My husband was been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and it is highly difficult and exhausting for him to go into town as it took half a day as we live waaaay out in the country…I found your book and applied it to our new life style…we go to town so much less often. I shop in our own pantry and closet! and I go into town (an hour drive) once a month or less. Thank you for this book that has made this wife’s caretaker’s life so much calmer and less stressful…and saving money is the frosting on this wet cake!! God bless you!

I’m a visual person so I also use the colored stickers - each color is a specific year and I write the month on each sticker (using the date on the product). This shows me at a glance if something is nearing its best by date so it can be used quickly.

Seasoned prepper ... a bit of advice I have is to incorporate tidying your food storage area(s) into your weekly cleaning routine. It's easy to neglect this because it's all usually tucked away somewhere. My storage is in the "master bedroom" of my double wide, and it naturally becomes a dumping ground for the "I'll deal with it later" items. Unfortunately, "later" is usually a lot later than you think, and by then there are several dumped items. 😬😬😬

I keep an inventory chart on a clip board. Once a month, before going to the store, I check it and compare whats on sale. Most times, I will purchase a few more items I'm low on that are on sale. That has helped me build my backstock as well. I also buy clearance items, especially veggies, and immediately dehydrate them. I'm learning to garden, starting with small, easy stuff like radishes and lettuce and a few herbs so I won't have to rely on clearance items forever.

TIP: You just have to start. Whatever you can do is better than not doing it. When a challenge shows up, you learn to resolve it and you go to the next level. The habit of someone else being responsible for the food we want and like is a recent concept. My grandparents had huge pantrys and cellar. Kylene, I want to know how much chocolate you consider to be a year supply?!? I have 25 lbs but I'm not sure that's enough.
@TheProvidentPrepper
@TheProvidentPrepper Ай бұрын
LOL! A year supply of chocolate ... hmmm. Am I sharing or keeping it all for me? Keep track of how much you eat in a month. That's a great way to do it. If in doubt, buy more. You may be very popular. When life get's stressful I self medicate with chocolate. So I'd also have to factor in the stress level to get a true estimate. Right now I'm being really good and haven't had chocolate (or any sugar) in 6 weeks. If I'm living under great stress and self-medicating, I may need a giant red Symphony bar a day. That's 365 times 7.37 ounces ... let's say 8 ounces. That would be 182 pounds. So somewhere between no chocolate and 182 pounds. LOL! I definitely don't have that much in storage.

Regarding canned foods, over these last 3 years I have found that I now have the sense (slow learner here) to stock up on what family members like to eat. Things like Mary's Kitchen corned beef hash. Bush's beans. Corn (my addiction) Canned prepared pie fillings, so good for a sweet treat. Rosarita refried beans. ...yes we easily make them from scratch, but stock up the ready-to-eat just in case. Being visually impaired, I struggle ONCE to read the Best Buy date, then write it really big on the can with a Sharpie pen before putting it on the shelf. We eat past the best buy date, knowing from experience that the food is still good long after. Besides, the chickens are always waiting for discards. It was nice to watch your video and feel propped up, as we are of one mind.

My two cents would be to do a little bit of everything…then double what you just did….then triple it…etc. In other words, start small…but don’t stay small. Example: buy a week or two of everything you eat and do this over a two to four week timespan (depending on your budget). Then, merely do it again….and again. As you’re buying the regular things, begin to change it up. An example of that would be if you buy 3 pounds of hamburger every couple of weeks, buy a few cans of ground beef to store. If you buy a couple pounds of fresh carrots every couple of weeks, also buy 6 cans of carrots to store. Keep the momentum going. Don’t stop. Don’t take a break. Don’t burden yourself or your budget, but don’t stop. ♥️

You always hear prepping experts say "Start by filling out your pantry, get the short-term food storage first and then the long-term stuff after". I did it the way Karen advised - long-term first. I already had a week or two of canned goods and cereals and such around, so I began with the buckets of rice and beans and oatmeal and pasta. During the pandemic at that, when so many foods were in short supply or could hardly be found at all. ( Thanks to your channel, for teaching me how to do all that stuff with the mylar bags and oxygen absorbers and so on. )

Great work! We agree with so many of your concepts. This is the hub of "Intentional Living". The prepper pantry affords us the opportunity to wait for the deals and buy what we want when we want to. It offers convenience of not having to run to the store every minute because we run out of something. It also affords us the luxury of having choices and getting what we want vs settling for off brand.

Buy leader items, the things that are on sale at the best price. Buy more ingredient items, fewer ultra processed food. Today was senior day at the store in our town. 10% off. Everything I purchased was on sale. Peanut butter, ground beef, chicken, pasta, rice, , some canned goods, produce, cheese, meat, cleaning and personal items.

Years ago.....I was one who started out with the basics. Then felt prompted to use it not just store it, so I started to experiment with our wheat supply, hunt up recipes, ask others what/if they did. Pretty soon we were eating much better and for less, which spurred me on to use other basic ingredients. Now we have more than just the basics, but those basics are still integrated into our daily meals. I actually think people are missing out if they do not have the basic food storage items to build upon!! Huge plus: our health improved.

I think it can be a combination of things. Food not completely dry, too much moisture in the air, moisture hands handling food etc.
@AYearWithoutTheGroceryStore
@AYearWithoutTheGroceryStore Ай бұрын
It can. Think of a glass of ice water. The outside of the cup starts dry but because of the differential between the temperature on the outside of the cup and the inside of the cup, it creates condensation. The same thing can happen if you're not storing your food at a consistent temperature. If you were storing your food in your garage, this can happen with your food storage as well.

That's a pretty interesting book. And yes while you could look at it and simply say that only having food is important, I do think it's going to be important from a psychological perspective that you can make things palatable. With as stressful as everything else will be, I would love to at least have some "Normal" things like a great tasting home cooked meal to look forward to at the end of every day. And yes, a year's worth of food is entirely possible. I have personally achieved this. Obviously it's going to require effort, space, and money for more people, but it is doable.

Did you see their video the other day? Kylene said make a list of meals. She laughed about Jonathon wanting a spreadsheet. Well, after watching that video I didn’t make a spreadsheet, but I did make a chart. Columns for protein, starch, fruit/vegetable, other. First line was Keystone Shredded Beef, rigatoni, tomatoes (sauce), with pasta sauce in the “other” column. Then a row with Keystone Shredded Beef, instant mashed potatoes, carrots/mushrooms. Next section had Keystone Ground Beef, rice, corn/peppers/onions, and salsa. I went from there, alternating beef, chicken, pork, turkey, ham, salmon, trout and tuna. I did three for each protein, alternating between pasta (including types of pasta), rice, quinoa, barley, etc. It was actually a fun exercise.

How long will my home-canned food really last? I am a mom of 4 & a grandmother of 9. I have been canning for about 3 years (started at age 66). Problem: I am canning enough food for 22 people just in case they all show up at our house (only my husband & I at home now). I have so much canned food now that I probably need to just stop canning, but I don’t want to stop!
@dberger1010
@dberger1010 12 күн бұрын
Don't stop. I'm the same age as you and doing it for the same reasons (even started when you did) . Your canned food will last a VERY long time as long as the seal is not broken. It will lose slight amounts of nutritional value over time but in a pinch (or a famine or depression) will still provide for your needs. I canned a BUNCH of chili, beef stroganoff and soups. Those don't last long on my shelves because it's our fast food😂 when I don't feel like cooking.

@@Bob-lq9ysI am a single senior and my issue with rotation isn’t primarily about budget. It has more to do with buying or storing in bulk. Neither is practical for a single person household unless you want to eat the same thing over and over. But your comments for those on a tight budget are very helpful.

I am a single senior and here is what I do. I made a couple of lists, one each for protein, rice and grains, legumes, fruit, vegetables, and a few other items. Then I thought about how many times a week I would eat each. For example if I only eat pasta once a week, with a serving size of 2 ounces, I only need about half a dozen boxes of pasta for a year. I have several different types of pasta stored in mason jars with oxygen absorbers. The only item I bought in large quantity was rice. Even beans didn’t make sense for me to buy in bulk because in addition to black, red, navy, great northern and pinto beans, I also have other legumes like brown lentils, red lentils, split peas, and black eyes peas. If you had that much variety a one pound bag of each would provide legumes more than twice a week for a year. I am not saying you need that much variety, I am just saying there is a way to do it, but it won’t be by purchasing large quantities for most items. So don’t go out and buy a 20 lb bag of anything. At least not yet. Make a list first.

@@danamarie8718 There is only 2 of us, so buying big bulk isn't really good either, we do stock several cans of what we will eat and a few bags of rice and ect. no we don't have but a month or 2 on hand

If you’re brand new to food storage, I recommend buying long-term products from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This way you don’t have to buy buckets and Mylar bags, everything is securely sealed and the cost is comparable if not better. I buy the wheat I mill weekly from Azure Standard and store it in 5 gallon buckets, all the while accruing interest on my # 10 cans.

I got an 18" high bed frame you can put LOTS of grocery boxes under there but be sure to Sort and Mark the boxes and Map where each box is. My Buckets came free (in the day) from a grocery bakery. I'm not sure they are free now, but if they do charge, you can get several buckets with lids at the bakery for the price of one Home Depot bucket. ❤

Being a prepper thas just starting out. How do you know what is long term vs short term storage fds? Like how long certain fds will last when stored properly? Such as canned fds vs frozen fds. & How do you know what can be frozen & what can't? Is there a book somewhere? Lol & thank you for your videos, they have helped tremendously. Luv from Idaho

Question - What size of the desiccant pack is needed? Does anyone have a good chart concerning this? I have 2-gram desiccant packets and am wondering now if I bought the wrong size.

There are rolling fifo racks. If you put your bed up on 6" risers, you should be able to put the shorter racks under there.

A freeze dryer would be very helpful as you should avoid the standard long term storage items like white rice, pasta, and wheat. You can purchase freeze dried meats, veggies, cheeses, etc. Store the foods that you eat right now. It is challenging but absolutely doable.

Canned meat& vegetables are a good start. I pressure can my own chicken, hamburger and roast beef. Buy extra meat on sale and can that or buy ready canned from the store.

My husband is Type 2 and I cook all of our meals from scratch. I dehydrate veggies like kale and brussel sprouts and keep them in air tight containers. I also look online for diabetic dessert recipes and keep those ingredients on hand as much as possible. If you have a dietitian for help, ask them about sourdough rye bread. I am learning to garden to have a better supply of fresh vegetables and also learning to can those eventually. Store the foods that work best for managing your diet, such as less corn and potatoes and more green beans and carrots. I use a high protein, high fiber, low sugar, low carb menu for my husband. I don't have a backstock of pasta, that's unhealthy for him. But I do have a backstock of dehydrated spriralized zucchini. It won't last as long, but it's there . Whole spaghetti squash will last month if it's kept in a cool dark place, like a closet. That is a great alternative to pasta.
