What I find interesting about the Metroid Prime 4 trailer is how much it was tailored specifically to Metroid Prime fans. They made virtually no attempt to make this game look appealing to people who don't already want it. When they show the scanning feature, most people aren't going to be interested - you can scan random stuff in the environment just to read text about stuff? Nobody cares about that. But Metroid Prime fans care about that, and they care a lot. The stinger at the end of the main segment of the trailer was Sylux dramatically emerging with two Metroid (or maybe Mochtroids?) - but nobody knows who Sylux is. He appeared decades ago in a spinoff game on the DS and then got teased in the after-credits scenes of two other games. His reveal as the villain is incomprehensible to most viewers. But Metroid Prime fans know him, and seeing him as the villain is a big payoff for them. I get the feeling that part of Nintendo's strategy with their IP these days is to rely on their fans to generate buzz around their games - Nintendo doesn't care if their Metroid Prime 4 trailer doesn't appeal to newcomers to the franchise, because they expect the fanbase to pump up that appeal via the hype factor.
@ariwl1
@ariwl1 3 ай бұрын
I have no training in marketing but I honestly have no clue how you market Metroid to newcomers. Sure shooting aliens is fun but it's only one part of what Metroid actually is and the greater part of it seems really hard to effectively convey to someone not already in the know. Metroid is a well-known and respected name in the industry, especially among game devs, but its sales are quite often way more modest than you'd expect from a name with that much gravitas. I think you're right that Nintendo often pulls for the hardcore fans to do a lot of the heavy lifting here.

How are you gonna market Metroid Prime 4 to fps fans, the game literally has a lock-on button. It's why I'm always baffled when people compare it to Halo.
@fathercashew
@fathercashew 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm in that group and the trailer was so reminiscent of the intro sequence of MP1 to me. Scanning an incapacitated Space Pirate was one of the first things you do on Frigate Orpheon - followed closely by going morph ball mode into a nearby tunnel. ;) Will it inspire me to hype up the game though? Nah, not really. I still expect it to be good, don't get me wrong, but getting a taste of the environments would be the thing to get me going. I want to get a sense of what planet we'll be clawing our way through this time.
@Renoistic
@Renoistic 3 ай бұрын
As someone who actively dislikes Metroid Prime that trailer was almost upsetting. 22 years and you have NO new ideas? I love almost every Metroid that doesn't have Prime in the name, and have nothing against 1st person games. I'm certain a good 1st person Metroid is a possibility, but this trailer told me they have no interest in anything but satisfying the existing fans. Really disappointing.

I still don't think Samus would have made it through even if she was a switch exclusive. The second Nintendo got a picture of her holding an AK47 they would have been like "Oh actually Samus uses a beam cannon :)" They would 100% seriously have the expectation that all weapons would be modeled for her.
@holyrory

As much as I'd love Samus to be a skin the thought of her somehow holding a regular gun with her arm cannon directly beneath it is lame. So I kinda would want her to have bespoke animations too tbh.

@Stormkyleis
@Stormkyleis 3 ай бұрын
Honestly not a coincidence, Mario & Luigi was great when it was allowed to take liberties with its characters and worlds. Luigi's dumb socks are just an example of AlphaDream doing something unique with the character's design. But then they started pushing this boring, standardized look. It's also when Paper Mario lost its way. It was Nintendo being _too_ protective with their IP to the point of having every game look roughly the same. Luckily, it looks like Mario RPGs are back to being unique. Brothership looks so good. (minus the lack of socks obviously)

Also illustrates why they're able to run such a well-respected company that hosts some of the greatest game-making talent in the industry. While the rest of the studios are overhiring during a pandemic and then mass firing when their hires or studio purchases aren't immediately making them all the billions of dollars anymore, Nintendo is out here building a long-term portfolio of amazing games and cultivating talent that will keep making those games for decades to come. There's a reason any game dev would jump at the opportunity to make games for Nintendo

What separates Nintendo from the competition, is the fact that they obviously see value in more than sale numbers. Or let's say they've realized that by keeping the quality high in every aspect of their established franchises, the numbers will eventually come. Many of these "B-team" or "handheld" games are being developed by contract developers, but, there are obviously Nintendo producers overseeing art direction, design and everything else, to make sure they keep the standards or styles that they're going for. At the same time, for example Xbox management doesn't even know what's being made in all their studios. I remember a GamesIndustry interview with Schafer and Urquhart in which they said Matt Booty specifically told them they don't care what game they're making, as long as they've got a steady output for GamePass. To Nintendo, games are not "content" to fill out a library.
@chuckbatmangaming
@chuckbatmangaming 3 ай бұрын
They see games as art, not content. Like they're still a company looking to make profit, but they understand the long-term value of making good art, which is increasingly a rarity as entertainment companies across the board shift towards producing as much "content" as possible

Nintendo is the master of curating and vaulting their IP. It is surprising how much it matters. Just look at the movie industry for years they stuck with a release window where a movie would play only in theaters and then you would have to wait about a year to be able to watch it at home. The home release was almost as anticipated as the theater release sometimes. Now movie studios are tripping over themselves to have their movies available to stream within weeks if not day and date with theaters. Now theater box office is tanking and the streaming services are still not profitable. Furiosa is an amazing movie but people don't care because the value of a movie playing in a theater has gone to zero. Nintendo knows how to keep the value of their games high and a lot of that has to do with gatekeeping the experience.
@ZeroShaneBob

You bring of an important point a lot of Nintendo critics tend to not consider, the importance of IP. I have seen the argument that if Breath of the Wild or Tears of the Kingdom were not built around the Zelda IP, they wouldn't be as popular or critically acclaimed. An important thing people seem to be ignoring is those games wouldn't have been made without a major IP attached to them. Zelda being the IP is what gave the confidence in Nintendo as a company to want to invest so much time and money into those game's development. Also, despite people saying this, the game's share tons and tons of similarities to older 3D Zelda games, right down to how combat works with its lock on systems.

I think people forget Nintendo are the company that repurposed a failed cabinet to make DK and had too many screens so they decided to make Punch Out. Not to mention them reusing battery from the 3ds to put inside pro controllers. They are uniquely creative because they foster talent and don’t just go out and try to buy their way out of a bad situation. If they can figure out their online infrastructure I don’t see how they can’t be the front runners of the next gen.

Yeah it’s something I take for granted from Nintendo. They cultivated their IP so well that I forget it took decades of work for them to make them as strong as they are. But I think that’s what they want: you expect the franchises to return and you expect quality every release. Nintendo usually delivers on both every time.

What? Sony has not destroyed any of their IP. They also have not gone out of their way to destroy any of them. What are you talking about? The problem is that they're not using them lmao. They could release a game from Socom, to Sly, to Parappa, to Infamous, to Killzone, to Singstar, etc. and every single one of them would be welcomed. Stop with the hyperbole and dramatics lmao. Also you can't be mad at Sony for focusing on the IP that brings them the most success when people are not buying the smaller games to the same degree. That's not how business works.

Here's the thing I love most about "10": Kyle is the same age (approximately) as a lot of us who have watched him through the years. His industry commentary is astute, interesting, funny, etc. ... and also somewhat cynical and even depressing at times. Looking back at how gaming and the industry has changed these past few decades will do that. But for a few seconds there, Kyle and all of us are sent back in a time machine 20+ years to that time in the early 2000s when we were all playing the sh*t out of MvC2, one of the best fighting games ever, one of the best Marvel games ever (when Marvel was still awesome, right before the MCU started mucking it up). The only desperate cynicism we had was about how Dreamcast was dying because SEGA had made too many mistakes. How we felt about the game and our time with it then? 10. No cynicism or depression. Just play play play, and have a blast. Look at Kyle's face when he says "10". He's in the time machine. MvC2 took us for a ride, alright...

Sure, letting your teams do new stuff is good, and has been successful. But they outright abandon them when they could let another team (internal or external) use it. Why was the decision to keep Samus out of Fortnite a smart decision now??
@Mermete8
@Mermete8 2 ай бұрын
Nintendo keeps it as an exclusive gaming character and if you want to play as her you must buy it on Nintendo only. A popular game like Fortnite might introduce her to new gamers but also would overuse and erode the character. It's not a good long term decision. Also it would be very out of place. Just imagine Samus with a non-scifi gun and a pickaxe, getting headshots from some wacky skinned nobody then teabagged. It's not like the case of Link in the Nintendo GameCube version of SoulCalibur II where he was only on the N console version, and sword fighting wasn't out of the ordinary for the character

Im glad you didn't go all gooey over Metroid prime 4.its gonna be a great game but it looks exactly the same as the original no clear innovation or progression that they show off.

But they were ready to have Samus in Fortnite IF she would only appear on the Nintendo's platform.

There's no such thing as b team. None of those games were even developed by Nintendo or a Nintendo studio outside of ndcube on Mario party lol

Do you have any idea how many people watched the end of the video just staying into your soul yelling "Don't you do it" to the screen.

Why is young Bill Gates wearing a golden shirt while talking about Nintendo? I'm confused.

Yeah I won’t be playing a single of of these games, hell I’ll buy a switch just for Metroid prime 2 and sell it like I did with dread.

Only Nintendo has a B team. Neither Sony or X-Box have B teams.These are the reasons why both Sony and Xbox lack games.

Sony's third-party support for PlayStation is immense, they don't need a B-team internally... however, they are publishing or partially-bankrolling an interesting selection of games from Asia (outside Japan) lately, which are interesting. Microsoft just closed Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin plus two other smaller studios. Microsoft execs have decided that they have no interest in maintaining a B team.

@@sonicmania9993 You need a B team to constantly pump 1st party games. Then they have no chance of winning against Nintendo. I could just make a PC for third party games. No reason to buy a PS5 with very little first party games. I bet you Switch 2 will have more first party than PS5 in its first 2 or 3 years.

@@emersonssbb Enjoy your PC for those third-party games: that is a fine option -- more expensive and more work-intensive, but a fine option. You can play all the third-party Switch games on PC as well. I enjoy my $500 plug-and-play PS5, which never needs tinkering or upgrading, looks and sounds great on the huge TV in the living room, and plays just about all of those third-party games. Sometimes I can play them a year or two before you will get to play them on PC. It's a nice console to have. Which is why they've sold like 60+ million PS5 consoles in 4 years (...not because of first-party games). $500 is cheap for such a convenient and reliable machine.

@@sonicmania9993 PS5 still has no first party. The Switch 2 is gonna have more first party then it by its 2nd or 3rd year. Or i could buy a xbox series x for 350 dollars for third party cheaper than your 500 dollars. Yet Sony laid 900 employees that 60m PS5 means nothing when you have 0% profits from first party games.
