Had one of these as a kid in Australia, bought from a hobby shop in Box Hill South (Melbourne) in 1986 and raced it at the track at Templestowe. It used to go through mechanical speed controllers every month when the wire coil melted, my pocket money couldn’t keep up with getting new ones so I became pretty handy with the soldering iron trying to fix it! Gave up and put a Tamiya mechanical speed controller on it in the end which solved the problem. Also had fun swapping out the pinion gear on the motor for higher top speed, I think I had 17,18 and 19t options. What else…it used to chew driveshafts, don’t think I ever solved that problem within my limited budget. I stuck with the 360ST motor throughout, but sometimes would get put in modified race classes because of it rather than the stock class having RS540s(? - memory fade). The 360ST was no match for the good motors hanging off the back of some RC10s and I used to get lapped a bit! Great to see a video on the Icarus, brought back some good memories! I had a look at the prices of the NOS kits on eBay and they are up there $$, would probably have grabbed another if cheaper but if building a vintage car now I’d do a RC10 for myself because that was my dream RC way back when.

Awesome memories 😊 Thanks for sharing. I picked this up after I found a NIB. I couldn’t bring myself to open the NIB! It’s actually not too bad to run.

@@RCACTIONAUSTRALIA for an entry level car they were quite a good thing back in the day, certainly a step up from the Tamiya Hornet and Grasshopper that were the main competitors. After the Icarus it was quite a jump to the next level of cars.

Great memories 😎 Well it’s definitely held up nicely as it’s seen some use and it’s still perfectly working. Definitely a nice RC 36years on.

I was given an Icarus by a friend back in high school in the 80's. He gave it to me to use as a parts donor to my Kyosho Pegasus. We bought both those cars new back in the mid 80's and beat them to death. A few years ago, I stripped them both down and mechanically restored them. Cosmetically, they still carry the battle scars from years ago. After I fixed them to operating condition, my father-in-law gave me his old RC cars: A Kyosho Icarus and a Tamiya Frog. I went through both of them and got them back into operating condition. I generally don't run them and have them displayed. These cars like to flip and go into a cartwheel. When they do that, they like to snap off their rear axle, then you are in a mess trying to find a replacement. I have broken a ton of them over the years. The Pagasus didn't come with bearings and the bushings eat grooves into the axles. I have resorted to filling the grooves with JB Weld and sanding them down to the original diameter to keep these car going. These cars have tons of fun memories attached to them!!

very cool time warp buggy, i recall racing here in perth mid 80,s with my hornet with frogs/hotshot/optima ect ect and a guy showed up at club with one and we all shit our self as our club rules motors were 480 gold or tamiya techni tune max limit ,and this guy had a 360 !!!! , it did run nice on our grass track at perth radio rally club , good times with nicad battery and 4min run times was the key too make a fast car VS 4 min race times

Greetings! I was just given one of these from a friend for whom I had done some work and since it belonged to her partner who has now died she did not have the answers to any of my questions about it. The first thing I notiched is that all four tires feel "squeezable" or "pliable" as if there is no air in the them. Is this the way they are supposed to be or should they be firm, as if air filled? Thanks!

Think it might look better if you paint the rollcage in a sort of dark metallic black or titanium grey, chrome too sort of go with the wheels. What rc bodies would fit onto this besides the cosmo & such that use the same chassis ? Maybe either the futaba fx10 buggy & mad cap body behind you in the video, worth checking perhaps just too find alternatives. The Cox Ultrastock has a more car like body rather then a buggy one. It's basically a Toyota Celica Supra with some liberty used on the design too fit the dimensions of the chassis. There is also the Cox Bandido which is the same chassis as this buggy, just different body, wheels & maybe different front suspension setup of the newer or older version of the chassis.
@RCACTIONAUSTRALIA

It’s definitely an interesting RC. The chassis was also shared with the Kyosho Pegasus
