to do Heavy Metal he had his trio. What I would like to know is if Su, Yui and Moa had any input into the costumes or not. Yes, Yui was a huge fan girl of Su and Karen's Girls. Yui and Moa were in another sub unit called Twinklestars part of Baton Club.

LBs is an organic band. It is common in Japan to have conglomerate ran factory shows invented and decided upon by committees. It is why I can't stomach babymetal because that is exactly what that show is, it is a show and has nothing to do with the philosophy of a band or bandmates or anything of the kind. It did one thing though, got the western world looking east to find out what great bands are actually doing and playing in Japan.

This was another interesting video. Thank you. It is not only in Japan that there is some kind of major-label management, unless you are an indie. Since the days of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, the work of business 'adults' Epstein and Murry Wilson outside the band members has enabled them to release records and bring their music to a wider audience. So if you bring in the concept of 'organic' with regard to commercial music, you might want to think about applying it to music outside of Japan.

It is easy to imagine what this man felt. Because anyone who understands music and has the relevant knowledge and experience, meeting with Lovebites, has been through something similar. Shock, then disbelief and doubt that such a thing is possible, and finally acceptance and admiration. Judging by this video, the second part of Knockin' at Heaven's Gate will be the same quality as the first. And I do not know a better live release, in the rock and metal genre, than Knockin' at Heaven's Gate. And not only in terms of content (music and performance), but also in terms of sound, light, camera work, and installation. I've watched this blu-ray many times already, but it still amazes me every time. It's unbelievable how good he is. I must say that in terms of expression and emotions, it is similar to Battle in the East 2018, but otherwise it is the next level. From a musical point of view, is very good blu-ray Dream Theater. Lovebites are close to them, but have already bypassed them in terms of entertainment. I've come across several blu-ray Babymetal (there are about twenty of them in total), but there's nothing to look at, it's not interesting at all. Almost all the time they show three dancing and singing girls and very rarely musicians.

I guess it depends on what you classify as musician? Ozzy doesn’t play an instrument other then a Harmonica. Does that make him any less of a musician? Su-Metal actually plays the piano. Moa has played guitar for years. It's their management that choices not to focus on that aspect. Ladies are just as professional as any artist or musician touring today. The fact you say just see three dacing and singing ladies is kinda an insult as a lot of artists fit that description. I wasn't gifted with any musical talent as i am just a sound engineer but i am still a professional in my field. Ladies didn't last for 13 years without having something to offer here either. Singing and dancing is beyond my talent. I can do neither and i definitely cannot do it at the level they do & still be standing while still managing to put out an amazing vocal performance. If you think that is so f*** easy you try it once. Not trying to be an ass here but this just rubbed me the wrong way. :/

@@BlazinNSoul Well, if the Black Sabbath concert release showed only Ozzy singing and sometimes playing the harmonica, and did not show the guitarist, bass and drums, I would not be interested either. I will say more, in this case, I would choose Babymetal from these two.) But at the same time, even if Su-Metal and Moa were the best guitarists and pianists in the world, it would not add to my interest in their singing and dancing. Sorry.

@@dymyavalor6135 It's important to note here, while Kami Band is an important part of Babymetal's success in the beginning. It is foolish to believe they alone are the reason for it. I get the impression you feel the band doesn't or hasn't gotten enough recognition. Well then, you haven't been following the band much. BOH from Kami East was recently married. Taka is touring with a big Chinese artist & Hideki is touring with a huge Japanese rock band. Takayoshi Ohmura has been experiencing some health issues, unfortunately. There are reasons why they haven't been as visible lately. As much as i respect the Kami band. These ladies have done their due diligence as well. Furthermore, The Kami Band didn't appear until 2012 for LEGEND. A full 2 f**** years or so after Babymetal was formed, so context is important here. _______________________________________________ It wasn't until the "2013 Babymetal Death Match Tour." Which were 4 shows in Tokyo and Osaka. Which was to prepare for bigger shows along with Budokan, and the 2014 World Tour. In which Kami became a permanent addition at that time. Keep in mind Kami West swaps out with Kami East on rotation. Whenever their other commitments & schedule allow for it. Su-Metal & Moa have been their since day f*** one with no rotations, obviously!! So that gives you an idea of their commitment to the band here. They have been going non stop since January and only just finished their European tour a week ago. Kami is only one half of the coin here with all due respect!!! Without Su-Metal, Moa-Metal & now Momoko Metal, there would have been no Babymetal period end of story. _________________________________________________ In closing I think your real issue here however is that singers aren't musicians. You actually bring up an interesting conversation for debate here. The negative perception of singers as poor musicians. I think holds back so many artists from doing their best work. It keeps many of them from setting a high bar for themselves. For the attainment of musicianship skills that could help them collaborate and create more efficiently and with deeper understanding. Su-metal not only taught herself English in two years. She has writing credits now with Devine Attack and is taking more responsibility every day. She already has the musical background & training obviously. Not to mention being a gifted vocalist. I just think Amuze needs to allow Koba for them to spread their wings. Well we will have to agree to disagree I guess. Ladies have more then proven themselves at this point. 🤘🦊

C'mon Joel, let's do a bit of research mate! Your guest is knowledgeable & articulate, just not familiar with the J-rock industry and culture. You could have refuted the suggestion that Lovebites was an industry produced band, when in fact they're quite organic and were assembled by the foresight and talent scouting of Miho and Haruna. Ditto for Band-Maid, even if their early material was written for them. The genius of Miku put that concept together. Please take this as constructive criticism, we honestly won't mind a longer post song interview if you can enlighten your guests on some background of the bands you're showing them. I'm sure at least Kyle would appreciate it.

Their costumes are basically a fuck you to the guys that would say that to them. They are Lovebites and they play heavy Metal

This is the second time I know of that Joel let silly questions slide by without a word. The first was that goofy food critic a few months ago who couldn't hear the difference between guitar sounds and bass sounds. The guy who complained about backing tracks and backing musicians, things that have been used since the '60s. If he has read even 10% of the comments he should know that Lovebites are not a corporate horse meant to be ridden until dead.

NO Joel !!! You can't say "a little of both" to your guest's question about whether this is a "manufactured" band with production "composing" behind them!!!! The Lovebites compose, write the lyrics (Asami) and arrange ALL their songs themselves! There's also a co-composer (Mao) who wrote half the music with Miho (founding bassist who's been gone for 3 years...) and who now writes with Asami (singer)... the other musical part is done by Miyako (one of the guitarists / pianist) who composes ALONE! So... as long as you've been reacting to LB, you should know all about it! Please don't imply such things...

The "Nardcore" punk band Dr. Know in which Kyle played had over 30 members in its history. And he calls Lovebites manufactured. Now even the punks are intollerant and full of prejudice. Many Americans don't know anything about anything, but have strong opinions about everything. Kyle's level of knowledge about Japanese music: 1989. Always disappointing.🤨
