Kyle i got a question i always wanted an answer, what kind of role weight takes in case of a crash. I mean the same car at the same crash speed but with a 200kg difference or/and different segment cars. I was arguing with a family member about this i said that even if a car is small/lightweight if it got a good safety equipment that will be the car to be in case of a crash and not a heavy SUV. Can you bring some light to the dark??
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Mar, depends on the crash, if you're crashing into another car you want to be heavier as then you will have more momentum than them and you will decelerate less (at the cost of them decelerating more/reversing their direction of travel). If it's just you crashing into a wall or tree, you would be better off with the car with better safety equipment.

Could be yeah. Still if the car is going against a wall of air at a 90 degree angle I would imagine that there could be a high pressure build up on one side of the car. Can't wrap my brain around that. Still this can all be a dumb idea on my side. Don't have the proper knowledge of aero like Kyle has.

I doubt that'd be an issue; sportscars have gone decades without fins, and they had no problems like that, to my knowledge. The benefit of the fin seems so marginal that I wonder if it'd even be on most prototypes if it wasn't mandatory. The only major stability problem prototypes have continuously suffered from is backflips, which are caused by the mandated flat(ish) undertray. However, this car has enormous ground effect tunnels, so I doubt it'd ever experience flips.

Thanks Kyle, great analysis and explainations. With the wheels being mostly covered, and the huge diffusers, will the downforce generated by the car be more consistent than a wings and open wheel F1 car? It doesn't appear to have the multiple winglets, tabs and slots that F1 cars have on their wing and barge board, what are the reasons such details aren't provided (or required)? And are there any estimates of the amounts of downforce this car will be able to generate? What sort of tyres will the Valkyrie run? Presumably something pretty special to be able to cope with the power, the speed, and presumably significant downforce.
@KompletterGeist
@KompletterGeist 6 жыл бұрын
Hello Kyle. Love the video, very illustrative. However, I disagree strongly at some points! Let me elaborate: At 12:21 you are speaking about a vortex that builds up underneath that outward footplate. Now from my experience as an aero engineer in formula student I can guarantee you that this is not the case whatsoever. The air will just flow underneath that plate and build up a vortex on the edge of the diffusor-fence. The purpose of that plate, if you run it low to the ground, is to create a kind of gap seal. When the air is flowing through the tight space between the plate and the street it loses energy which will result in a smaller vortex compared to a diffusor without such a footplate. Another point I disagree with is that you said at 12:00 there is a HP behind the tire and a LP in the diffusor. That is also not the case. Directly behind the tire there is a low pressure region and since we are at the exit of the diffusor, the pressure won't be that low at that point. The thing that is probably forming the big vortex you talk about is very likely going to be the rear tire jet that is being sucked underneath the diffusor I am also a bit iffy on the front wheel plate with the outwards slope. I'm pretty confident that if this plate creates suction in any form, all that is going to be sucked is the front tire jet. I don't think it will increase the frontwing performance Ofc I could be wrong and I'm not as educated on aero as you but we run such an outward footplate on our diffusor and the vortex never formed underneath that plate no matter the ground clearance or size of that plate
@KYLEENGINEERS
@KYLEENGINEERS 6 жыл бұрын
Hi there, the vortex at 12:21 is something I have seen in practice with some of my large tunnel/diffuser, high lateral expansion designs on touring car bodies, so I can assure you it exists in quite a few cases. I have also previously discussed this diffuser footplate vortex with my old PhD supervisor (ex F1), and he has confirmed its existence (in fact he was the one that first put me onto it!). Regarding the HP/LP, again on the same designs mentioned previously, with high rear lateral expansion there is about a 0.5Cp differential between the outside and inside of the diffuser as we move towards the rear of the diffuser where the lateral expansion is forcing against the tyre wake. At exactly the rearmost point of the rear tyre, they are about even in pressure (which does extend back a little), and at the front and mid of the tyre the pressure is higher outside the diffuser body. The fundamental point I was making was that not specifically at the point directly behind the rear tyre, but more along the majority of the diffuser the pressure is higher outside than in, hence the air will flow inwards. And regarding the plate increasing the front wing performance, again it is something that commonly improves performance in more closed body, touring cars, as the more air you can evacuate from the front the better. They have opened the front up a lot compared to the previous model, but there is little doubt that having a vane guiding the tyre wake out will provide a clearer air path for extraction out from the front wing and will consequently improve performance. Take a look at something like the LYFE motorsports GTR for example. Thanks for watching! Out of interest, which FS Team are you from?
@KompletterGeist
@KompletterGeist 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the answer! Well I suppose if you've seen such a vortex in practice then there is no doubt about its existence. Keep an eye on your inbox, I wanna write you a PM about that when I have time tomorrow :) Greetings from Germany

KYLE.ENGINEERS you should do a video talking about the aerodynamics of the Chaparral 2J
@rcnumbers3562
@rcnumbers3562 5 жыл бұрын
The 2J had a lot of downforce but it didnt achieve this by using wings but because of a snowmobile engine in the back. That 2nd engine was sucking all the air underneath the car creating a lot of downforce and massive ground effect. Unlike wings this car's downforce was permanent. You know those GPS and Phone holders that you put on your car's windscreen? The vaccuum makes it so it sticks really well to the windshield. Ground effect also did the same thing. By removing the air underneath the car it created almost full vaccuum causing it to stick to the road really well.

The first model of the car was purely concept. I wasn't convinced at first there was any space for the engine and couldn't see any intakes anywhere. But it's evolving. Hopefully when it's done it will have a stellar paint job. I wonder how Adrian and Aston Martin are planning to keep the weight down with a hybrid powertrain.... time will tell. I wonder why no one has tried Fan assisted downforce till date. Will that lateral expansion in the diffuser is going to act like a rudder and keep the car very stable?

There're homologation requirements that might cause this to go up. Racing designers always start with something inspired from the track, but when they have to bring it to the road, I've never seen a single instance where they actually managed to maintain their ambitious weight target. Still, the difference will not be much. But in terms of aero, this car is a whole other level of crazy. All other hypercars (and even the megacars) won't be able to touch it if they can pull it off.

Why isn't the throat of the diffuser tunnels closer to the ground on this car? Wouldn't we be able to extract more downforce by running it closer to the ground, thereby making better use of the ground effect? I have seen several diffusers especially in Formula SAE having no more than 3-4 inches of ground clearance and they seem to work quite efficiently. What are your thoughts on this

I was wondering, how does the rear radiator gets a clean air if there's huge amount of air extracted from the front wheel and front part of the underbody, almost in front of it ? If I look at it with my basic knowledge, I would assume that air from that big gap at 6:21 would push any clean air that goes around the side of the car outwards and therefore there would't be any high pressure air left for the side radiator. I would love to know how the air around that side of the car really works.

Gjaeralaus it’s not clear if this is true, but there’s been a bit of speculation that F1 cars have been doing this for a bit. If you noticed, the actual idea behind this project for Aston is to create low aerodynamic drag. So they didn't want to sacrifice drag in terms of downforce, thus actual downforce will be very low on the car if compared with a race car, but normal maybe higher than average for a road car. This car has no ground effect whatsoever, just Bernoulli's equation low pressure region and basic idea of less stuff getting in the way.

Rimac is going to provide an ERS battery System (yeah, the same guys who built the Concept one and the Koenigsegg Regera's battery system). While the Mercedes engine needs a rebuild ever so often, the AM's will last forever. The Aero on this is in a whole other category of insane. It will destroy every other car on a track.

To be an automotive designer it takes getting a BS. Yet I designed this car in high school and here it is today as the next big thing... Life is crazy.

Maybe yeah. But for example zirotech for heat protection is VERY VERY expensive (even if they use foils for protection is pain in ass for carbon fibre resin). From economic standpoint, maintenance and engine tuning maybe is better to get basics right first. Furthermore if we look pragmatically. If they put turbo engine in that car in future, all exhaust energy gets lowered so effect is even lower. And final nail in coffin for EBD. All that development of aero tools for PROPER gas exhaust testing and CFD , wind tunnels (lasers, smoke, optics) takes long time, is VERY HARD and EXPENSIVE. Even F1 teams failed flat in that area, not to mention boutique Aston Martin and its limited R&D money.

Based on the direction Aston has been going, that seems like a good thing. Sure, chop down the spoiler and then be forced to make the new awkward looking rear aerodynamically behave like the spoiler is still there. It’s like there’s something wrong with their brains.
